A friend of mine thinks I’m crazy when I just take stuff to the Goodwill or other thrift stores. She thinks I should sell it on craigslist etc. But I just don’t want to deal with it. I don’t want to deal with strange people coming to my house. To me it’s just not worth the hassle. Yeah I could make a little bit of money but when it comes down to it, it’s just not worth it.

Just did a whole house decluttering and man, it feels good. My house feels so much bigger. We aren’t selling for a couple years, but my adult kids moved out so it was the perfect time for us to start Swedish Death Cleaning. We will have so much less to move when we downsize in a couple years. Great video as always!

Sometimes you can get in touch with estate sale folks if you have a collection of something you want to sell. They may take it on consignment and store it until it sells. I plan on doing that with some silver service items I no longer have use for. Thank you for your great videos Jen!

I had decluttered a few years before putting my house on the market - so I thought I had plenty of time. Not so. I was running out of time and I felt the market window would be closing (it was). So I totally agree with your suggestion regarding pack it and deal with it later. I had a lot of storage area in my new house so I stopped stressing and just let the movers take it. If I hadn't, I think I would have regretted at least some items - or would have been upset if I had to buy them again, after throwing the originals in the trash. A lot of good tips - especially working room by room - instead of a little here and a little there. Once the room was done, I was able to keep it spotless and minimized. Thanks for your ideas!

WOW, what a VERY concise and important video and thanks for sharing, Jen! My last house in CA. was an older house with VERY small closets and I had to empty everything out of them to make them look a bit bigger before listing the house. What I did was move all the clothes and items to the inside of the detached garage for temporary storage. And added to your clutter list could be the word "Sell" but since selling takes time, best to put those smaller things in a tote to deal with at a later time before selling the house OR after moving into the new house. Thanks again for the tips, Jen, and nearly all of us need to purge, even if we are not selling, since owning too many things causes clutter and DOES add to stress in our lives. I would start with getting rid of the storage unit. As long as you don’t bring any of the stuff from the storage unit back to your house.

Not to be a constant critic of your thoughts, but whenever I was in the market for a new house, these were my criteria: price range, location, style, size. Then when I went to look at them, 1st was curb appeal, then general conditions, the layout of the interior and whether or not there was clutter and other stuff did not matter, because it would be gone at the end. I also knew I had to do a few cosmetic "things" according to my taste and if those were too much I just walked away, Decluttering and staging were sort of unknown in the past, now it has become an industry and that is something I'm not too fond of. Buyers should be astute enough to see through the stuff accumulated by the old owners and then envision those places according to their needs and taste. The last house I bought, a second home and14 years ago, was a nightmare the way it was decorated and the amount of stuff all over, but I liked the location, curb appeal, size and the layout and I knew all that junk would be gone, a little repainting, new tasteful, to me, furniture, and here I am and all without the need of "decluttering and staging" which was all done in my head when I looked at it. My thoughts on the subject.

I don't disagree with your thought process - its more about adjusting to what buyer expectations are today. Some buyers won't care, but if you want your home to appeal to the widest audience, you'll need to focus on decluttering and staging....and this is not my opinion - this is based on hard data. A lot has changed over the past 10 years....I appreciate you sharing YOUR thoughts ☺️

Simple tip. If it wasn't used for 6 months get rid of it . .. That way you never get in situations of clutter. With today's social media and many ways to resell used items dosent get any easier.
