NEWBIE FAQS:
For beginner uke players, I recommend a concert (if you are a smaller person) or tenor (for bigger/taller people or former guitar players). Sopranos are often cheaper but can be more difficult to learn on since they're smaller.
BUDGET STARTER UKES under $100
Kohala concert: amzn.to/1CUXrk2 (if you spend less than this, the uke might sound like a toy)
Kohala tenor: amzn.to/1NsFvqa
Makai concert: amzn.to/1NsFOBx
Makai tenor: amzn.to/1KHRmQS
NICE STARTER UKES $100- $160
Makai tenor: amzn.to/1L5tCEY
Islander concert: amzn.to/1NsFIKa
Islander tenor: amzn.to/1L5tvZX
TUNER: Everyone should have a clip-on tuner - they work by vibration so they're more accurate than phone apps.
I like this one: Snark SN-2 amzn.to/1ST157e
DAILY UKULELE: If you're looking for a book of songs, the Daily Ukulele is a great resource for classic and traditional songs, including Beatles and jazz standards. Daily Ukulele amzn.to/1U2eg4l

Thank you so much for the great lesson. We lost our son three years ago and I have sworn to play his uke to honor him and find out why he loved it so much. I have been practicing chords for a while and this is the first lesson that I could play and sing along with. What a feeling! Coincidentally, this song inspires hope and it goes a long way towards the healing process. Thanks again Cynthia, Keep up the great work!

Im feeling so happy! Thanks so much Cynthia - Im 55 years old and just unpacked my first brand new Ukulele 2 hours ago.I cannot play any instrument at all so thought I would give it a go as part of my life bucket list. I cannot believe it but have managed to do the first four lessons! Even the strumming! Wow, your lessons are easy and clear and Im now going through the lessons again without looking at the chord charts downloaded from your links. I bought the ukulele to learn to play as a form of therapy for my hands which are arthritic and they are loosening up really well!

Thank you for demonstrating the pace needed for teaching. I’ve been playing guitar for 50 years and ukulele for 3. It’s easy to forget how each element has to be learned. The hazard is dumping too much on a beginner too quickly. This was great.

Thank you, Cynthia Lin! I believe you are my first teacher! Nice and slow, clear and can't wait to get started. My Uke comes tomorrow, so I hope I can master the chords. You have taught me a lot already, and I don't play any musical instruments. (Yet) But I love to sing , don't need an audience, just want to learn. I am 65 and happy to be alive. Music has always been in my blood, but singing was all I ever mastered. God bless.

I think Cynthia is a great teacher with a lovely voice, and I am so appreciative of her time. The hard part is the changing of chords. While not wishing to take on the role of teacher (I'm a novice), I found this helped me after I watched all of Cynthia's video: Keep practicing all the chords of the songs as follows: C C F C C C F C C G C F C G F C But only strum once per chord and abandon the song. Practice this over and over, from slow to normal. When you've mastered it, then play along with Cynthia's song.

I am in my 60s and trying to learn an instrument to keep my brain working. I didn't expect learning the ukulele to be so enjoyable so soon but your wonderful teaching style, lovely voice and smile meant that I kept watching, and trying to get the chords right and I have just finished lesson 1 feeling happy despite knowing I can't play properly yet (learning something as an adult I'm way more self-critical than I was as a child, so feeling happy is major progress!) At 24.51- quick Intro to backbeat strum. This is one of my favorite Beginning uke tutorials. Thank you for doing it. I usually start watching once you teach the song and now that I'm a week into having a uke, I am rewatching often for the backbeat strum at end. Hope you do more strumming tutorials with a layout like... 1) intro to strum 2) practice with strum 3) intro to a song using strum 4) mix of chords (just basic with simple transitions) and strum practice at different parts of the song (slow then medium pace) 5) whole song practice with chords and strum (slow then medium pace)

I am beginner at age 55 this is perfect. I am actually taking lessons (learning tabs) which is great, but actually learning the cords with your lessons and playing keeps me interested. It is sure a frustrating process and the G7 and G cords are about to kill me, but I have successfully learned the C and F and can interchange them now so I know it will just take time. Not looking forward to D and Em though (lol). Your lessons inspire me to practice everyday. Thank you

This cord progression is waaaaay to fast for me. I was just about getting the first two, then the G is about impossible to get right that fast for me. I'm still counting, like okay two frets on this string for this finger, and she's already on the next cord. Moving on. Good luck to you!

I agree , definitely best teacher on KZbin. There are so many people posting tutorials on all sorts of things who have no teaching skills just a whole lot of ego. Cynthia looks lovely, sounds lovely but also has wonderful natural teaching skills. Simple clear repeated instructions, never over complicated or over simplified. Thank you Cynthia for posting your perfect tutorials and helping me learn to play my little ukulele.

Just got my first ukulele for Christmas and finally picked it up. While scouring the internet for beginners lessons I was struggling until I found you. Thank you for making a true "beginners" lesson. I have never taken a music class or played an instrument and you made this first lesson fun and exciting instead of frustrating and confusing. I can't wait to advance to your other lessons!

Thank you so much! This video is soooo awesome. I just bought a uke this week and you just taught me my first song! A lot of other uke tutorial videos are like "here it is! ok... go!!!" and I'm like "wait, what's happening???" so it was much easier to follow along with you. I still paused it a lot and replayed sections of the video to get everything down, but I really appreciated that you took things slowly so I actually could do that. Thank you again! I'm so excited to practice more and start working on your other videos.... but first I must rest. My fingers are very sore. :)

Hi Cynthia. thank you so much for your excellent Tutorial. as a Tutor myself on the You-tube. (Watercolours) I must congratulate you on the way you have managed to over come this problem of distance teaching. By your slow detailed & repetitive presentation Which tells me that you are Natural born teacher. & as such I will be following your tutorials ONLY While building up my left hand strength and finger muscle memory. Not a lot you or anyone else can do about my vocals. But being an Old Ancient I can laugh it up & call it soul. Just to make you Smile having decided to make this Ukulele playing a new project in this coming New year. Visited numerous other sites ( Show boaters) before discovering you my dear. Only to find I had tuned my strings the wrong way round. a e c g Ha! Ha! ha!. Thanks to you Cynthia it sounds better already. Smiles.

i know I'm making incredible process on my own as i can strum with muscle memory now and i use to struggle so hard on using my thumb and now i can strum with my pointer and my fingers aren't getting stuck in any of the chords its also starting not to get so choppy thank you so much this is extremely helpful and this is the first instrument that i actually learn on my own and willingly instead of being bummed that i even have to take it out and play it thank you so much :) I've only had my uke for 3 days so I've been practicing every day since for about an hour or more first day more working on tuning and starting to get the feel of it and second day learning how to strum and today learning how to strum and starting to learn music the only thing I'm having trouble on now is transferring to the next note. on another note (BA DA CHHH) I actually own the Twentyonepilots tour uke (i got it when i saw them saturday one of the best days of my life and would go back and do anything to do so) so i was wondering if you found maybe do 'We don't believe whats on TV' or 'Fall away' ? update: im so proud of myself for actually transitioning well for the first time in this song

LOVE this teacher! Slow and meticulous. Ive always loved music and would love to learn how to play . I bought UKE and have been on different sites trying them out. Got frustrated and started searching again and found you. WOW what a difference. the others were good for beginners but not the beginners that never touch a ukulele. I have arthritis in my fingers both hands. My fingers are short too and so I'm having a time trying to keep them off the others strings that aren't in a chord. Thank You Cynthia!!
