I just have an old freezer with some holes in one side for drainage and just a brick under one side so the liquid runs. I don't have any blanketing or trays and this happened by accident as i had nowhere to put the worms from the compost tumbler. I did the hole and brick thing so my compost didn't go rancid at the bottom. I just throw in straw and woodchips to help break down the chooks poo. I also put the chicken crumble in there too. When i need chook manure i just use it worms and all. I have the same in the tumbler. I give the big red scrub worms to the chooks. I throw my green waste into one of those tin garden beds so the chooks can forage and deposit manure which brings worms for them to hunt.

This CAN'T be right. Composting worms dont eat soil. Cardboard, partially aged leaves, manure, coco coir. Shredded paper too.

They actually do consume soi to help them digest the food

Also if we dont cover the food scraps with bedding, they will definitely draw fruit flies. The things I listed above serve as bedding, AND food.

Question: When youre changing the bedding and harvesting castings, the worms are already in the food scraps tray, yes?

I think the worms are in the lower tray where the castings are, when placed into the wheelbarrow you would have to remove the worms. Some worms would be in the top tray where the food but it's not clear, in an ideal world the worms be in the upper level and make it easier to use the castings without losing the worms.

Yes. The worms will move to where the food is in the top tray.

Hi, I don't know if you are still following this video, but I own one of these worm café systems. Ideally, the worms will move to the food tray, but that doesn't happen most of the time. The best way is to just harvest the trays when they are close to being fully composted and bait, sift or pick out the worms and cocoons. ~ Sandra
