Hopefully the vertical farm can survive. All of the other others I’ve ever heard of went out of business because they can’t provide a product at a cost-effective price.
@metropolis103 ай бұрын
yup, always cheaper to clearcut the rainforest. hopefully tarrifs/taxes can change that like they did with coal in the UK.
@ShaudaySmith3 ай бұрын
i've heard the same. They are a lot more expensive to build and maintain. The yields aren't better or greater for the time and energy put into it over conventional ground farming methods. I want them to succeed, but it looks like they have a little ways to go.

The bees were the good news story I enjoyed the most because even with the vertical farming being "successful" (not needing bees), we still heavily need them.
@Gesteppie3 ай бұрын
It would be (no pun intended) very interesting and fun to explore a vertical farm that also produces honey. Honey flavour can be affected by the plants the bees get their nectar from, and with the whole system being closed, there would be minimal risk of disease to both plants and bees!!! A win win 😊 plus delicious honey!!

Love your videos. A bit doubtful about the "worlds first vertical strawberry farm" claim tho. Personally I was involved with a Swiss startup that did the same. And vertical farms, while still niche, are not a new thing and pop up every once in a while, at least here in Europe. A vertical farm with the capability to mass produce and stay viable and competitive with the ultra optimized practices of regular farming, that will be the next big challenge.

Thanks for the great stories! It makes me feel better just knowing you posted a video :) I would like to mention that in the Diabetes part, a "hyper" is when you have too much sugar and a "hypo" is when you lack sugar. Hyperglycemia is bad for the body on the long run, but a hypoglycemia can be fatal in a few minutes if untreated. It is important to mention the hypoglycemia part because a lot of people are scared to give sugar to a type 1 like me, but refusing to give sugar or give "fake" sugar without us knowing it's fake can be extremely dangerous. I'm so happy you covered this story tho, I haven't heard about it before! so cool!!!
@Windmelodie2 ай бұрын
And it's important to recognise the symptoms of hypo if you are with someone who is diabetic. I remember my Mum's best friend, who had Type-1, going hypo once when she stayed the night. Mum was confused because her friend was acting as if she was drunk (slurred speech, lack of coordination, reacting dismissively/irritated when asked about her blood sugar levels) until Mum realised what was going on. She immediately got her some fruit juice and even though her friend refused to drink, my Mum dipped her finger in the juice and stuck it in her friends mouth, rubbing it over the inside of her lips. She repeated that a few times and eventually got her friend enough sugar, that she herself could realise what was going on and take proper measures. Personally, I have "Type-2 in pregnancy" (so not gestational diabetes, but Type-2 made worse by being pregnant I guess?) and my issue is more of the opposite, having too high blood sugar. But me and my husband have also been trained to keep an eye out for hypoglycemia and to either drink juice or eat some glucose (the ones that come in little chip form)

I love what you're doing and think it's for a noble cause - it's very needed on the internet and in media in general. I just wish you weren't so America-centric and reported so much on the Western world. I think real positive change happens in countries that need it, and where change leads to positives for people that aren't so fortunate as us in the rich western world. Will vertically grown strawberries that use huge amounts of electricity to grow really benefit the world? I'm not so sure. I think it'd be lovely to hear about systemic changes, minorities' rights, women's rights, all these important things, in countries where that might not be so abundant. In a world that is leaning further and further right, I think these are the positive news that a lot of people would yearn to hear about (if they even are out there). Sorry for the rant, but the American election has really got me losing hope for the world and so I turned to these positive news, but they just seem so shallow in the grand scheme of things.

The UK news about the last coal power station closing, whilst sounding good ignores the issue of Draxx power station. Draxx is highly controversial, as it was converted from coal to wood chip. It's arguably worse for the environment due to where some of these wood chips come from, which in some cases has been from deforestation. It's also reliant on massive 'green' subsidies from the tax payer.
@Oceanwaves-d8l3 ай бұрын
About the tax payer --- coal has _also_ been subsidised heavily by the taxpayer too. I don't get why people act like it's only an issue for clean energy.

Vertical farms have been tried and test for the last decade and a half, it requires a lot of energy that makes it unusable for anything but cash crops, but not the normal cash crops. In fact, so far only marijuana has been profitable enough to sustain it. I mean they are basically greenhouses that trade natural sunlight and heat, for lots of LED lights. They could work but the costs have to be brought WAY down.

Great to have good news but firms growing strawberries will not feed the world as the climate changes - perhaps kale and broccoli would be better. We closed our last tensing coal power plant but still burn wood in millions of tons of pellets so spewing out carbon daily. We need tidal power. We are an island surrounded by the sea and yet no one has the will to do it. More is being spent on small nuclear power stations near towns!!! Where is all the waste going? Cumbria which is one of our most beautiful areas. Sigh

Strawberry lover from Canada. I whole heartedly disagree. We grow strawberries year round in green houses and they taste just as wonderful as the ones grown in season. The best part is there are no pesticides when you grow in greenhouses! Strawberries are the #1 fruit with the most pesticides. I believe all produce should be grown in greenhouses just for that alone.

@think41813 ай бұрын
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease and not (except if this new treatment works) curable, preventable, or entirely predictable. Type 2 is curable, but that one was not the focus of this story.
@nct9483 ай бұрын
what do you suggest?
@lewis-mindscrambler9872 ай бұрын
@nct948 Instead of trying to control your insulin due to sugar intake, you control your sugar intake to remove the need for significant insulin control. I'll cut you off at the pass with the thought that the body needs glucose. Yes, it does, but it doesn't need dietary glucose. The body is capable of forming the limited necessary glucose through gluconeogenesis (google it). So without significant sugar intake, there is no major fluctuation of blood sugar... no more diabetes. You'd counter with type 1, to which I reply that this method could severely reduce dependency on meters and insulin injections. So what do you eat? Depends how strict you want to be, but something low carb or keto or carnivore would all be great examples.
