The secret to 3D mixes is to change the size and shape of all 3 dimensions in response to the song itself. Gregory Scott aka "UBK", the brain behind Kush Audio's plugins and analog hardware, shares another unique and high-level mixing concept to help you take your mixing game to the next level.

I'm amazed on how I sometimes prefer an element earlier in the process and I can just go in there to grab it and put it back in the latest version. Simply amazing.

That, for me, was absolute #1 workflow benefit that led me to go 100% ITB. I didn't care so much about perfect recall, but the ability to experiment and try out crazy, bold ideas without fear of losing what I'd done... INVALUABLE. I'll use Logic's "alternative" to branch the mix off, explore whatever crazy idea(s) I have, then check back with that earlier branch. It's 50/50 and sometimes I'll be like "nope, that's a fail" but half the time I'm like "that's sooo much better". The freedom to explore like that is priceless to me!

Understanding music making as a whole process, from composition to engineering, is a key concept that I feel is not stressed enough in other sources. Not everything can be fixed in the mix! In case you haven’t heard these before: A good place to start is gain staging in mono. You’ll hear which instruments you want quieter (in the back), and which louder (front), and either lower them or bring them up. Afterward you can shave highs from the sounds you want in the back. And then you can use diff reverb settings (like pre delay) for the front and back sounds. Some ideas.

I have to say, I love the way you explain production techniques in terms of how the listener will FEEL the results, not just hear them. That's the ultimate goal of music to begin with: to evoke feelings. Why should we expect to be able to do that if we don't know how? Keep it coming.

You explain these things really well. This is my take on the subject efter watching this video: Contrasts are the most important thing in creating powerful music. To really FEEL darkness it requires light To feel width, narrowness is required To feel depth requires "in your face" For something to be experienced as loud, silence is required To really notice a thing, absence is required If you have everything all the time, nothing becomes special. Humans are storytellers. We fit every new experience into the narrative of our own story. So tell a story with the song. What do all the sounds in a song really say? What role in the story do they play? What emotions are evoked by the sounds? Do they fit the story? Surprises make a story exciting, but they can also make it incoherent if it does not fit into the narrative. Descriptiveness makes a story beautiful. It paints the picture. Create contrasts between sections by changing the room completely and let, for example, fills or melodic elements describe the transition, let them be the reason why we ended up in a new place. I’m bringing these notes to the studio. It is great how you make us viewers create our own understanding on the matter by not showing us in a DAW but rather telling us about it. Thank you Gregory!

First and foremost, thank you for this unbelievable treat of mixing/ mastering related channel. The videos on compression pretty much made me fall in love for the fist time with a processor and its processes; I never really understood the attack and release parameters in terms of how they affect the transient, texture, color and brightness of a signal, let alone all the artistic implications and possibilities. Going back to the topic of this video, I don't know if I'm making a wrong correlation but the dimensions of a mix/song also share lots of the properties with sound itself. As to say; pitch give us the sense of height, the sense of sides in a way has to do (besides the balance and panning etc.) with power and amplitude, and lastly the front and back is more a timbre thing? Well, hehe, that's what I got. Anyways. Thanks. Really I mean. I kinda owe you one.

With regards to the height of a mix , it’s good to know that low frequencies will pull a sound down and high frequencies will pull it up. It’s not just bass that is low down, but sounds with a low element will be pulled down. You can use this info to the vertical position of a sound and you should aim to have a 3 level “stack” of high, mid and low sounds at the left, right and centre of the mix.

Mixing can be done artistically this way without have to almost re-write a song in term of arrangement. love how you explain without actually demonstrating. Words :) are enough, for some reason i take more information in this way.

Thanks! There'll definitely be times when I'll need to crack open the DAW and demonstrate some stuff that would otherwise be indescribable, but most of the time I think it'd just be a distraction :-)

REALLY GREAT video. You are the master. Instead of doing demos where you bypass plugins, you actually get into the philosophy of what we're doing. Bless you sir.

Thanks! I think the hardest part about teaching this is you have to understand not just the technical and black magic stuff, you have to understand the language of music and the way the human brain receives, filters, and processes information. That's a lot to unpack, and even the best of us have giant holes in our understanding!

@@TheHouseofKushTV 😂must have been a TV show, linguistics are strange. I'm from north of Detroit, but my Grandma was from western KY, and lots of farmers on that side of the family...so.......it slips out sometimes.
