Mannnn these braiders are incredibly disrespectful. My hair shouldn’t be popping and breaking in the braids. We also need to stop calling these protective styles and it’s damaging hair, it’s not even low manipulation bc when u install and uninstall it’s a ton of manipulation. It’s just braids lol.

The thing is when you braid your hair you’re supposed to leave it on for a long period. That’s what makes it low manipulation because your hair gets a break from your fingers and combs all over it for a few weeks hopefully. I don’t think many black women understand that. But yes, see somebody who will be gentle with your hair.

They also trim the excess hair sticking out of the braids. It could trip your own hair

I learned to braid my own hair in the 90s...so I know when it's tight. When I was 8 or 9 years old my mom took me to this braider to get a crown cornrow braid style...You know the next day I had undone the style. Lol! My family were upset cause they spent all the time money and energy getting my hair done and I was like nope...too painful. I was a lot of work as a child and I'm still the same way as an adult. Lol! How I keep most of my hair in braids, kinky twists and cornrows: 1. It can't be done tight. 2. They can't rip through your hair if it's not detangled properly 3. Eliminate styling products or use a minimal amount. 4. I shampoo my scalp every week and deep condition the hair. I'm not afraid of frizz..my natural hair is frizzy even if it's healthy. I redo the frizziest parts my self. 5. I use braid spray and scalp spray every day. 6. I only wear the style for 12 weeks out of 52. 7. I make sure that my hair has been given a trim, moisture treatment, a protein treatment and a bond builder treatment before putting in the braids and after 12 weeks when I take them out. 8. When you take the braids out detangle with an oil/butter or grease to reduce friction on dry hair before you wet the hair. I use seamless combs ( wide, medium and small toothed) and The Wet Tangle Teezer for fine and fragile hair before I even think about adding water. I'm 43 with all my edges so my method works for me.

What's the point of so called protective styles? Looks like it doesn't protect anything

The style has to be installed and removed with care. You have to care for your hair and scalp before, during and after the style. I only wear kinky twist extensions for 12 weeks of 52. I have to rotate my styles so that I can shampoo my scalp and deep condition my hair properly every week. I have to use braid spray and scalp spray daily while I have extensions. The problems come when people do not do the care aspect of it.
