The reason gloss varnish is more durable is that it gives a very solid, flat surface - which is also why it's so reflective. The way matt varnish avoids being shiny is that it gives a porous or "rough" surface that breaks up the light more.

Thank you so much for your info about varnishing! This has flumoxed me for quite some time. Revel, I will remember that!

Hello Crissy. Thanks for all the great information. Very impressed by your book shelves and books. Would you consider making a video about your library of resources and interests.

Hi Crissy, Thanks for your FAQ video. I thoroughly enjoyed it, just like your other videos. Just a question concerning brushes: Did you ever thy Raphael brushes? I have heard a lot of good things about the 8404 series, but am reluctant to give them a go as they are a little more expensive than the W&N, and those that I have are still in mint shape (nine months since I started painting with them), although I do admit that I treat them to brush soap after every session. Cheers and thanks for your great videos, I really enjoy them a lot!

+Ralph Hummel I've never used them I'm afraid, so I can't speak to their quality. It's hard for me to imagine they could be much BETTER than the series 7's. I think at that level it comes down to tiny differences like the shape and feel of the handle and subtle brush shape differences. So you have to find what fits you best.

I noticed that Tamiya StuG on the table in the background. You should do a review of it!!!

+Davis Jacobs Haha. It's a very, very old model that's been sitting around here for a long time. Jasper just recently pulled it out again since he was considering working on it again.

+Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy Oh, I know that feeling!!! I have close to 50 unfinished model kits. I build them, then never paint them. I kinda dread painting sometimes. I am good at it, but I always feel like something is missing.
@wssmagazine9 жыл бұрын
I haven't built much 1/35th stuff myself. Just a couple kits. Jasper used to do it a lot more, but he was the same - like doing the build and moding work, but ran out of steam when it came to painting and finishing. I prefer figures myself - I am just not that great at painting and weathering armour.

Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy Painting and weathering armor is my strong point. It's the painting figures that I get stuck at.

If you do another QA video, could you please either leave the questions up on the screen for longer or, preferably, read them out before you start answering them? I tend to listen to videos like this while painting, so I missed every 'question' and had to discern it from your answer.. Otherwise, very interesting.

+Ghesthar Sorry about that! I'll try to keep that in mind next time.

Hello Crissy. Thank you very much for all the great information in your videos. I would appreciate if you could answer a question: I followed your advice in using Revell gloss varnish and I had a near miss disaster :( I was trying to varnish a miniature painted with Vallejo Game Inks and that dried for more than 3 days. I thinned the Revell gloss varnish with Revell's "Color Mix" thinner and the mixture (varnish+thinner) dissolved the Vallejo inks!!! The good news is that I realize it after the first stroke of the brush so no major damage was inflicted into the miniature. Did you ever have a similar problem? What do you use to thin the Revell gloss varnish? Thank you very much :)
@wssmagazine7 жыл бұрын
whoa! That's scary. I think inks and glazes are a bit more fragile than normal acrylics, even after they dry, so if you are using a lot of those on a model, you might not want to combine with a thinner or solvent based product (the enamel). There are pretty good acrylic-based varnishes out there now though - I've found better ones since I made that video in fact - so you might want to go with those instead. I'm really liking army painter brush-on matte varnish at the moment.

Hello and thank you for your reply :) Yes, after a test I can confirm that Revell "Color Mix" thinner dissolves Vallejo Game inks when they are dry. However, white spirit does not. So, I found that I can thin Revell gloss varnish with white spirit and put it over miniatures painted with Vallejo Inks safely (very yently). Also yes, there are polyurethane acrylic vanishes (water based) that I want to try and compare with the Revell polyurethane (enamel). Thank you!

I always wondered if that was your coffee mug or just a cup for paint.

Have you painted any 1/300 (6mm) figures?

+peter holland No! Not yet. It's only because I don't have any right now though. I probably will at some point in the future.

Hi, I have a lot of 1/32 scale figures that need painted. Do you paint other people's figures? If you do, can I send you some of mine? Would you paint my 1/32 scale figures?

+Stephen Alexander Hi Stephen, Unfortunately not! I've got more than enough of my own to do. :-)
