The noise lasts about 20-30 seconds for the initial disc read, and then it goes quiet again and may occasionally do it during play, but not so much that you would notice it. Quiet machine, for the most part, is not as quiet as the series x but a darn bit quiter than the PS4 jet engine.

It makes less noise than it used to. Mine used to rev up the disc drive occasionally when playing games, but now the only time the disc spins is when starting the game.

I got a Series X yesterday and I have to give props to Xbox, such a great piece of engineering and architecture. They just have to change the UI a bit, invest in exclusives, and it could be an actual competitor. Although, the PS5 is much more easier to navigate for beginners.

It's important to note this is ONLY during the boot up sequence or when a game is inserted. Otherwise it runs fairly quiet. I havent checked to see what fan mine has yet, but the only time I can even hear it running is on boot up. Other than that, I am hard pressed to hear it at all. Even in intensive games, the fan makes minimal noise as it ramps up. At least this has been my overall experience and I am a Day 1 owner. My brother's is silent beyond boot up as well.

Guys if u you're hearing a loud noise when you're booting up a game and it stops after awhile thats the DISC DRIVE not the fan. Its normal but if your fan is making a loud noise then there's something wrong with your unit.

Also good to mention, if you have a disc inside your ps5 then the disc drive will spin the disc when you turn on the console. The disc drive makes much louder noise than any of these fans. If you don't want any noise on start up, then just eject the disc and put it back in the box, when you are done gaming.

@@upfor Yeah, the fan is not that loud and the difference between all 3 is not that high I guess it is about 2db plus minus. Also, he recorded the fan noise with a mic so close to the fan then amplified it so we can hear the difference in noise between the 3. Nobody tested and published any good performance test of all these 3 fans. All 3 should be tested at the same speed(rpm) measure the noise and also test the temperature. That way we can tell whether the loudest is better or worse and which is the most effective. TL;DR The loudest might or might not give us lower temps. Therefore we need to test all 3 fans and temp.

The buzzing is not the fan but coil whine of the power supply. You can tell because the buzzing will suddenly stop or start based on what is on screen at any given second of gameplay. This is because the amount of voltage being supplied is changing based on what is required at any given moment, and since the power supply in the PS5 doesn't have proper dampening, its components vibrate at high voltages creating that buzzing sound.

Not much difference to the human ear in fan noise between the three fans unless you're using a sound measurement tool. I have the one that is also so say rated the best but yet it sounds just like my two nephews PS5 who have a different fan as well. Its mainly the disc drive that makes the noise and the voltage spikes the fan is whisper quiet unlike my ps4 Pro haha

@@SSNebula This isn't true tho. Human ears are much sensitive for some sounds frequency than for others. Bassy sounds are much smoother than high pitched coil whine. And all ps5 have that problem more or less. On the other hand i can put my ear on my xbox series x and hear nothing, just the blowing wind. I really do not get how sony are not capable of doing less noisy consoles... Ps3 was louder than xbox 360, ps4 was way louder than xbox one, and now ps5 are louder than xbox series x. I really doesen't understand why sony don't take that problem seriously...

The buzzing isn’t coming from the fan. It’s due to coil whine because of a cheaply made non-insulated power supply unit. You can tell 100% if you unplug the fan. It seems to mostly be triggered by PS5 games or PS4 games that were graphically enhanced for the PS5. You can hear the source of the buzzing even without unplugging the fan just by putting your ear next to the HDMI and power cord port area. TronicsFix did a video showing the coil whine largely seems to stem from two cheap capacitors that Sony also used in the PS4 Pro. He replaced them and insulated that area of the power supply with silicone and definitely reduced the noise some.

People may also be hearing coil whine which could be mistaken for fan noise. Coil whine isn't really a problem or particularly fixable for the average person. An easy way to test would be to open up a game that runs with a high framerate and look around the screen. If you hear fluctuations in noise when you aim around while the TV is muted, then it's coil whine.

@@ilcriminalo1470 That happens because of when playing at high frame rate the power source demands more electricity and then the capacitors vibrate at a higher pace… they crash each other and then this curious sound happens. It’s basically vibrations produced by tiny pieces colliding each other, haha. It’s advisable to be prepared for this sound to be present the more complex the graphics become. However, there are cases in which the coil whine just goes away with time (maybe due to wearing¿?) Cheers!

@@ryanchristensen1799 It’s a combination of higher powered components and the type of capacitors and shielding the PS5 power supply uses. A similar issue did prop up with many PS4 Pro units, but manufacturing variances can reduce or increase noise differently for each unit. Hopefully we’ll see some revisions from Sony in future models - and it’s possible that affected units today will quiet down over time. It’s not harmful in any way to the systems but it can be annoying for loud cases of whine.

I’ve had my PS5 since June and thankfully no issues with the console,I love it but 2 of my 3 controllers have become unusable due to stick drift in both analog’s,it’s a disgrace in this day and age that this still happens and all the hoops we have to jump through to get new controllers off Sony is disgusting,i genuinely believe it’s a big money racket the only game’s on My PS5 I can use a PS4 controller on is RDR2 and GTA5 every other game I have are PS5 or PS5 upgraded meaning I can only use one of my 3 PS5 controllers at the moment sorry for the rant but I’m just so pissed at the moment how a billion dollar company can get away with this stuff

When you buy a product you have guarantee, what i do is change the controller before the guarantee ends so i get a brand new one for free. I have done this for a year now with my ps4 controller, just got my ps5 this week so have not had the need to change it

Mines is the middle fan I’m sure. It’s not overly loud but it’s a bit unusual I think that owners are treated to better or worse acoustics. My Series X runs whisper quiet in comparison, only game I’ve heard the fan really spin with that machine was when playing Cyberpunk for some reason and even then it was just a hum. Still both machines are quiet tho the Xbox S and X models were already quiet in comparison to my Boeing PS4 pro

Yeah I have a ps5 that I got exactly 1 year ago. All my games are digital but I got the last of us 2 (disc) and I wanted to try it. It was loud at the begging whenever I wanted to star the game, but then it would go to normal and it wasn’t loud anymore. However, last time I try Call of duty(disc) but it was super loud. That’s when I decided to look it up on the Sony website and they have institutions there to kinds fix it or if you have a disc stuck in the console. I did the process the same way they did it. But when I try to play again it wasn’t working and now I can’t even put the disc in the console cause it gets stuck. They say that you don’t lose warranty for doing this but my advice for anyone here is that if your facing that type of problems and you don’t have warranty do not try this cause it might happen to you.

With my PS5 I noticed that part of that noise is from the tower vibrating while it’s in the vertical position. If i grab it and hold it still for a minute a lot of the noise disappears..

I dont think its at random which fan you get, its down to the series and when you purchase it. The newer series 11 versions for instance all have different fans and heat sinks compared to the series 10 models. You can find this number on the box, or the console itself

This video adds even more confusion to the situation because it does not address the coil whine sound, a sound so loud here that it covers the fans sound. The less noisy the fan is (NMB) the more coil whine buzzing is gonna be hearable, which is counter-intuitive and will be confused by 99% of the viewers here as fan noise.

​@@Overqualification you ain't wrong, this is a normal behavior for coil whine on any gpu, it's louder when there's more GPU Load, and unlike on ps5's - on desktops it's more forgiving because when there's more gpu load there's also more fan noise, which helps to block the coil whine noise to some extent

Question: My games used to run just fine in terms of sound. If I was playing a heavy game it would start letting some hot air after a while with some noise after a while, but that’s expected But as of yesterday, the instant I play a heavy game (in this case Genshin), it immediately starts letting out hot air and I think coil whine, even though it was just fine before (aka making noise/air after an hour). My smaller games like NASCAR Heat 5 have it perfectly quiet tho, so I’m not entirely sure what the problem is Edit: I think I found the problem. I believe I was just playing heavy games a bit too often. I say that because I would play it everyday for a good amount of time. But it’s been a week since I played, and when I went on Spiderman, the rattling was gone. I’ll just use my Switch if that happens again, and go back when it’s time

It's a common problem. Genshin is very badly optimized on Ps5. Basically it pushes Ps5 hardware to it's limit. You can write to Mihoyo from in-game feedback about this. At least they can easily add graphical setting, which PC version already has. So everyone can tweak personal optimal balance between graphics quality and noise.

I have an issue and need some help. I turned my ps5 on for the first time of the day 4 days ago, and since then I have been getting errors trying to listen to music saying it can’t load with a “⚠️“. Same thing when I try to go to game base, join games, parties, and my friends have no pfp. I can restart my ps5 and it kinda helps but not really, I have to have my friends invite me when I want to play with them bc I can’t join off their invites. My ps5 runs fine and has no performance issues, just this weird thing that started happening a few days ago. Help?

This video helped me mentally cz every time I look through the ps5 fan I see some type of circuit on top of it I thought mine was broken till I saw the ones in the video had the same type of circuit on top the circle thingy

Its not just the Fans its mostly the coil whine sound coming from the power supply, all ps5's have it more or less. Its an annoying sound so play with Headphones if u play ps5 games cause those will be louder

That why it's always better to wait and buy the slim version with more space. Plus I hate the way they look and when you put the console on its side it goes in upside down. It's funny hearing people say it's not that loud and stops after awhile. It shouldn't sound like that at all. But they are defending it.

Thank goodness. I haven’t really paid attention to the fan noise but it sounded like something was going on in there. 😂 I can’t recall if it’s always been loud (on startup and inserting a disk) but then it’s completely silent the rest of the gameplay or if I watch Netflix or something. Put my mind at ease.

Yea ima a bit worried about mine, got the callisto protocol on disc and as soon as i inserted the disc, the noise started, no stuttering just a constant buzzing/humming noise and this is only when the PS5 is horizontal. So i did an experiment sonce the ps5 was recognizing the disc etc.. until it was ready to play. I made the ps5 vertical and it was 75% better with noise, but ive always been told its better to keep the ps5 horizontal bcz of liquid cooling leaking when vertical… anyone confirm that?

According to this video’s title, my PS5 is defective because it rarely makes an audible fan noise. I’ve had my PS5 for almost two years and I’ve probably experienced about five minutes of cumulative fan noise. However, albeit rare as well, I’ve hear the coil buzz a lot more. And only while powering on the console. My series X doesn’t have the coil noise but it’s fan is more audible. Still quiet though. I enjoyed both consoles thus far. I rarely use the X except for MLB the show but can’t stand the user interface. That’s a minor peeve.

is it vertical or horizontal? are you using the stand ? is it adjusted correctly? if it is try placing a rubber mat/mouse pad of some sort and it should help a bit 👍

Hmm, given the general shape of the blades on all 3 of those fans, I'm surprised they don't sound like vacuum cleaners! Actually... maybe the reason it doesn't sound like that is because the intake and exhaust aren't constricted to two little points like they are on vacuum cleaners. But I bet you that as soon as you put these blades inside a typical volute and run them, they will sound like a vacuum fan.

I had all models...nmb and delta are really quite....nidec is loud compered to the two. But most newer ps5 comes with nidec. Its not loud like ps4 pro, but its louder then nmb and delta. Its a shame its a lottery system.

I think it is a little bit unfair that some people get a "better sounding" PS5 than others (I think the "Delta" one is the least noisy among them). All PS5 owners should be *equally treated* and *equally good* PS5!

Its not just different sounds unfortunately, the newer ones now have stuff stripped out of them to save on costs, which i think makes them run a bit hotter, although i dont think this affects it. But original ps5s have better components, eg copper components, bigger heat sink

my ps5 is digital. so it's just quiet. plus it's a launch model. I always wanted to see what a disk one would sound like...btw for anyone reading this, i'm not trying to brag or whatever. this is simply my own opinion. One more thing, i was told that if your fan is making any other sound than the ones on the video then it could be that the blades of the fan is hitting a old sticker. so you might need to remove the sticker if it annoys you. i hope this helped to anyone that is reading this.

Mine is whisper quite during start up. You have to really put your ear close to it in order to hear it. I’ve only heard my fan kick on twice since I’ve had mine. It lasted maybe a minute or so.

Actually there's more then 3 fans there a 18 blade NMB as will as a 23 blade and there's a 23 blade delta and a 17 blade delta I believe
