I once worked with a very knowledgeable mechanic whose specialty was automatic transmissions... when he was dismantling one and he came across a part he knew he would not need during the re-build, he'd just throw it over his shoulder, it was funny, kinda like the piece of melamine you cast aside. You can make me chuckle... and this is besides the good work you do.

That mirror is truly beautiful, I was hoping it was tiger oak and not a transfer seems my hope was realised. That dresser when it's all together apart from being huge, it will no doubt after you've worked your magic look absolutely stunning. With the mirror you need to be careful touching it, as at that time they did use a mixture of tin and mercury as well as a thin silver sheet. 👍

¡A special piece of furniture! Felicitaciones estimada Trena saludos y bendiciones. You gave me the confidence to take apart and repair our antique oak fall front desk. Using what you showed me I was able to craft a new back and bottom for the long drawer. Plus how to diagnose and adjust a file drawer that was jamming up. Now both drawers work perfectly and the rest of piece has a fresh finish. It should be good for another hundred years. ❤❤

It was tough to tell on video, real or print. But as I commented last week when I paused the video you could see the grain on the rubbed edges, so it was clearly real. Redoing those mirrors can be very expensive, and finding someone to do it, even harder. To save the customer money, and preserve the original glass we would remove all of the mirror backing, then put a new mirror behind it. Not a perfect solution, but it can work for some folks. Plus 8 degrees here in Nova Scotia today.
@johnsfurniturerepair10 күн бұрын
plus 8 no fair! lol. thats an interesting idea although how was thier room for a second glass in the frame?
@sid515able10 күн бұрын
We used muriatic acid to clean all of the silvering off of the back of the mirror. Everyone that we did always had just enough room as the new mirrors were only an eighth of an inch thick.

I had to go to my garage and check. My table saw is still there. I like my portable Contractor Ridgid table saw. Easy to move around, plenty of power and smooth, good choice. It pulls the amps. I can't run saw and vac at same time also. It is a -38* degrees. I thought 14* this morning in Tulsa, Oklahoma was cold. I have only restored a chair and a dresser. The little dresser had been refinished by someone. It had a very dark wipe on stain that they did not wipe off. It was so thick, when I tried to strip the finish, it gummed up into a mess. I finally sanded it off. I had to do many of the same things you did. Straighten and re-glue drawers and frame to bring back square. If I remember correctly, it was Haywood industries. There was only 3 like it in USA and they would not sell them. The original dresser had a very light tan like finish. The owner wanted somewhat dark so that is what I did. Great video, I pick up many tips and tricks. Thank you, stay warm.

I have a dresser that looks a lot like this one, except the drawer fronts are not curved and the mirror stanchions (if that's what you call them) are more ornate. I had a feeling it was pretty old, but you've supplied me with a guess for how old it probably is. Mine is in much better shape physically though for which I am glad, plus I don't think my tiger oak is a veneer, I think it's made of solid wood.

Hi Trena. Thank you for sharing this repair. For me the best reveal was the figuring in the drawer fronts once you'd removed the treacle of a finish from the piece. Great video Trena, As always, learned some new restoration tricks from you. My DeWalt table saw, when on the same circuit as a vacuum, popped a 20 amp circuit as soon as I pushed it a bit. Finally split sawing and dust collection between two circuits and it worked fine. Just upgraded to the Compact SawStop after I tripped and nearly stuck my 82-year old hand into the blade. Worth a think. Looking forward to part 2. Stay safe.
@johnsfurniturerepair10 күн бұрын
oh dear. that is scary. the new shop will have all the power needed, as well as a new saw this one is terrible and a cheap excuse for a table saw.
@davidwright968810 күн бұрын
@@johnsfurniturerepair Hi Trena. I know it's expensive, but bite the bullet and buy the SawStop. The quality is there and it will save your fingers. I've had 50 years of luck (and not much common sense, I'm afraid) with table saws. They scare the dickens out of me now, but no matter how experienced you are and no matter how careful, all it takes is one mistake...and you are maimed for life! If you don't need cabinet size (and I doubt you do) buy the Compact. It's well-designed and very accurate right out of the box.

The mirror for my 1931 waterfall walnut vanity/ bathroom vanity ( horrendous stains and damage on top made it perfect to install a bathroom sink with minimal guilt) The silvering paint was also orange Someone used gorilla glue to hold glass in frame😖😖😖 I set the frame into a piece of gilded channel aluminum and it straightened it so the glass sits in perfectly So I lost patches of silvering at the bottom I decided I could never match the crazied silver so I used gold leaf. It still looks nice and matches the brass deco style hardware The point is The replacement silvering paste was REALLY expensive No way to guarantee that the glass wouldn’t fit the metal bracket after it was made thicker I love my antique beveled mirror The gold leaf doesn’t detract from its beauty Good luck with that mirror I can attest that the orange silvering is SCARY fragile

Nice repair! I recall once, buying some furniture from some Ashley store. Supposed to be reputable. When I received it, their "delivery" ruined a new wood floor because they never put the pads on the feet. Then, we realized their tables were just painted grain...and solid because of MDF that was veneered or some poplar stained to look like maple, even with splatter marks of the stain underneath. Old furniture with "real" wood and grain is getting scarce to find.
