Alpha Beta Well, even if my life is not boring, I'm single. Lunch is dictated by the large chunk of meat I cooked that week or the week before. It was ham in one form or another. Said ham was on sale around Christmas and thawed 2 weeks ago. I figure I can replace it around Easter at a good price again. BTW, next week is t-bone steaks! YUM!

I hate that this is totally disregarded in courts
@markafacreativesolutions9590
@markafacreativesolutions9590 6 жыл бұрын
It's not totally disregarded. Actually as of today the eye witness has less and less impact in courts, as courts now demand material evidence such as DNA, fingerprints, camera records, rather than eye witnesses to draw a conclusion. Eye witnesses are rather used as a contributor or a last resort if no other evidence has been retrieved and even then, it is not held regarded if there's only one eye witness or it doesn't confirm with multiple eye witnesses. So, you might want to update on that. Cheers!

And there's Crash Course's Patreon that gets $30k a month and supplies far more in depth studies and more graphic illustrations and animations. I know exactly how fragile my memories are. In fact, that's why I don't take pictures on holidays. I had memories of a beautiful winding road looking down on a gorgeous church, and descending from the top all the way down to the front of the church. Then someone showed me pictures. The roadside was rather overgrown, mostly blocking the view of the church, and the church was actually not all that impressive. It was just a dinky little chapel. I'd much rather have my flawed, but great memories than reality.

How will/has this affected the legal system, testifying, and trial by jury?
@UpcycleElectronics
@UpcycleElectronics 7 жыл бұрын
I'm curious about the massive implications this should have when testifying in a legal system. Trials are often delayed by 2-3 years, but any and all inconsistencies in someone's statements are exploited to question the person's integrity and credibility. This data scientifically exposes that methodology as incorrect and ineffective.

I have vivid memories from high school when the Army Department of Casualties called to say that my brother had fallen very ill overseas. In my memory, I was completely alone in the house when the call came. However, my younger sisters distinctly remember being home that day, which makes much more logical sense. I guess that, emotionally, I felt very alone. My brother has no memories of that day because he was in a coma. He didn't wake up until later the next day and is perfectly fine now.

Want a pretty good example of this IRL? In Brazil, most people who watched the news about 9/11 when they were kids often say that the news report came in interrupting an episode of Dragon Ball Z (Supposedly, the one where Freeza dies), however, back then, DBZ hadn't aired on TV yet

All I really remember about when 9/11 happened was that I was in health class, sitting at my desk writing something, a couple of my classmates were joking around and someone came in and told us to turn on the tv on a cart that most of the classrooms that needed to play videos had. We spent the rest of the class watching it. That's about as vivid as the memory gets for me. I think that was while I was in middle school.

@QuantumSeanyGlass
@QuantumSeanyGlass 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's how it works. Your memories all naturally degrade over time no matter what you do to them; in fact, I myself find it more likely that recalling memories often is likely to make it more resistant to change. Of course, the best solution is to start a diary and write down your best memories. Then, you'll never forget them.

My most vivid memories are vivid because there are _any_ details that I am certain of (usually _very_ few). Most details are lost completely. Even exact colours. Gaps are filled in by a crude reversal of a vague pattern-match. I'm probably just more aware of this than most because my mom accused me of having faulty memories once when I was very small, and this deeply bothered me on an existential level.

My most vivid memories are of really mundane tasks... In fact, my memories of traumatic or huge events in my life are largely fuzzy or absent. Also, most of my vivid memories take place in my very young childhood. Then again, I also have dissociative episodes and BPD, so my memory and my brain are probably not average.

My grandmother had far more vivid memories of Pearl Harbor than she did of 9/11, even though she wasn't near either location at the time, even though she wasn't a kid when Pearl Harbor happened, which I would think would make it far more traumatic (you're not only dealing with your own fear and uncertainties, you're also seeing the adults you look to for support dealing with their fears and uncertainties).

some of the memories i have that fall under this definition are from my childhood and they aren't accurate at all lmao there's more that one instance where i was like "ah yes i remember clearly" and my mom was like "...honey, no....." and for some reason many of these are related to injury in some way! the one i can think of right now is the time i was telling my mom the story of how once i was playing in a garden (i was maybe like four) and i touched a plant that made my hands itchy so i just stopped playing with it and moved on to something else. i couldn't explain why i had this vivid memory of such a random moment. well according to my mom what happened was i grabbed these leaves to play with while she wasn't watching and immediately after that she heard me screaming at the top of my lungs and when she found me my hands were all red and swollen and i was crying desperately and we had to leave (we were visiting a friend of hers) and she had to wash my hands so many times before i stopped crying... welp. i don't remember any of that ahahah she got so scared that day ('cos she didn't see at first so she didn't really know what was going on, she just knew i was in pain)... poor mom

I can't recall 80% of the food I ate last week, but i have had some traumatic events involving bullying done to me as far back as grade 2. As an overly sensitive person these memories have been burnt into my brain, I don't remember all the small details for sure, but I trust I remember the big picture. For example I can't recall the age or grade I was in, but I once came downstairs to show my Dad my homework and as he was reading it pointed out all the mistakes instead of reading what the paper was about. Do I remember what the paper was about? No. Do I remember all of what he pointed out? Of course not. Just 2 actually, that the word "Canada" was not written very neatly, and I had a list of things that was in an order that was not pleasing to the ear. But I sure as hell remember how I felt. To say that all past memories are incorrect is an unfair generalization. By the way, I also had a bully for a teacher in grade 2 that I'm pretty sure was a major factor in destroying my confidence for a good chunk of my life.

The researchers certainly are glossing over personality factors and other things that might influence memory. One might also surmise that those who scored very highly on exams, have a more trustworthy memory than those who repeatedly flunked tests or barely passed. If researchers tests subjects were college kids, as they are a prime research subject with most studies being performed on campuses and students close at hand, their memories are more likely to be fried due to the stress of studying and poor diet/sleeping habits or the drugs and drinking at frat parties they attend. Todays touted "science" more accurately would be defined as pop science or pseudo science because they are not fully researched or proven but distorted for hype or shock.

can you make a video about the 2 kinds of thinking system (dual process theory)? and is system 1 thinking when overactive or when system 2 is excessively lazy causes mental illness? and are the 2 kinds of thinking fighting for rewards (system 1 vs system 2)? is system 1 the devil and system 2 the angel?

Waffles, Riblets and Mac n Cheese, Salad with pepperoni and pepperjack cheese with ranch dressing. Lunch is like the only meal I eat.... that varies... Otherwise Tacos for dinner! Also on 9/11 I had just woke up and mom was watching the events on the news, I mentioned the towers could stand up to a 727 plane strike and they would likely not collapse... And they made liars out of me... asshats...

I didn't eat lunch last Tuesday (I had scrambled eggs with cheese, two english muffins with butter and strawberry jam, and bacon for brunch at around 11:30 AM though). I wasn't alive when my paternal grandfather died, I have no idea what I was doing when my maternal grandmother died since my memories before I started Kindergarten are fuzzy, due to an odd family situation, I didn't find out about my paternal grandmother's death until about three years after the fact, my maternal grandfather is still alive, I slept through most of my high school graduation ceremony so remembering that would be difficult and you have to have a first relationship to have a first break up. All that being said, I don't disagree with the video, I just garner an inordinate amount of joy from being able to truthfully disprove what are normally considered generalities.

but you didn't disprove anything, she said "maybe", for one, and you technically didn't experience those events, atleast not how they usually are

Why are we Morbidly Curious?
@Teth47
@Teth47 7 жыл бұрын
The brain seeks novelty and has a negativity bias. Most likely explanation is that morbid events are uncommon and thus novel, and the experience of them could serve to better prepare you for similar hardships, ergo the brain seeks morbid events as a tool for survival.

This is why I claim Brian Williams got a bad rap when he falsely stated it was his helicopter that got shot instead of another in the convoy he was in. He even stated it was another one on camera a day or two after it happened. If he was actually mis-stating the truth for his own benefit then, yeah, he got what was coming to him. But as far as I could tell, he was doing just what this video states and simply misremembered as time went on

Your most vivid memories can also be influenced by being put under a spotlight. If someone tells you that it isn't true, it takes an active contrarian will to suggest otherwise.
