This is for those who are confused about the timeline: I'm sorta late to this but here's what happened. Mitsuha back in 2013, has not died yet. At that time, she does the ritual with the sake where she yells, "In my next life, I wanna be a handsome Tokyo boy". This triggers her to switch bodies with Taki. She keeps switching with him, but at the time, the Taki that she was switching with was in 2016 (3 years after her). Then she died due to the comet. However, before she died (rmbr this is still 2013), she meets Taki, who doesn't know her yet because he doesn't start switching bodies with her until 2016. When Taki does the body switching, he is switching with the Mitsuha of 2013. Therefore, he doesn't remember their interaction with Mitsuha on the train in 2013 (because he only starts switching bodies in 2016). When he travels to Itomori, he learns that she had died 3 years ago. But at that time, he was so in love and intrigued by the Mitsuha of 2013. The reason they were able to switch bodies was due to the bond that was between them. This bond is represented in the items of the sake (caused Mitsuha to switch bodies) and the red yarn thread (keeps their bond alive despite Mitsuha dying). However, when Taki finds out that Mitsuha died, their bond is severed again (because he doesn't rmbr the red yarn was from Mitsuha). This prompts him to search even farther for ways to connect this present him to the past Mitsuha. So he drinks the sake which is a thread between the past and the present. This causes him to go back in time to the Mitsuha before the comet. This also causes the past Mitsuha to be in Taki's body (as he was asleep in he cave). So at this point in the timeline, they are both in the same spot. As twilight/half-light occurred, their worlds blended. This causes them to meet each other. They are returned to their bodies where they meet each other. However, in order to exit the mountain/shrine they must leave behind the most important thing to themselves (this was according to Mitsuha's grandma). At this point, the memories of each other are the most important thing to Taki and Mitsuha. This means that in order for them to leave the mountain, they must forget each other (hence the reason why they tried to write their names down). They have now established a bond and this allows them to change time. The 2016 Taki will go on with his life without remembering why he was on that mountain. The 2013 Mitsuha will go on to save Itomori without remembering who wrote "I Love You" on her hand. And because Mitsuha doesn't die in 2013, she is now able to live on. Their timelines are now matched. Hence the reason why Mitsuha is actually older than Taki when they meet in 2022.

@@hqpfsa So Mitsuha is 3 years older than Taki when they meet at the end of the series. This is because she won't die at 2013. Therefore, she lives on and will be in the same timeline as Taki. So basically, when Mitsuha is in highschool, it is in 2013. At this time, Taki was only in middle school. The reason we thought they were the same age was because the timelines were not the same (she was switching with the Taki in 2016 which is 3 years later). Hence the reason why she already has a job and Taki is fresh outa college looking for a job.

For those who still don't understand ---- Mitsuha performs the ritual in 2013 ( at her shrine ). She wishes to be a handsome Tokyo boy in her next life. So, Mitsuha (from 2013) started switching bodies with Taki (from 2016). Then, one day before the meteor crashes in 2013, Mitsuha visits Tokyo to meet Taki but the year is 2013. She has been changing bodies with Taki from 2016. So, the Taki from 2013 doesn't recognise her. She leaves her ribbon with him and then returns to her town. The next day the meteor crashes, killing her. Fast-forward to 2016, Taki starts switching bodies with the 2013 Mitsuha because this has already happened. 2013 Mitsuha had switched bodies with 2016 Taki. So, in 2016, Taki begins experiencing the body swap. Then one day the body swap stops. That is the day the meter crashed in 2013. Exactly 3 years after, in 2016, Taki stops experiencing the body swap so he sets out to find her and then understands that she died in 2013. So, he goes to that place and finds the kuchikamizake left by Mitsuha in 2013. Do you remember it? It is part of the ritual in the shrine owned by Mitsuha's family. Then, he drinks it and it causes him to swap places with Mitusha from 2013 for the final time. He then tells her that a meteor is going to crash, then they plan everything and evacuate. Then, in 2021, 8 years have passed since the crash. But because they evacuated everyone, no one died and history was changed (originally 400 people had died). So, Mitsuha then lived in the town, grew up and moved to Tokyo where she met Taki again on the staircase. Understood?

I think the other way to end the movie was that they both tell their name at the same time, then both of them had flashbacks of what happened in the past, then back to the present looking at each others teary eyes realizing what they did for each other ohhhh maaan that would have been amazing too. Because I feel like a lot of the viewers including me left hanging at the end, like it feels so awkward for both of them having a relationship not knowing what they had to do from the past to achieve or have that feeling on one another. But overall it was an amazing movie 10/10.

They both start to say "What's your name?" and right when they say "name", their memories start to come back and the whole movie from start to finish starts to flash and then after the flashback, they both start to get tears in their eyes, and then instead of saying their own name, Taki says 'Mitsuha' and Mitsuha says 'Taki'. I watched this for the first time a couple nights ago after seeing an Instagram reel about how they wished they saw it for the first time again. The comments were flooded with similar responses all saying this movie made them feel strange in a way they’ve never felt before. After watching it and then asking for each others name at the end I sat there and just said “Wow.” out loud. During the scene when she reads “I love you” on her hand I almost broke out into tears. This movie was a true work of art and I’m excited to watch it again after I forget it for a while. Truly something you see once in a lifetime. I hope I can meet my person some point in my life and this film gave me a sense of hope.

@@MiyukiiYT they're in different timelines, right? Mitsuhaya and Taki met on top of the mountain but after the twilight they return to their perspective timeline. If mitsuhaya was back in her timeline (2013) she would be alive with Taki in her timeline (the Taki who didn't know she exist by the time) . And on the other hand the Taki we see on the top of the mountain was back in his timeline (2016) where he no longer have mutsuhaya as his counterpart Coz in that timeline mitsuhaya died. So the Taki and mitsuhaya we saw in the ending(stair scene) is the Taki and mitsuhaya of 2013 . So in this timeline we have a saved mitsuhaya while on the other we don't.

2 points: 1. The gap wasn't 12 years, it was 8 from the comet, 5 for Taki. The comet was 2013 as shown in the newspaper, the movie release was in 2016, and 5 years later (as specified in the movie) would be this year - 2021. Yet no masks... 2. The "red string of fate" or "unmei no akai ito" is a very old idea in Eastern mythology, where people are bound to one another by fate to meet.

I just watched it tonight for the first time. Taki waking up in Mitsuha's body on the final day after drinking the sake? Definitely my favorite part. There's something perfect about the moment where you realize everything *could* change. It's not guaranteed, but that glimmer of hope after some really depressing reveals kick starts the race to the end of the film to find out if they get a happy ending. I can't believe I hadn't heard about this movie till today... very sweet, very enjoyable, and you're right: it hits that right notes about longing and connection, not raw physical lust like most films. I'm so burned out on American films where it feels like that is all we ever see. The beauty of stepping into someone else's shoes, (literally!), and absorbing their life from the inside out was quirky fun, but also a wonderful way to see the beauty of who that person is.

I think one of the loopholes in the plot is that Taki/Mitsuha never realises that it's three years in the past/future when initially switching bodies. I'm assuming Mitsuha had a clear shot at knowing because Taki had a smartphone, which has a clock. Even the fact that they wrote diaries for each other. It would contain the date of the given day. That would've easily revealed the time difference.

please bear with me. this is just my humble take and i could be wrong. So please tell me what you think. So basically, from what i understood and gathered, time is like a river flowing from upriver (past) going downriver (present unto the future). In the movie, there are two settings that are blurred within the movie, the year 2013 and the year 2016, in my opinion there is no alternate timeline during this period. THERE IS ONLY ONE BUT ITS OCCURING SIMULTANEOUSLY. The only time there is an alternate timeline created was when Itomori is now saved. Sept 2, 2013 is also simulataneous in Sept 2, 2016. The reason why after Taki’s date on Oct. 3, 2016 they werent able to switch bodies because the Mitsuha in Oct. 4, 2013 already died in the comet’s impact. So at the start of the movie, where we can see Taki waking up in Mitsuha’s body. (I’m guessing that this scene is the first time Taki is inside Mitsuha’s body and not related to the tomato cutting scene, this is also probably the day that “Mitsuha” is having a bedhead day and doesnt know where her desk and locker are located.) 9/2/2013 and 2016 - Their first switch occured but they probably are not aware yet of the switch. 9/3/2013 - (the date is from the blackboard on the right most part, when the teacher is teaching about karetso-doki). The next scene we see is cutting tomatoes and eating breakfast and getting commented by Yotsuha that she had a “weird day yesterday”. So the movie continues as Mitsuha goes to school with Teshi and Sayaka and noted that she was different today and yesterday. During class, she sees in her notebook “ who are you?” written in one of the pages. Later that night, Mitsuha and Yotsuha perfoms a ritual and makes a Kuchikamizake. After this when they go home she screams her desire to become a Tokyo boy in her next life. After this part, we dont really see Taki on what he’s doing in 2016. Moving on. 9/5/2016 - Question: how did we arrive at this date? Because, we can see the date on Taki’s phone and the year 2016 on his classroom door when Mitsuha is in Taki’s body and goes to school. (This is the first time Mitsuha is inside Taki’s body, that she’s aware of probably since they had a switch on 9/2). So, Mitsuha thinks this a dream and casually enjoys her time in Tokyo, eats at a cafe, going to work and meeting Okudera-san. At 11:46 pm, seen at the phone, Mitsuha had already gone home and wrote a note in the cp for the first time that “walked to station with Okudera-san thanks to my feminine powers” and writes on the left palm “MITSUHA” to answer the question on “who are you?” written on her notebook. 9/6/2016 - the following day, we now see Taki now back in his body and finding out what Mitsuha has been doing being him. Also finds the notes that Mitsuha left behind in his phone. He then reports to work at 4:42pm found at the punch in time at the restaurant. He gets questioned by his male co-workers what happened that night before when he(Mitsuha) and okudera-san when home together. So at this point we can see a montage of Taki and Mitsuha what have they been doing whenever they switch bodies. (writing notes, diaries, leaving marks on their bodies) • 9/13/2013 - Mitsuha gets back in her body and sees “Mitsuha? Who are you? What are you?” written on her arm by Taki. Why do we know its September 13? Because its written on the blackboard in Mitsuha’s clasrrom as she enters. She finds out that Taki made a scene yesterday (9/12/2013) in art class against those 3 classmates who keeps gossiping about her and her dad. So lets jump ahead to 10/3/16 where Taki wakes up in his body to find out that he is going on a date with Okudera-san that was arranged by Mitsuha yesterday (10/2/2016). Now, how do we know that this is October 3 and not October 4? As the date was over, Taki checked his phone to find out that Mitsuha left a note dated October 2 which reads “By the time the date is over, the comet will be visible in the sky.” Now wee can see here that Taki is obviously confused because Mitsuha doesnt realized that Taki belongs to the year 2016 and not 2013. While Taki doesnt know what she is talking about. Here’s the part that i find really tricky. I just based this on the things that i observed in the movie and i may be wrong. 10/2/2016 - was the last day that Mitsuha was able to enter Taki’s body. 10/3/2016 - Taki goes on a date with Okudera-san arranged by Mitsuha the day before. Here’s the part that i find really tricky. I just based this on the things that i observed in the movie and i may be wrong. When Mitsuha wakes up in her body, i presume that this is 10/3/2013. Simultaneously switching with Taki. We see here that she wears her uniform and topped it with her brown sleeveless sweater and cries as she was tying her hair with her red thread, she goes to Tokyo to see Taki not knowing that the Taki that has been switching bodies with her is the 2016 Taki and not the 2013 Taki. As we know, she goes to Tokyo, spends the whole day finding Taki and even calling him not realizing that again, its the 2016 Taki she’s been switching with. So as she was about to give up and go home, she accidentally sees 2013 Taki on board a train to which she hops in. As she finally talks to him, “Taki-kun, Taki-kun. Do you remember me?” unfortunately he doesnt recognize her. But as she was getting off the train, he called her asking her name. She answers back “Mitsuha!” and give him her red thread. We presume that after what happened, when she got home, that the part where she asks her Oba-chan to cut her hair. Why do i say this? Cos on 10/4/2013, on the day of the festival and on the day of the comet’s perigree, she already has a short hair. It cant be 10/3 since its not the day the comet is closest to earth and 2nd is that she spent the entire 10/3 going to Tokyo and looked for Taki. So moving on, Taki tried calling Mitsuha and with this we can safely say that Taki also doesnt realize that he was switching with 2013 Mitsuha before she died. He then realizes that he cant switch with Mitsuha anymore a few days later. We can presume that this does not happen on a “every other day” basis because if you look at the notes left behind by Taki for Mitsuha at the 31:12 mark, you can see a broken partern with the notes left behind by Mitsuha for Taki, so these are the dates that they switched bodies: Sept 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16, 19, 20, 24, 29 and Oct 2. After not switching anymore, taki becomes anxious as to why this is happening. So he investigates. He is accompanied by Okudera and his classmate on his journey. By this part of the movie, i see no problems or plot holes. When unto the part where Taki drinks the Kuchikamizake that he made and put it there back in 2013, he gets the see the life of Mitsuha up to her death by the comet. As he was granted the be switched again with her, he wakes up on the morning of 10/4/13 on the day of the festival and comet’s perigree. We can refer this to 2 paragraphs before that she cut her hair on 10/3/13 after she went to Tokyo and as said by her Yotsuha at 1:10:30 that she went to Tokyo YESTERDAY (10/3/2013). As we see in the movie, he tries to warn the town about the impending doom but not before meeting with Mitsuha, now inside Taki’s body on top of the crater. For me this was the 1st of 3 emotional parts of the movie for me which the second one is when she falls on the road and sees the words “I LOVE YOU” written on her left palm and the 3rd one at the end at the stairs. After this, we see Taki giving back the red thread tied around his wrist. Now, the part i dont get is why would they forget each other’s names when they have been doing it for a month? I wanna guess because he gave back the red thread? That’s just my best guess. But anyway, Taki ended up forgetting her name just like a vivd dream that when we wake up, no matter how well we know the person in our dream, sadly we immediately forget it the moment we open our eyes. The movie then focuses on the 2013 events where a “new flow” of time is starting to form and alters the “main flow” of time and events. We see that the townspeople were able to survive the comet’s impact. 2013 Taki was able to witness the comet on the roof top. We then get fast-tracked to 5 years have passed for Taki and 8 years for Mitsuha so that's the year 2021, where Taki couldnt remember a thing that happened 5 years ago, with both of them looking for something. Taki says “I’M ALWAYS SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING. THIS FEELING HAS POSSESSED ME FOR SOME TIME. I’M NOT SURE IF IM SEARCHING FOR A PERSON OR A PLACE. WHAT HAD CAUGHT MY INTEREST SO MUCH IS NOW A MYSTERY TO ME, I DIDNT EVEN KNOW ANYBODY FROM THAT TOWN.” And on that day 10/4/2021, after meeting with Okudera and reminiscing, (what a coincidence) Taki went to a cafe, overheard Teshi and Sayaka talking and as he was about to go home, he and Mitsuha passed by each other on the pedestrian walkway. Time passed by, i don't know for how long, in those moment that Fate looks down from the heavens and shine upon you, the music plays and they see each other when their trains parallel, ran and finds each other, “I WAS ALWAYS SEARCHING...SEARCHING...FOR SOMEONE!” Upon seeing each other, awkwardness takes over but love eventually prevails. The movie ends by starting with “YOUR NAME IS?” To end my humble analysis on this movie, it gives us and insight that love knows no bounds. The movie is well written and the music and colors adds to the beauty of the movie. Despite the open ending, which i dont usually like, it still fits the movie. I just wished that we couldve seen at least they really ended up with each other or at least we see a marriage ceremony.
