I personally really appreciate that this is something new for Spider-Man and they’re taking every swing they can. They aren’t playing anything safe I really liked that about it. We don’t always need to hit the same story beats. We all know Spideys origin. Let’s treat some new ground. This show is the perfect place to do that. It’s a smaller side project type thing that you can try stuff like this on. Obviously in the bigger movies and other things you do need to hit those familiar beats, but I like that they’re going for something different here. It’s the perfect place to do it

So it's essentially the modern version of the MTV 3d series from the early 2000s that was trying to bridge the gap between Sam Reimi flims 1 and 2, but it also wasn't the Tobey McGuire version exactly at the same time. Fascinating

Now origianlly when this was announced, it was said it was going to be in the MCU, and serve as the origin story for Tom Holland's Spider-Man, but as it developed, they realized they'd have more creative freedom if it were set in its own universe so they wouldn't need to constantly worry about MCU continuity, especially becasue writers and directors for the MCU are frequently changing. I think setting it in its own universe was a great decision. This is a Spider-Man cartoon that has a fresh new voice and style. The aniamtion is unlike any other Spider-Man cartoon, looking like a 60s pop art comic, with the style also being reminscent of Ang Lee's Hulk movie and the Spider-Verse films. The plot does serve some parallels to Spidey's intro in Captain America Civil War, but it also chnages it up very differently, similar to the What IF series, where some things happened beat for beat as they did in the MCU, but there were also events that played differently, whether slightly or drastically. I'm enjoying how so far there's not some big overarching threat. As the title of the show implies, this is Peter being a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and the threats in this show are relatively smaller scale such as robbers and arsonists, and it sort of plays out like those sidequests from the Playstation Spider-Man games. So far I'm really enjoying the uniqueness and creativity of this show. If you're a Marvel and Spider-Man fan, it's a refreshing change from what we usually get.

Well even though it's NO Spectacular Spider-Man but with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is good for what it is from the first episodes to Peter Parker going through High School and the difference is the spider that gave him his powers came from another dementition where Doctor Strange came out of the animation and art style looks cool and retro of a retro comic book style

For me there are too many different versions of popular Marvel & Dc characters to the point where it's not as special anymore. It's one of the main reasons why nowadays I resonate more with manga characters.

Having Peter be Spider-Man AFTER Uncle Ben’s death takes away a MAJOR part of his character development. Because without his death Peter would have been a selfish person who only cared for personal gain. Peter Parker is not Clark Kent.

I think their will be plenty of regrets that until that cannon point. We already see his good will and honesty hell he is literally messing up his life already trying to save people. So uncle Ben taught him well. All he needs is a great setback that he blames himself for. Well we have a bunch of potential heroes and villains around him that fit the bill.

My biggest problem with this show is how much they changed the origin of spider-man by putting the death of Uncle Ben before the spider bite. That is such a fundamental character moment for Peter because of his failure to act when he had the power to do so. This version of the character just skipped all that character growth and he's just a "good person" who stands up for the little guy right from the start with no apparent character flaws when we all know as spider-man fan's that is not how he starts out as he is very selfish, motivated by personal gain, ego driven, person with serious anger issues and a guilt complex at the start of his superhero carrier.

To me this felt like them trying to do a greatest hits for Spider-Man, but in all of their attempts to honor past Spider-Man it was distracting. Peter Parker sounds similar to Tom Holland, but it’s just off enough that it’s distracting. Aunt May sounds kind of like Marisa Tomei, but off enough where it becomes distracting. Even having them recreate Peter’s entrance in Civil War was distracting and pulled me out of the scene. Likewise, when you’re doing a Spider-Man animated project that has comic booky animation…my mind goes to the Spiderverse movies. I hope the rest of the season is able to make it stand on its own from not having to rely on Holland’s Spider-Man.

i got ya-- for me though that's what I found so fascinating. The world is so different, and the side characters aren't reminiscent of ones I've seen before so it gets points for its originality, but at the same time its centered and that's what makes it feel familiar. i can maybe see why some might be distracted but that was the fun of it for me. i hope we get more of both something new and interesting as well as familiarize and reference the MCU. that's a huge plus for me

C'mon Sean, you can have new Spiderman stories. Norman being Peter's Tony is something they wouldn't do in the main MCU bc the villain is the mentor. Uncle Ben dying is probably Peter's absolute point in every universe

I personally loved the show. This is so far the best depiction of Spider-Man that Marvel Studios has made. He looks and feels like Spider-Man more so than the films do. I will certainly be watching this one.

The problem with the MCU isn’t that we don’t see uncle Ben dying. It’s that he’s never really even mentioned or acknowledged which makes it feel like he’s not left an impact on Peter. That’s what this show and improvement from that respect.

He died before Peter gets his powers. So in this animated universe and in the main MCU, he never gave the "with great power" line to Peter. He gave that line to Peter because Peter is being neglectful after getting his powers. So if he died before* Peter gets his powers, he never gave the line. It's gonna fall to May again

I think it being set in the main timeline makes it so much worse. We don’t want that Spider-Man. One who’s given everything by Tony. And let’s not assume that Norman is going to fill the Tony ark from the main timeline.

Sure. We already have the movie of him being given everything. But the whole point is that it was pre-Tony Stark. Him in a home made costume fighting local crime not knowing what he's doing. That was the pitch. Now it's a Spider-Man What If Peter was mentored by Norman.

I personally adored it, I’m not the hugest fan of the animation. It looks pretty stiff and emotionless to me but I respect what they were trying to do with it. You can tell that this show has reverence for the character of Spider-Man in every scene. Down to that burglar scene. IMO the worst part is that you can tell it was initially an mcu tie in. I personally can’t wait to see where it goes even though the animation doesn’t 100% work.

I completely disagree regarding the universe-connections. I feel like we've gotten Holland's story already, I don't know what setting it before Homecoming really adds to the story, besides a lot of limitations on who and what can be shown. Better than I expected. It’s good so far. I thought that this was going to be a run of the mill Spider-Man cartoon and it’s actually not so far. They make changes in the Spider-Man world but keeps the character the same which is nice and the high school setting somehow doesn’t feel old which is pretty impressive

Everyone always says that we want something different, that regular Spider-Man has been done but it's been a long time since we've gotten regular Spider-Man. The Holland movies are team up movies. Spider verse is multiverse. The last three shows (Ultimate, 2017, and Spider-Man & his amazing friends from 2021) are team up shows. Not since the Andrew Garfield movies and Spectacular Spider-Man (so 10-15 years ago) have we just gotten just plain old Spider-Man and his regular supporting cast, no twist. And beyond Peter B. Parker, it's not since Tobey's movies and the 2003 has he been allowed to be an adult. At this point, just regular adult Spider-Man on solo adventures interacting with his regular cast would be different

Things I liked in the first two episodes 1) all the stuff he does when he's Spider-Man. It's fun to see 2) the side characters r fun (niko & ronnie/tombstone) 3) it's refreshing to see that peter is not a complete loser Things I hate about the show 1) how they handled uncle ben. Idc that the spider that bit peter was from another dimension but uncle ben should've been killed bcz of Peter's actions 2) it hasn't happened yet but they're gonna make the future foundation suit as the OSCORP suit Things I'm mixed on 1) i said that i enjoyed the high school cast but I really want the typical Spider-Man high school cast 2) I'm not a fan of race bending or gender bending. I don't automatically hate any show/movie for it but i just feel that it's weird

Like brilliant job with the Aunt May story in No Way Home, but MCU Peter literally does not mention Uncle Ben at all when other Peters do. That seriously needs to stop, and this was a chance to do that. That’s a shame

Considering how terrible the leadup to this show was, I'm surprised at how strong it started. The marketing was horrible, Marvel didn't generate any buzz about it (it's starting to seem like they just don't have any faith in their animation department), the weird quotes from the lead of the show talking about being worried the show is "too woke", everything was working against this thing, and it still ended up having a very enjoyable start. Marvel really just need to work on their marketing for their animated shows, they did an equally poor job getting people excited for What If seasons 2 and 3 imo.

NGL, felt like they took a note from Transformers One to weirdly subvert expectations when it came to marketing. 😂 I also agree that the comment from the lead was also not the best thing. 🤨However, after really vibing with the premiere and hearing nothing but good things from people who have watched the entire season early (Marvel and other streaming services should do this with all of their shows, animated or live-action), I'm looking forward to see what comes next.

I just finished watching the first two episodes of the new Spider-Man series last night, and I have to say, I wasn't blown away by this version. The pacing felt a bit sluggish, and honestly, the theme song didn't have the same energy or catchiness as the iconic one from the '90s animated series. It's hard not to miss that nostalgia!

Complaining about Peter's origin being altered is weird. They always alter it. In the original comic run and Raimi movie he was bitten by a random genetically altered spider at a random sciene expo. In the ultimate comics it was at oscorp and the spider was a super solider serum test subject. In the Andrew Garfield movies the spider was a part of Dr. Connors' genetic regeneration research. And a reminder, Dr. Strange can't travel the multiverse. That's why he had to dreamwalk in a zombie version of his body in the climax of Multiverse of Madness. He was stuck in the convergence universe with an evil version of himself. There is definitely more to Strange and Venom in this series. They wouldn't just give them an unexplained cameo in the first episode and be done with them. The origins of that spider are yet to be seen

This is the best Spider-Man’s how of the Disney era after they couldn’t get the rights for spectacular. They rebooted to ultimate Spider-Man which was very kitty dumbed down not risk taking show. With surprisingly great animation. But it felt like marvel told them don’t do anything from spectacular. So no Peter Parker home life love life, Real drama and for some reason peter breaks the fourth wall every ten seconds. Then boom onto Spider-Man 2017. This show felt like they didn’t care. Spider-Man can’t just be one person nope he’s got as have other spider people like Gwen Stacy miles morales and I think Liz Alan. Because why not I guess the. Peter barley left horizon high so the times where Peter did Spider-Man through the city for an episode was rare. Peter always needs help from all the other gifted students when fighting because everyone a genius your not special Peter. He barley. Peter never gets to have his own accomplishments. But he is definitely the one Spider-Man to get with MJ at the end so plus 1 for that. This show already on the first two episodes showed they actually cared about what they were making I hope that continues.

Honestly I found these two episodes to mediocre at best which is sad because I really want a good Spider-Man show similar to spectacular Spider-Man and 90’s Spiderman animated series which would’ve been amazing in my opinion and plus a bonus having a continuation of either show would be amazing and having Peter Parker Spider-Man being married to his wife Mary Jane and they have their daughter mayday Parker spider-girl in a show together as a family would’ve been fantastic in my opinion, but nope instead of getting that we got your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man series which is just telling a story of high school Peter Parker Spider-Man which we have done that story to many times that it’s not even interesting anymore at least in my opinion, now with all that being said though do i want this show to fail no I want to be proven wrong 😑 and I want this show to surprise me and be a good show but until then I am going to wait and see what happens with this show as a whole when all the episodes come out as a whole at least in my opinion.

It is different and I don't think it's good. Aside from all the race swaps, the writing just isn't there. 8 minutes into the first episode and I can vaguely tell you about Peter and Aunt May and then we kinda just get a time jump a few months later to him being Spider-Man. We also learn almost nothing else about any of the other characters besides Lonnie. Just look at the first 6 minutes of Spider-Man (2002) and the scene between Harry, Norman, and Peter. In like 2 minutes we get the kind of relationship Norman has with his son and how Norman is already more interested in Peter for being a genius. I can go on, but this new show ain't it (mind you I am only 2 episodes in and I would like to say it gets better when the other episodes come out). If you want me to compare it to another show, look at Spectacular Spider-Man. First two minutes of the first episode of that introduces the future Sandman and Rhino and also Hammerhead, and Tombstone. They establish quickly that Spider-Man has a brief history with Marco and O'Hirn and that Tombstone has been keeping an eye on Spider-Man, which leads him to send the Enforcers. Within the next three minutes after that we get how Aunt May is struggling financially and Adrian Toomes and his motivations for hating OsCorp and Norman Osborn.

Love your stuff normally Sean, but I was somewhat surprised by your take here. I found this show to be borderline offensive. The MCUification of Spider-Man is seeping into his portrayals across all mediums, and it will be the slow death of this character if left unchecked. You can’t strip a central character of all their defining traits and relatable characteristics and expect me to still identify with them. I have no clue what Peter’s motivation to be Spider-Man is in this show, and yes it’s just one interpretation of the character, but it’s a fundamentally less interesting version of the character because of that.

Raceswapping is racist as it insults the race you swap from and panders to the race you swap to. Also, most of the villains are white and most of the good characters are brown. We know the reason why they did this and it's racism. That alone is reason enough for this show to deserve to fail. The sob stories to the bad guys sounds more like sympathetic villains and reminds me of our modern day soft on crime policies that ruin our cities. The lack of uncle Ben screams misandry too. The only people who would excuse the hate in this show are chumps who don't pay attention to society.
