IDK what those metrics come from. I have a GR86, most cars are like 15-25 grand. I make slightly more money than the average person, and a 700/mo payment seems insane to me. The average car payment is probably that high because rich people have lots of expensive cars or something, but most normal people pay significantly less than that for a car. Note that in Europe, prices are given with the VAT included. The US have equivalent taxes but as they vary from State to State, they got used to announce the price before the taxes. So in France for example, if the price with tax included is 800€, as the VAT is 20% for electronics, this mean that if they announced the price the same way than in the US, it would be 640€.

Inflation is a "rate," more specifically the rate at which goods and services increase in cost annually due to the devaluation of the currency being used. Just because inflation today may be lower than it was previously, it doesn't wipe out the prior increase. It just means the product is not going up in cost as fast as it previously was. Inflation is a one way road. Things only get more expensive. Its why inflation is the #1 country killer. Destroy the currency too fast, and the lower and middle class get destroyed as well.

This *IS* the most expensive console The PS3 came with a disc-drive, built in, that could not only play PS3 games, but also play movies (ESPECIALLY BLU-RAY, which at the time was obscenely expensive to just have a blu-ray player), and other forms of disc-based content. It had compatibility with other consoles like the PSP, it could also play almost any sort of media file, aswell as hold pictures. It also had multiple USB ports and an excellent selection of games that made the cost justifiable, It also came with PS2 backwards compatibility when it was launched. It justified it's price by having a good game selection, but also being the console of "everything". People, Justifiably, complained about it's price too, and I remember that I only got mine when the price had dropped to about 500 due to a sale. Compare this to the PS5 Pro, which does not have a strong game selection, almost 4 years into the generation's lifespan, does not come with a disc drive by default, has an expensive selection of accessories that you might end up needing like the stand (because it cannot stand well enough on it's own), It has poor airflow, and i'm not even sure you can play anything that isn't a game on them. It cannot justify this price. Keep in mind that the Disc Drive and the Stand would put you back another 200 USD at the least. Adjusted for inflation, sure, that makes sense on paper, but our wages and the money we have available has *NOT* adjusted with inflation, and the cost of living has soared way up because of companies doing what Sony is doing, reading the market, and adjusting their prices & services without adjusting their wages to match. This is industry-wide across almost every industry on earth not backed by an aggressive union. Many people just can't afford to just drop the equivalent of a car payment on a console that just is not worth it. It's even more egregiously priced in the UK, where we have to spend a whole 200 USD more because they couldn't be bothered to actually price the thing properly for the UK market, let alone the EU market. This pricing is just another example of a multi-billion dollar company being so out of touch for what living is like for the vast majority of people that they think an obscene price-tag like this is even remotely justifiable. I'm sorry, but there is nothing that you can tell me that would make this seem like a justifyable purchase when I built my PC for £700 when I first got it and could run most games from before 2022 just fine. It's just cheaper to build a PC, then upgrade it later when you have the money, than it is to buy a PS5 Pro, the Stand, the Disc Drive, an extra controller or 2, and that's all before the games which all cost $60-70 nowadays. Agreed, except for the out of touch. I may be wrong but I'd wager Sony, like many, lobby hard to ensure that wages don't go up and don't match the previous value that money held. There's likely some calculations based on people being working poor where they can spend 700 (feels better than saving) and it'll hurt their vacation, lifestyle, retirement, etc but the short term pleasure and fomo win out. Nothing against anyone trying to live. Everything against powerful entities striving to make comfort in (relative) financial security a pipe dream for many.

On top of your good argument, I think the key thing that Linus is forgetting is that the reaction to the "most expensive" PlayStation at the time of launch was probably bigger than what's happening here. Does he not remember the Kaz Hirai "FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS" meme? RIIIIDGE RACER?!?! The amount of inflation between 2020 and 2024 shaved 15% of the tangible dollar value off of the $500 base PS5. I don't like the inflation argument - costs of living increasing is not a justification for Sony getting greedy. If the average disposable income increased by 10%, then we can spend 10% more on our hobbies but when the disposable income increases by 2% while costs of living increase by 10%, people will see their hobbies as luxury and spend less in turn. If Sony outright is aiming "for the whales" and enthusiasts who are willing to pay that much for a console "that targets 60 fps in fidelity mode", they should first and foremost have updated the CPU to actually achieve what they already promised the PS5 would do.

This upgrade is pathetic. It should be a FREE graphical release because the graphics are literally 5% better, along with a host of new, exciting games to go along with it. At bare minimum for a PS6, it should come with a FREE stand, and FREE controllers. $700 + $100 stand + $200 for a good controller + $100 tax. $1,100 at that point. No disc drive, no new games, no deals. Just wait for the PS6; if they don't F that up too.

Like, sure, the PS3 is egregious for modern day standards *but* part of that price was the disk drive - a BluRay drive, which was expensive in 2006 (PS3 was the cheapest BluRay player at the time). Where exactly is the massive price hike coming from? As there's no disk drive or stand, the CPU is identical, the GPU is marginally improved but not enough to warrant a near doubling of the price, and the increase in storage doesn't warrant it either.

The difference is they aren't eating any costs though I know most of you people were kids when it came out or teens who didn't give two shakes, but sony ever since the ps2 has eaten at minimum $100 in each of their consoles, with the ps5 it was $300. Simply put they use the expectation of production getting cheaper the longer they produce them as the tech to do so gets better and therefore can make the same amount for less eventually breaking even and then turning a profit. They aren't doing that here because they literally can't, like Linus said they are basically giving you the exact price you'd pay for the upgrades if you bought them yourself. That's as LOW as they can go because any further and they aren't making any profit and are starting to eat production cost which isn't viable anymore because there isn't any wiggle room in the tech side anymore what you produce will still cost the same 3 years from now as we are stagnating.

Chief among them being le pc master race lied to me for 2 decades about modding the scene is an absolute joke ESPECIALLY now The problem is that consoles can no longer keep their prices down, Sony's online ecosystem is dogshit and always has been just like Nintendo's so they can't offer that(which is insulting considering how bad it is from a PC perspective) and Xbox refuses to tell the companies making exclusives for them to dial back all the graphics bullshit so they can actually make great games as reasonable prices with all the extra time and hardware they'll have available since most of their resources and time won't be consumed by graphics. Build a rig for 800/900 bones, wait some time and get peripherals, you're now set up for 5 years and when that time comes you'll spend 1/3 as much as you did the first time to upgrade(plus no peripherals costs). PC gaming has bridge the gap that made them fringe with the ONLY thing stopping it being Valve is an absolute dogshit company with a stranglehold on the entire industry

That $2000 was never a very regular thing. And all that said, PC players tend to be more enthusiast while console players tend to be more casual. Do you know why you need to be shocked? Because in 2020 an Xbox Series X with 4K bluray player cost $500 and moves a lot of games in 1080 60fps even 120fps, or 4k 30fps and some 4K 60fps. The PS5 launched in 2020 during covid when prices were exploding, yet kept a low 500€ price. The PS5 pro doesn't have that shortage problem and doesn't even come with a disc drive or a stand. In Europe the price will be 950€ (800€ for the console, 120€ for the drive and 30€ for the stand). That's almost double the price. So no Linus, you're wrong. This price is bad, very bad.

The biggest factor is diminishing returns. An extra $300 (because we should be comparing to the $400 model since it's discless), even if appropriately priced based on the cost of modern tech, doesn't give the performance and fidelity most consumers are willing to pay an extra $300 for. For the vast majority of people (who don't fall prey to FOMO), they'd be better off with the base PS5 which gets 90% of the way there (aesthetically) for under 60% of the price. A large reason for the complaints here though is the insane ballooned scale gaming has even had anyway. PS5 games for the most part only look marginally better to the naked eye than PS4 games, save for resolution and framerate. Larger more seamless worlds is largely attributed to SSDs instead of graphics processing... it feels like if we scaled graphics back we'd still get 90% of the experience at significantly reduced hardware requirements and dev time and budgets. “I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to work less and I’m not kidding" applies here too, and I think a lot of people would happily choose getting more 60 fps PS4 games if it made gaming more affordable. I mean the biggest games out are Fortnite and the now 11 years old GTA Online. Tech prices aren't the only thing to have plateau'd.

Few things with PS3 pricing, it was hardware backwards compatible with ps2 games, had discdrive, didn't need stand and had zero pay on online gaming when it launched. It also was really ahead of it's time if compared to pc's at the time(atleast in the hardware and system side) Xbox 360 was also great system{the best controller and price at that time}(I didn't even own PS3 before it had price on online gaming xD)

If you adjust for wage increases relative to the cost of consumer goods (done with numbers I found on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' website), the launch PS3 would be about $728 today. Don't forget that the firmware license has been revocable to a bigger degree (loosing rights to run older firmware as soon as you're technically capable of updating) since the PS4, on the PS3 it was "only" after an update took place, so it's paying even more money for even less rights without at least having the benefit of bringing something actual new with it like doubling as a rather cheap in comparison blu-ray player like the PS3. Just so you know what I mean: PS3 EULA: "your rights to use or access the current version of the System Software will cease upon installation of a newer version of the System Software onto your PS3 system, whether such installation occurs through manual or automatic download by SCE through SCE's online network, or otherwise." PS4/5 EULA: "Your rights to use previous versions of System Software other than the current version of System Software terminates as soon as you can receive or have the most current version of System Software installed on your PS4 system." I think the price is fair, going from ps4 pro to ps5 pro. I was pretty impressed what ps4 pro could pump out in terms of graphics vs it's specs and it served me well (especially once I put SSD in it, huge change). Sony has always used it's OS based on Unix FreeBSD, which is far more optimized than Windows, and is capable to utilize hardware way far more efficiently. It reminds of 3dfx glide optimization and what impressive things it could do without beefy hardware back in the days.. I think it's a good deal if you are going from ps4 era, but definitely not worth it going from ps5 to ps5 pro. And what kind of cars people buy with average payments of $1000 CAD lol?
