My conductor doesn’t use a baton, so she just does these really extra hand movements that involve her entire body. She doesn’t use the baton anymore because she “accidentally” always threw it at the first chair viola.

In fact, at first i saw alot more Brett lovers, but turns out there's the same amount of stanners for both of them the more i look into it! @@onlyalf. Totally agree ! I personally can't choose, I love both of them for different reasons. They're a duo, you can't have one without the other. It's like asking whether you prefer your left shoe or your right shoe. You just need both ! That being said, I kinda have "phases". When they are together, I realized that I tend to watch or listen to one of them more. It used to be Brett, then it was Eddy for a while, and I'm now back to Brett. Don't ask me why... 😅

Don't forget! Your conductor may or may not inexplicably skip a beat, or even stop conducting to favor dictating the rhythm for one section of the whole symphony! (Not that it mattered because we're all watching the concert master still)

I had a random thought the other day about how an orchestra can follow the conductor during a performance and what exactly the conductor does in the first place. I watched a few videos but still didn't fully get it. Then I found this video, and this is exactly what I needed. Actually answering my questions in a comedic way. I love it.

I like when I have different conductors bc I get different teaching methods, but my god! It always sucks when you have to decipher how they count off with the baton. They all do it differently and then you get judged when you don't know how to follow them, yet! The first ten minutes at Honor Band, I was just trying to figure out the conductor's motions and I was so lost lol

This is so so accurate. I remember one conductor where the whole orchestra would mutter about his "below the belt conducting"- he kept his hands so low that no one back in the winds and brass could see his hands from behind his music stand. And then he would get angry when we didn't play the way he wanted (because, you know, he was telling us exactly what to do with his hands that none of us could see...) And then there's Valery Gergiev. I'm not even an orchestral musician anymore and watching performances where he's conducting gives me anxiety!!!

One time during a concert my conductor actually knocked over my notes as the stage was pretty small and we had to sit too closely together. At first I panicked, but played along and the girl next to me quickly put them back up, then was cued in by the conductor again. That was probably the most stressful stage experience of my life.

In highschool it was always a struggle to understand where my conductor was. I remember playing a piece called Arabesque, where the first 2 1/2 minutes or so are a flute solo accompanied by the occasional brass/percussion hit. While there is a time signature, the solo is generally played freely by the soloist. We did fine during all of our practices, and when the night of the concert arrived, he decided to dramatically cue that massive brass sting - but he did it 2 measures early. The brass section, not used to the cue, understandably went along with it. So I just skipped ahead to where the solo continued, like nothing happened. If you didn't know the piece, nothing would've seemed out of place. But we never let our conductor forget.

As funny as this video was, it really made me remember my time in orchestra and choir during my high school days. I had the same music teacher for both classes which made it easy for me to understand his conducting. I always held deep respect for his music acumen and conducting skills. He really made it easy to feel the energy of the piece and play/sing accordingly as a result. I miss my high school conductor dearly and I hope he's doing well.
