By listening to yourgreat videos, I'm generally able to avoid plants that suck. So, currently I don't have most of these. And, being a ruthless sort pf person, I have been known to toss bad plants. Literally, they get thrown off my balcony into the mass of carniverous blackberries that grow down my hilly backyard.

No one can accuse Mr. Sheffield of not being able to draft a catchy video title! It’s taken some experimentation to figure out which plant types I can grow in my environment and which just don’t do well. I gave away the ones that sucked to better homes and now my plant collection is awesome, thanks to Mr. Sheffield’s video tips.

ohh, thrips are the worst... Spread from a new pothos to all the others. I never treated any bugs before, usually just rinsing them off or applying water-soap-solution (which your treatment basically is i htinkg)was enough, but the thrips were not bothered and invaded 40 plants in the end, so I had to by specific treatment. I used Neudorff, i think its called Bugfree in the UK and alvailable on amazon uk. This was the only treatment that worked. Not even removing all soil cleaning the whole plant and the roots plus dunking them in soapy water helped. Thrips still thrived. I dont know if you can tell, but it was really...traumatizing hhh

Wow. Every video I have ever watched on plants has somehow targeted Calathea Zebrina as fussy and difficult..my first plant was the Zebrina! Yes...she is a diva but she was my first so I got used to her needs and troubles. All my other plants were either almost the same or easier to take care of! I probably lucked out buying her first! But there are always other troubles with the easiest plants! I hate that!! Haha I love your videos!! Humor and info at the same time...just what I need when I deal with my plant babies!! Thanks so much!! ❤

I heard Provanto is great against thrips. If the infestation is not too bad, you can use neem oil. I've had success with neem oil but it needs regular spraying to keep them from coming back and also because they will be in different stages of development. Also don't forget to spray the stems and the soil. One other tip is to remove the top of the soil, where the babies would be. And if possible, isolate the plant as thrips can fly short flights from one to the other.

OK downloaded the TRBLShooting Handbook (def. will be handy), signed up for class. Already some really neat items. I'm about halfway and I know I'll go back again and again! Oh yeah. Going to make my potting mix like you do. It's been years since I had any house plants. And I've always enjoyed them. Just too much running I guess. But now - I have time to pamper some plants. But I also have "housing" issues with plants. I have a 5th wheel (which is my "office'/guest house.) :-) And me and two fur faces share a itsy bitsy cottage. 8x12 ft. yup, that's right. The 5th wheel rear end facing East with a window all across. Then across back are windows - facing South. there is an "end" window (slide out part) that on one end faces east and the other end faces West. In bedroom a window facing North and another facing South. Window over kitchen cabs faces North - over sink. And next to door is a window facing North. So lots of windows - but not loads of room. I am going to make a "shelf" from one side of the rear window to the other - so I can sit quite a few there. But I just got a small freezer that will keep me from putting shelf all the way across! Just thought of that. My "cottage" has 2 windows facing West - and oh does it get hot on that wall. I actually covered the one window with foam because summer is really HOT this year. And there is a window A/C in other window - but you still have 1/2 of it. During winter I will remove A/C. That is all cottage has. So grow lights for over here! And I am not going to have any cabinets in cottage - just shelves all over the walls, and hanging from rafters will be a fun place to have some plants. I just don't want what floor space I have taken up with cabinets or other pieces of furniture. But, I am bound and determined to have my plants. It'll be fun to see what I can come up with for the grow lights. I am hoping to close in my deck on 5th wheel so I'll have a shaded deck but with loads of indirect light to use (is on North side of 5th wheel). I will have to have plants that tolerate heat for my deck. I will be using screen to enclose it (not a winter use deck) well maybe a day here or there. So I will be watching your videos and trying to soak up all the knowledge I can. OK I know I am long winded. I am excited to get going. But will try to slow down - so I get em done right.

Thrips: You forgot to mention that this treatment should be repeated weekly for about 6 weeks. For these critters have about a 45 day life cycle (which can include pupating in the soil) and are only susceptible to treatment as adults. SB Plant Invigorator is as good as anything I suppose but haven’t used it. I know the way it works though. The critters that it is effective against have an exoskeleton with water repellent coat of wax. SB Plant Invigorator contains a surfactant (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate) which by removing this wax and lowering the surface tension of the water it blocks the pores of their exoskeletons through which they breath through and so suffocates them. So the girl in the shop may have known that like aphids and mites, thrips also have exoskeletons, hence her assurance to you. Repeat: Ineffective against thrips’s eggs though! Now here is what we traditionally use: Soft green soap BP or its modern title of Medicinal Soft Soap USP, BP. All this means is that it was made not with Sodium Hydroxide (which causes any dripping soap to increase the soil’s sodium level which is considered bad) but potassium hydroxide which means the soap breaks down into plant food. About 2.5 cc to a litre of water is all that’s needed to be as effective as the proprietary stuff which is itself just expensive watered down detergent. The mixture can be made more effective by adding 10 cc of Oregano oil (O. compactum) or Neem oil or Thymus vulgaris L. (common thyme) or Satureja montana L. (winter savory). All these essential oils been lab tested as ‘repellents’ to thrips and other pests and leave a slight protective residue on the leaves. However, if you use any oils, I suggest you spay them on out-side in-case you (or your visitors) don’t like the smell…! These days I hear of people using washing up liquids etc. but I‘ve never used any detergents due to the toxic residue issues but I suppose they work too. Don’t forget that these critters can hide in the soil too.

Mr. Sheffield! All you need for thrips (and mealies, spider mites, scale, aphids) is a good horticultural soap and time to spray the plants once a week for 6 weeks. In the USA we have the brands Bonide, Safer, Natria, Garden Safe, and I'm sure the UK will have one of them, or similar. If you prefer homemade concoctions, try this one: It's easy to make and super effective. INSECTICIDAL and MITICIDAL spray 4 cups warm water 1 cup isopropyl alcohol 70% 1/2 cup pure Castile Soap (peppermint, tea tree, or a mix of them are ideal) 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide 3% (optional) 1 teaspoon neem oil (optional) Mix in a spray bottle. Saturate leaves and stems, do not rinse. Keep the plants away from strong light while the spray is visible wet on the surface. Repeat weekly for 6 weeks, then monthly as a preventative.

Hey Sheff!! In my experience Alocasia's drop leaves mostly because of nutrient deficiency. Most people don't realize these plants LOVE fertilizer. In the past I gave my Bambino a 24-8-16 fertilizer every 1-2 weeks and it never showed signs of burn. it just grew like crazy. I think the Alocasia uses a lot of energy when making a new leaf, so if it feels it doesn't have enough, it kills a leaf to save energy. Just a thought though!
