I definitely fall into both the mastery-achievement & immersion-creativity areas when I enjoy a game. I love a good challenge but also enjoy exploring everything for items & secrets while getting all the achievements for the game. It's why I play games like Bloodborne, Resident Evil games, Kingdom Hearts, Sherlock Holmes Chapter One, Legend of Zelda games, Outlast, Persona games, Shadow of Colossus, & Final Fantasy games as I like to immerse myself in the world of the game but I need that nice lvl challenge & investment in the characters to keep me motivated to keep playing. It's why I fall off playing sandbox games like Minecraft because unless I play with a friend I just end up bored since they're nothing to really challenging me nor characters to get attached too

When playing those types of games I just ask other players to give me quests basically. I like having objectives and goals too much for just free-form game play. I'd rather go grind for iron in minecraft for a few hours than try to build anything that isn't a castle every single time.

described me perfectly, love videogames like elden ring, dark souls, lies of p, hollow knight, devil my cry, usually hack and slash-souls. games with plenty of challenges and secret item and areas to discover, also I love games that are deeply involved with story but also have a good gameplay, thats why i like assassins creed, red dead redeptiom 2 but dont like those anime-story telling games wich you do nothing excepts walk and talk. I rather play terror games like outlast, layers of fear and observer and evil resident evil that are games that explores surrealism and invests in good atmosphere and plenty variaty of enemies and guns. When it comes to minecraft i fell the same felling, unless im playing with my friends and with interesing mods i dont feel stuck to it

Daryl! This was my first time watching a video from you and I LOVED it. Thank you for your time and effort putting this together. Despite being two years old, it remains incredibly helpful for me to learn more about myself. It helped me understand why I gravitate towards certain games, and less so to others. Like you said, this has been "delicious food for thought," and I love that. With that being said, I would like to share a little about my personal findings after watching. For reference, I'm 26M. - I am high in openness (Fantasy/Story & Design/Discovery). I do enjoy open worlds with the ability to create and customize. I equally enjoy heavy story based titles where I can immerse myself in different worlds and connect myself to the characters within them. Minecraft/Valheim/World of Warcraft & The Last of Us/Jak and Daxter/Rachet and Clank/Stardew Valley/Ori and the Blind Forest to name a handful. (In my personal life, I enjoy change and will reorganize my room with the seasons typically) - I am high in conscientiousness (Mastery/Achievement). I see this category representing me most in the way I love to collect ALL collectables in games and go for all achievements in my favorite titles. I love all the Tomb Raider titles. Those games are a great example of titles that itch my desire for heavy story based titles, while also giving me tons of collectables and hidden items to search for. Additionally, those games have pretty decent customization, fulfilling yet another itch for creativity/design. The devs really captured a wide audience there. I also see myself in this category for the strategizing/planning aspect, with games like Age of Empires 2 and Bloons Tower Defense. I grew up with AoE2, so I see how I have a little bias in that direction as you mentioned, but still worth noting that I enjoy strategy games on occasion. - I am about 50% extraverted. I've taken multiple personality tests and know myself well in this regard. I do enjoy competitive shooters like CSGO/Valorant/CoD/Battlefield, but can only deal with them in small doses and usually only play them when I'm partied up with people I know, though not ALWAYS. There is probably much more that I could extract from this about myself, but these were the main points I was able to note about myself just from the first watch. Thank you again for your time

I think the best personality system to correlate with videogames is Attitudinal Psyche or Psychosophy (two systems that describe the same through slightly different perspectives). The reason for this is that these systems describe attitudes, motivations, strengths and weaknesses in different aspects of personality. For example, my type is VFLE, which means Volition in first position (which basically means confident and stubborn desicion-making and control of will, Volition being the attitude towards desicions, planning and control of self and others), Physics in second position (basically means flexible, positive and open attitude towards the physical environment, physical experiences and manipulating this concepts), Logic in third position (basically means negative, distrustful and obsessed tendency towards logic, argumentation and knowledge), and lastly Emotion in fourth position (basically means indifferent, but flexible attitude towards processing emotions, socially communicating and empathy). Considering all this attitudes, it's 100% understandable why Hitman is my favourite game, as it's a game that encourages Physical and Emotional flexibility to understand how to manipulate the environment (2F) and social connections (4E) to eleminate your target, while it rewards my tendency to planning controlled desicions (1V) and always needing to gather more information and forcing the logic of the game (3L).

I took the test and I got over 80% in both fantasy and story, and I loved what you said about the immersion-creativity type being more open because that’s exactly how I feel. I love games with stories but I also love to try new things like I’ve just started watching anime and I’m thinking of trying maybe a Pokémon game one day (although I got a LONG list of games to play first). The only games I really don’t like are ones where I have to do a ton of unnecessary tasks against my free will or I have to do a ton of strategy and not my own thing. What an inspiring video. I love that idea of what one plays and how reflects one's personality. To go even deeper, how one plays the same game differently goes into this as well: 1. One can be a builder in The Sims or playing a legacy challenge for example. 2. One can be a collector in Pokémon, building that illusive livingdex, or one can battle in competitions. 3. One can be a completionist in games like Skyrim, or one can be a pacifist, who only starts and finishes games according to their build. About the age influencing gaming, I have read somewhere that older gamers who have been gaming since a younger age tend to go for more slow-paced games. There was a game where one's purpose was to follow a story on an island up a lighthouse. The narrator had a beautiful Brittish accent and was an older male. That was what seemingly all there was to it to that game, yet it delivered a unique experience. I don't remember the game's name though.

As a psychologist/ therapist and gamer, I really love this video. Very nuanced, Big 5 mention (love it), and I wasnt aware of the gamer motivation questionare. What a guy that dr Yee! I can see Extraversion/ Introversion, openness and contietiousness as factors in what types of games people gravitate to. As I kid I olayed more genres that I do now. Dont have a lot of time now as well. Love Zelda BotW and TotK, but the exploring takes so much time. Really fell in love with the more linear Story driven games like God of war and the recent FF16. Story is my main motivation and mastery as a good second place.

For instance, why do some players play agro/balanced/turtle in strategy games? Or tactics vs theory in chess? Why do I knowingly main unviable characters in ssbm like ganondorf whereas my friend just plays the best character fox? Why is there a stereotype that girls only play support role in moba? What dictates a players preference to tank, dps, mage, ranged/melee? What compels my friend to build a treehouse in minecraft whereas my other friend is content with a dirt hole?

I'm an avid chess player so I've been trying to figure out the types of playstyles, although I feel like they would apply to a lot of games: Tactical vs Positional: Do you prefer intense calculations or relying more on intuition? Calm vs Chaotic: Do you prefer to play calmly and focus on your own plans, or provocatively with the intent of tricking your opponent? That's about all I've come up with so far.
