The red and green edges on letters are just the sub-pixel font rendering. This is 100% normal and expected for low-resolution screens, it's an intentional feature. It makes text look a little bit smoother. You can turn off sub-pixel rendering in Linux if it bothers you. The colored fringes will go away, but your text will look a bit blockier.

I'm fortunate enough to have both an original LCD Steam Deck and now the new LE OLED model. I decided to buy the OLED model so that I could have the original docked downstairs in our family room and still have the new OLED model as the more portable option. After having the OLED for a little over a week now, the screen, (which was initially a "Wow" factor) when comparing the two, has since kind of faded as being the new Deck's biggest feature. The OLED screen is a really nice improvement but the LCD screen isn't, to me at least, as bad of a screen as some make it out to be. Especially since the latest update which added color correction options for both. The biggest improvement to me is by far the battery life. Not only is the battery life drastically improved over the original, but since it's mostly the same system internally, all of the little tricks that I was using to try to get the most out of the LCD model's battery also work for the OLED. Getting that extra hour or two of battery life, even on the most demanding games, is a huge boon to me. It was also the main reason why I decided to get a second Steam Deck instead of a more powerful but more power-hungry Windows based handheld. If I hadn't already had a use for a second handheld device in mind, I probably would not have purchased the OLED model, and instead waited for something a bit more powerful. As a side note: I do think Valve rushed the 3.5 build out sooner than they should have. I'm experiencing more menu lag, occasional freezing, and just a general less responsive feeling with both the new and the older deck than what I remember having before that update.

I don't know what the specific cause of it is but that is a symptom I've noticed.

My Deck OLED arrived today and I cannot believe how amazing it is! For me personally, it actually ‘feels’ like a full-blown Steam Deck 2. The OLED/HDR screen is simply jaw-dropping, particularly in games that properly take advantage of it. I know the OLED model isn’t really supposed to offer better performance over the LCD model either, but it definitely feels like it is. I tried out Spider-Man on the ‘Very High’ graphics preset, and it’s actually very smooth, whilst I remember it having significant stutter on the LCD model. (A while back at least)

@@bodabodaguy3193 I’ve tested out Spider-Man Remastered on the ‘Very High’ preset with HDR enabled. You get between 30-45FPS on average with these settings, but it feels silky smooth. The colours look so realistic, with the big lit-up advertising boards in the city really popping with the bright lights. The Resident Evil 4 remake is another one I’ve tested, with the ‘Prioritise Graphics’ preset and HDR enabled, and FSR off. This game seems much darker on the OLED screen, with real black blacks, but bright lights, such as flames really pop and standout, creating a stunning atmosphere with very rich colours. Again, performance seems much smoother than on the LCD model, particularly noticeable when using scoped weapons, which really seemed to struggle on the LCD model. The higher screen refresh rate and faster RAM seems to be making a real difference. I want to try Ori and the Will of the Wisps next, because I’ve heard great things about that on the OLED too!

I'd be willing to bet the red and green text halos you mentioned are because oled screens use nonstandard sub-pixel layouts. WOLED specifically has a RWBG sub-pixel layout and will have the red and green text fringing.

Probably not in any meaningful way because you need a fast enough interface between the Deck and the eGPU to make it worth it.
