Loved sitting in on such a smart conversation between two wonderful, yet very different, Florida gardeners! This was so informative, and whether you are going native or not, this is chock full of good ideas to consider in planning a garden, or doing a refresh. Congratulations, Jacqueline, on adding Native planting consulting to your offerings, and this video is a great example of how good you are at this! Love seeing what you see or look for when assessing Petrina's yard, and even incorporating her camera-shy husband's preferences. Petrina's clear statements of her objectives, intelligent questions about the possibilities, taking in new information, and flexing or reevaluating her options was a lesson in how to enjoy, learn, and get the most out of a consult. (I bet it will reduce the intimidation factor of an "Official Wild Floridian" consultation for some fans) Thank you, ladies!

How exciting, my two favorite ladies together again. Seriously, thanks to you two I am now a successful Florida gardener. Just this year I transformed my small front garden into a native garden. Things are still sprouting but I can see what they will become. Love the idea about putting the flowers in near the vegetable garden for pollinating. That will be my next project. Thanks again for all your tips & tricks. Always so much information. Love you both.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I agree. I started watching both of you to learn to grow vegetables, which I'm doing great with now. After hearing her go on about natives I decided to look into it & now have one started in my front yard. Thanks to you both.

Perfect timing!! I am going out today to get some natives to plant some pollinator pots. Got some added inspiration from Florida Native Plant Society & Florida Wildflower Society videos. With the timing of this video, I think it's a sign. Thanks for the videos, which always serve as inspiration.

I can totally understand. All the ones I have done have been because people reached out to me privately and requested it. I was worried I would not have time to do all the requests if I let it be widely known. But I have a system now, so I figured the more the merrier 🥰 Everyone who has done one has loved it. So when your ready, I’m sure you’ll like it.

I did this at my house. Got chip drop and then started adding stuff to it and let it go. Just keep adding. Mine is still pretty sparse because it’s such a large area under my fruit trees. But I’d say about 50% done. Depends on the paycheck. I love that you are doing this. Advice for different lawns.

@@WildFloridian thank you! I bought some seeds for wild bergamot, false sunflowers, and all 3 types of native Milkweed, so hopefully they all germinate! 🤞 they're in the fridge right now pretending it's winter hahaha. I've got 10 Common milkweed plants already, and some other native plants scattered around, but I want more! Lol also I love that we live so far apart, but black eyed Susans are native for both of us! You can fill in among the flowers with growing ginger. Ginger is very tropical looking and editable at the end of the season. I grew some in grow bags along th edge of my patio. They gave my patio a very tropical look. They have pink and white flowers among the leaves and they bring in the pollinators.

Me too! :) Inspired by you and now seeking out nurseries that sell native plants in my area. I have gained such appreciation to see the true beauty in native plants. I have so changed from when I would just buy the showiest thing at the big box store, yes sometimes these are not as showy or have more discreet beauty. AND the bees and butterflies! Omg, multiplied x a bunch. Trying electroculture, cuz meh, why not. Wonder what you may think of that concept? Thank you!

It will seem odd, copper squiggles you put in the pots, but I tell you, I kinda think it's doing something? 9b here and we should be wayyy past growing full size tomatoes, but still producing! Plus, I like copper anyways lol :)

I have the tea bush. In my yard, which is a very old yard on a lake, it doesn’t grow very large. But because of where they are, I also keep it trimmed back. And, yes, it’s a small bee magnet. The larger bees don’t really use it.
@WildFloridian Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Katie! That makes sense that the bigger bees aren’t as excited. The flowers looked small to me.

You could also put in some kind of a water feature like with rocks around it and then your pollinators and everybody would have something to drink
@xxpowwowbluexx Жыл бұрын
If you don’t have so-called “pests,” then you won’t have any predators to eat them. But don’t worry; if you plant a bunch of native species, you’ll be building a good ecosystem with both.

I can see they like linear nice neat areas. We all start out like that… lol.
When you start a native garden area, do you have to have bare soil? If I were to clear a narrow space, say 6 inches, will it eventually kill grass as it grows? Or will the grass grow through it? I'm asking because I'm living in what was a cow pasture. So thick grass. Takes a whole lot of work to clear it.
@WildFloridian Жыл бұрын
Every time I’ve done a native garden, I’ve killed the grass with hit mulch and then plant into it. Depends on the type of native plant on whether it will be able to out compete. You could also do a control burn since you are in a rural area. I would get professional help. There is a good KZbinr in Alabama who discusses control burns a lot and would be a good resource for understanding on how fire can be used in converting your land to native plants
