It's nice to see somebody chat about this in a balanced way. (Speaking as a current med student) I wonder if a lot of the negativity comes from a bit of jealousy... to me it seems like a great deal. More generalised hospital experience, pay (!), no fees, I wish that could be me tbh

It's difficult because I feel frustrated that suddenly it's possible to become a doctor without getting into £100K of debt (+ interest) so I understand the negativity 100% and think there's still lots of questions to be answered but i totally agree if i was looking at applying for medicine now this would seem like a sweet deal

@@LydiaMartinMedic As a side thought, there seems to be a lot of negativity towards PA’s Physician Associates? Might be interesting to discuss too? 😊

Lydia, this was an excellent and balanced presentation. Thank you. I work at a university in the degree apprenticeship team. We are not currently a pilot location offering the medical doctor degree apprenticeship, and I don't know if our medical school will be considering it. However, I will promote your video to school and sixth-form college students who want to know more about this route.

I wonder about those side jobs whether it changes depending on background qualifications? E.g. if you already have a degree in the sciences or something similar working in Pathology. I just say that because I worked in pathology with an undergraduate degree in biology, and a masters in biosystematics. As not registered I could only go up to band 5 with that trust but in most maximum of band 3. It seems lower band pathology is in demand, I've only just stopped getting calls from recruiters. A lot of non-registered those with biology and biomedical degrees still want to do medicine so have laboratory skills that could be used.

Thats interesting - it would defo make sense to assign apprentices to jobs based on their skillset...especially if like you say pathology jobs are in demand. I also wonder if there would be a preference to those already working in the trust/within the NHS rather than grads coming from completely different careers and school leavers? It's hard to know how they will pick out 20 from potentially ?1000s of applicants

I agree with the grade situation as well you make an excellent point. Also widening participation ie Southampton BM6 for A level students is BBB yes they do an extra year but it could be argued that the people moving into the apprenticeship have worked ie in a lawyers office or been a tutor or worked as an accountant therefore would have the skills they learn in Bm6 also many people have become great doctors having done badly at A levels (bad in terms of not AAA) but did a degree in a science field and then went to medicine and got firsts so to say those with ABB will be challenged comparatively is nonsense

Would you want the apprenticeship qualified doctors to not be able to work abroad? Would you want the qualification to identify that the applicant is coming through a qualification route?? Have you looked at the course content?? Cause it’s literally the same as standard medicine
@LydiaMartinMedic9 ай бұрын
hey! I was discussing the fact that some people (comments online as well as when discussing with other students) are under the impression that you won’t be able to work abroad with the apprenticeship but looking at the course information it’s seems like this wouldn’t be the case so that’s great news for anyone considering the apprenticeship :)

@@LydiaMartinMedic I’m sorry the question was not meant specifically for you… there seems to be a general trend of real resentment towards the apprenticeship mostly from doctors themselves calling the whole thing “Poundland doctors” …”pretend doctors”etc etc … go to any comment section of social media post about it

My understanding is they are introducing this to help with the NHS shortage. Take admin duties etc. off health professionals and onto those studying

If you check Anglia Ruskin University website they have listed it under apprenticeships but you can currently view the information as applications are currently closed. According to their website the first medical apprenticeship course has started

Hi Lydia! My daughter is currently a 1st year medical student. From my understanding, the catch is that once qualified you have to commit so many years to NHS? Possibly retaining those new doctors going abroad etc?
@LydiaMartinMedic Жыл бұрын
This seems to be something lots are saying because one reason the apprenticeship is being introduced is to solve the Dr retention problem but so far I haven't seen/read anything that confirms this "x amount of year of service" clause...maybe that will be revealed later though? 🤔

In terms of grades in a level what would you need to get? Also what subjects would allow you on to this like bio and chemistry yes but how about other subjects like psychology and applied science?

Wondering why it’s being established though? Why not just increase places for medical school students? Also I would be so upset being so much in debt and not only do they get no debt, they also get paid? Seems a little unfair… rather decrease uni prices for students 😂
@LydiaMartinMedic Жыл бұрын
Yep exactly! they’ve created a few new medical schools in the last few years, why not see how that pans out /make more medical school places before introducing a whole new system ? Hard to understand what the reasoning is. Don’t get me started on the fees 😂
