I recently sat in at a grappling seminar Joel put on here in south Florida, what a grappling legend!! as a young 90’s sano kid Joel was god. In maturity he is the gate keeper for surfing past, carrying the torch for Donald, phill, skip, Herbie, grubby, Hobie, etc. thank you hombre! 🔥🔥

I could watch 100 more Joel episodes and never run out of material and history to hear from Joel. Such a fucking legend. And it is so true when you meet him he is so friendly and welcoming to people that look up to him even if he doesn’t know you

Love this. Nice work Unkos. I was around during the time Joel talked about on the North Shore. Watched him catch some crazy ones on his single fin long board/gun at Pipe. All the boys loved him, and he fit right in. Those were the days.

I brought a bladed out Ryan Lovelace to try out for the first time, no clue about hulls. Joel paddled by and looked at me and cackled “wrong board hahaha” It was the first time I realized I shouldn’t look up to anyone. Not that they’re lame but it was a kind way of showing me we’re all the same. I also really enjoy riding hulls so thanks Joel!

I met Joel at a fun seminar in NJ and he was genuinely the nicest, most patient dude. He spent several hours just talking shit and hearing questions. Humble and knowledgeable. Great dude, better surfer.

He & I were a handful of teenage long boarders in North county s.d. in the early nineties, thanks for the interview John. Also moved to Hawai'i around '96, it was for sure way different then especially outer islands. I can verify the stories he's saying are very true. Shred on brothers.🤙🤙

I’ve been in the water with Joel around 10 times. He was always respectful and never has burned me. He did discipline, my buddy who’s a pastor. I’m glad he did because he needs to be discipline in the water. He’s a wonderful human, but is also a kook in the lineup.

Me too. Hes insane to see in the water and on the shore. People dont generally realize how difficult it is to ride the boards he rides. Heavy and unforgiving

you should be pulling 10, 15, 30 sec clips from this interview. It's a gold mine of short form content, most people wont sit and watch an hour forty of an interview.

1:03 Wait! But… Herbie did his share of nose-dodging too didn’t he? And he was super rad! I guess we can set him aside from that “hard to watch” group because of all of his other achievements and contributions to the culture.
