The News and media have a job to do and that is to report the facts and let the viewers make informed opinions. Some media report their point of view and let the viewer decide what is fact and what is fiction, which leads to confusion and cult followings. I'm happy to watch and absorb your presentation of the facts, thank you.

Thanks John for addressing this topic, one that is grossly misunderstood and not taken seriously in the private sector. I look at it thru the lens of the commercial side which in my opinion adds clarity to the discussion. One sector is under a magnifying glass and the other gets away with murder(sometimes). Hopefully, your classes in the laws of physics are gaining traction in some peoples grey matter. Please continue.

Hi John yesterday on our way to Broken Hill for work we encountered a Suburu liberty towing a car trailer with a Suburu Liberty on it! Go figure. Tank slaps ensured but the peanut behind the wheel kept on trucking!!! On that same road some years ago I attended a vehicle accident as a member of the CFS, whereby a car trailer had tank slapped, the trailer whipped into the path of a on coming vehicle, the impact dislodged the car on the trailer and it went through the windscreen of the on coming vehicle decapitating the innocent driver. I have since that incident, believed that drivers should be licensed to be able to tow any weight over 1 tonne, or a weight 75% or greater than the tow vehicle. Love the channel, keep up the good work. Regards David.

Thank you John , your attacks on ignorant people using trailers . It has helped me a lot. I have a trailer about 6x4 and I don’t know it’s 1, tear weight or its loaded weight . But it’s unbreaked and it’s a bit of a bugger if you have it full of fire wood. 2 what is its tear weight. These things I don’t know . However I’ve looked up what the max towing weight for my 2000 Rav 4 . 750 kg Thanks again for your information and I will before I use it again weigh stuff and make my next load legal. More power to you mate

It is tare weight is the unloaded weight. If the unloaded traileras 250 kg then you can drag no more than 500 kg of wood. ( No idea what yours is, go to your local dump, for example and over its weigh bridge, it will cost but cheap for the info.)

Hi John, if memory serves a few months ago you reported on a couple that were involved in serious crash due to a very overloaded car and caravan where sadly the woman died. As part of the verdict at the trial, and again from memory, the judge determined that the act of dangerous driving wasn’t the moments just prior to the crash, it was the entire trip, given how overloaded the car and caravan combination was. Now, like you I’m no caravaner, but if I was, a precedent like that would really sharpen my focus as being done for, “Dangerous driving”, is no joke, especially if it comes with an, “occasioning death”, kicker. Given the precedent, do you know if the cops are now dishing out, “Dangerous driving”, summonses at the highway weigh-bridge?
@larrybe2900
@larrybe2900 Жыл бұрын
With so many variables in the towing realm of this type it may be prudent to be reactionary because the configuration of the unit can change from the outset to the conclusion. A totally appropriate configuration could be given the stamp of approval only to be overloaded later. All in all it has to be education and a hope for the best that vehicle manufacturer cgvw minimizes negative outcomes.

They don’t do this for overloaded trucks so I can’t see them doing it anytime soon for cars and caravans. Truck driver (and up through CoR) cops a fine only for overloaded, not dangerous driving.
@rossatkinson3160
@rossatkinson3160 Жыл бұрын
@Phantomthecat however the outcome of a serious accident will be charges of dangerous driving causing GVBH or even death. Being overweight in itself is not a criminal charge, but have an accident while overloaded causing gvbh or death, and better pack your soap on a rope when you face the judge. Even if you technically did not cause the accident, just being overloaded will make you culpable. Not sure I would want to test this in court any time soon.

A mate of mine used to tow his boat (12000lbs) with his mustang convertible. I drove it once, the rear end was so badly bent and collapsed that it was almost impossible to keep the sodding thing in a straight line when accelerating. I’m amazed he didn’t turn his stang into a submarine when trying to pull the boat trailer out of the water. I guess some people just aren’t very bright.

Hi John, something peripheral to this. The other day I was getting my car rego checked (406K VE 3.0 - only needed front tyres) and there was a "full house" HiLux up on the hoist getting a service. You name it, it had it - springs, bars, crash plates, winch, awning, huge wheels, flairs. You know the drill - take an overpriced 4WD and double its price at ARB. I've been using these blokes as mechanics for 20 years and they tolerate me in the workshop - I also like to geek out looking at engines etc. Anyway, I mentioned that all that crap would probably be getting the vehicle up to GVM. The mechanic and I've always trusted him, reckoned you could up the GVM with suitable spring kits. Surely this can't be right - the GVM must be a product of the entire chassis, springs, shocks, bars, pickup points - all the stuff that holds your ass off the tarmac. Can you elucidate on this? Looking forward to getting reamed on using "elucidate" too.

Superb John. Margarites email to you about dropping a loggy in a portaslum whilst in motion, reminded me of the indignity of what happens days later after dropping said loggy. Depending on the portaslum it'll go into a holding tank to fester which is possibly the better outcome as a lot less contact is required. I've seen what is needed with a composting on board crapper and that is vomit inducing. The various cassette types are the most unpleasant due to the regularity of the decanting. I saw an old bloke recently pulling what appeared to be a suitcase from his portaslum to a council dump point. I was trying to enjoy my lunch in the park whilst he dumped his suitcase full of festering effluent. Once the seal was cracked and the juice was flowing the air was permeated by the smell of 1000 arse holes all farting at once in perfect synchronisation. Just another reason why I'll never own any sort of portaslum. How about a video on the various portaslum toilet systems.
@rossatkinson3160
@rossatkinson3160 Жыл бұрын
Not an issue with a composting toilet. The new one in my old shit box mobile house on wheels, does not smell like the horrible old wet septic cassettes. Only empty every 80 odd bogs. vs every 3 days, just have to tip out the piss bottle every 2-3 days.

Hi John, I would like to see you do a piece on self-build campervans? While some hobby builders are responsible, there seems to be quite a few that are not. While it does save money to "roll your own" as far as this type of mobile fun home goes, a lot of them are overweight, and not balanced properly. This not only can make them unsafe, but also strain the drive train, and suspension. In addition [again due to personal economics], they may invest heavily in 3-way fridges, expensive composting toilets, hot water showers and water storage: [fresh, grey and blackwater], stoves, beds, cupboards and the like, and put it all in a clapped-out long wheelbase, high roof van that is as old as Methuselah and whose odometer has the equivalent of a couple of trips to the moon and back! 🙂 A reality check on current costs of home ownership [both renting and owning a home has gone through the roof], some people are turning to some sort of permanent mobile home set-up, mostly done on the cheap. Anyway, it is just a thought......

yep we see this here in the U.S., though a lot of good builds for sale it seems lately, albeit we dn't use diesels for most part, so it's typically the Ford w/ v6 gasoline/petrol which is quite the hog to say the least, with a fully built out american style set-up. Ford kindly provides a diesel here but no one buys it. Mercedes is the spendy and preferred by some or many perhaps ,ie those who can spend double, and that's usually a 4 cyl diesel, which seems like a not long term durability-minded engine choice or this type rig, though if mechanics here ever gain diesel skills maybe they will be rebuilt, in theory, though i'm guessing that's not feasible with such engines anyway. As for weight distribution and design, there are laws but only enforced if there's an accident, for most part.

Trailers around now have the axels set rearward so it makes backing them easier. It really does help reversing, very good for inexperienced trailer reversers, if that is even a noun. The best way to reverse a trailer is to place your dominant hand on the six o’clock position, then just turn the wheel where you want the trailer to go, watching in RV mirrors. Even goofy ten thumbs passion fingers peoples can manage it ! But yes, the rearset axles make bulk difference. The little Hyundai could have gone on backwards, exactly like you pointed out, AutoExpert John.

Hey John, you ask "what is it with this journalism and trust thing" well have a read at this. John Swinton - New York Press Club in 1880... Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club in 1880, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Sun, made this candid confession [it's worth noting that Swinton was called "The Dean of His Profession" by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]: "There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes." TIMES HAVE NOT CHANGED.

I'm so glad proper towing practice is important in Australia, coz it's very important to me personally, but fuck all unenforced in most US states (even though mandates, regulations & laws are clearly marked out); in 2019 one of my best friends was killed by a recklessly overloaded trailer detaching from a mini truck flying 75mph down interstate 10 through Houston. The detached trailer (a loaded car dolly) rolled across all 4 lanes taking out multiple vehicles, and she's impaled against her car door by oncoming traffic piling up one by one while trying to exit a burning vehicle in the middle of the highway, where traffic had 0 chance of stopping in time. I think 11 vehicles in total were involved. It was gruesome. Yet to this day I continue to see this bullshit all over the south.. Double decker car haulers and huge flat beds you usually see pulled by 18-wheelers being pulled by consumer Ram 3500 pickups, old mini trucks pulling 12ft trailers full of mulch and other assorted nonsense. Shit flying everywhere in the process. Makes me shake with anger.

It should be important, but frig all of the offenders take notice. We have overloaded vehicles driving at 70kmh on the highway, and when you get to a good bit or overtake lanes they punch it to 120kmh because God forbid anyone gets past them.

Funny you should mention that because quite often I see videos in the US of exactly that, some nut bag loads an excavator or small bulldozer onto a trailer and tows it with their RAM. Add to that the chassis on some of those rust belt cars and they’re a disaster looking for somewhere to happen. Over here (Australia) it would be on a tilt tray or low loader. Sorry to hear about your best friend, it’s devastating enough but when you find out why it must be so hard to fathom.

@@scroungasworkshop4663 Sadly that's just the way it is down here, rather third world.. Shot roads, everything run down, courts pick and choose what laws they want to enforce on any given day, cops will respond immediately to drug calls but not gunshots or traffic violations. Unregistered vehicles are a HUGE problem and drunk drivers are now the norm there's just too many of them. 25 years ago if you were caught pulling loads like that without following laws to the letter you'd lose your vehicle and your license forever in that state (GVR and tie-down was taken very seriously as was commercial licensing, CDL's). Now all you need is a Ram that anyone can buy, and just like that you're now a trucker who can move houses and pull mining & refinery equipment, 6,000lbs worth of dirt with a Ford Ranger etc. It's disgusting.

@Drmcclung Жыл бұрын
@@k53847 Not exactly. There are very strict limits in all states (some of the law is Federal) to the *weight* you cal pull on a regular joe blow class C driver's license, regardless of your vehicle GVR; Just owning a Ram 3500 pickup that can haul 30 million Americans tons (but not stop it) and giant trailer big enough to stack all your heavy shit onto plus the whole house with the kitchen sink in it doesn't mean you're legally allowed to do that. Over certain weights you're required by law to carry a class A commercial license, which certifies that you're well trained and able to manage such huge loads, the vehicle you're carrying all the shit with is adequate to *stop* it, and that you the driver of said shit know the weight limits of the physical road you're hauling all that heavy on (don't go trying to pull 15 tons down a 2 lane state road not physically rated for the weight - this is why our roads are so shot to shit like something you'd find in Guatemala, law means nothing anymore). SO, tragically, this bullshit is not going away anytime soon. You should see the road death stats attributed to lost/mismanaged loads from amateur "I think I'm a truck driver" assholes, usually from Brodozers.

Pardon my ignorance. Isn't inertia the state of being inert? I understood "overcoming inertia" as the physical fight to move over the tendency to remain stationary (or inert). The way you speak it sounds like inertia is motion. Please help this befuddled viewer. If a bit of thrashing is part of your answer it will be appreciated.

@@YZJB I didn't mean to suggest my complete ignorance. I already had an addmitedly flawed understaing of "overcoming inertia". It was Johns use of "inertia" where I think motion would have been correct. I think in your example that even maintaining a constant speed is overcoming inertia, unless in a vacuum. Been largely true though even for cities of a supposedly 'liberal' nature. Fact is that a fashy vibe has always been around but possibly increasing since the social divide of the late '60's (which itself is considered by socio/anthro's/historians to be the initial cause of the 'culture wars' today. But in any case, an officer who is in that overly eager mode when driving to an incident, is one of our most statistically problematic accident causers. We need to slow it down in urban places and the american culture has been too manic for way way too long.

@Auto Expert John Cadogan Minion: noun - a follower or underling of a powerful person, especially a servile or unimportant one. I'm naturally a humble person John. IMO it is unkind of you to describe me as a minion. I was tasked to conduct a review of pursuits. Thereafter I was tasked with delivering a limited pursuit policy. I held a view, a sentiment of you will that I struggled to express. Your video largely put into words my outlook. When conducting the review, I told you that as a renowned and well regarded journalist that I intended to reference your piece and asked you if you had any objection to my doing so I thought this was an appropriate and respectful courtesy. You in turn asked that I share said reference ahead of publication - we both agreed. This is how it went down. Why you couldn't have used the term 'member of', 'police officer from' or some other descriptor other than minion is for you. A subordinate of the CPO (not the Commissioner as you said it to be) would have also been accurate. Just very unkind when it didn't need to be is all - my opinion of course.

Aside from a more or less completely stripped out interior, there's nothing special design-wise about the zero-g training aircraft (they call it the Vomit Comet). Last I heard it was a 737, maybe nowadays it's something else, but the M.O. remains the same - take an airliner, rip out the interior, fly parabolas at higher altitude, and voila - zero g. I'd advise people looking for information is that there's a number of pitfalls along the way which get tapped into Objectivity- we're schooled literally to trust what we read, all through primary and high school. Its really only when you get into higher education that you learn to take things apart and figure out how an argument is constructed, the meaning behind the written words on a page and other factors which come into play when the piece was written. Its a leaned skill and I encourage anyone to learn it and step outside your interests, viewpoints and pre-set ideas. Narcissism- we all have it to some degree, hopefully not a lot, but the real fruitbat fringes who claim 'secret knowledge' appeal to the narcissism factor that you can be special, you can know something no one else does and feel smug in the fact you're not part of the sheeple. Its a ruse to suck you into that trap, so be careful about how something makes you feel, if it feels way too good then its sort of like intellectual heroin and you'll want that feeling more and more. Algorithms- these things are diabolical in that social media runs on these things and so does their advertising, you can quickly get stuck in a rut with the media choice being only given to you, you'll only end up speaking to people online which share those views and it turns into an echo chamber. This is more risky behaviour because it conditions you to lose objectivity, you get thin skin in arguments and criticism when someone tries to present a different idea. That's your 2023 risk management for using the internet from me, stay safe out there

You seem to have toned things down somewhat. Didn’t this used to be the nut bag comments section?. I am curious in regard to the last letter writer though. If there was an Anti-Gravity caravan why would there not be a Anti-Gravity Outback or even an Outback at all?. Wouldn’t you just have the caravan self propel with fusion technology and just program your destination via the onboard control module? I am sure by this stage in the future it would not be illegal to travel in such a device as everything else would be controlled in a similar manner with no human interaction. This then leads to the question of why would you even needs roads? Shifting back to reality, I really enjoy these open discussions and I am so glad Chasing Cars took down that potentially dangerous video.

What are my rights here?
