Unfortunately, you basically can't hear this record! Don't worry, I'll play just enough of it for you to get the idea. Its the enigmatic, brilliant first album by Yugoslavia's best.
Skye's Stamp: Who am I kidding, there is no way for you to hear this music!

Fun fact, Nirvana's bass player Krist Novoselic is of Croatian origin, his parents moved from Yugoslavia to the USA in the 1950s, in 1980 he studied at the gymnasium in Zadar in the then Yugoslavia, his favorite bands are Zabranjeno Pušenje, Prljavo Kazalište, Azra and others yugoslavian bands. While in Yugoslavia, he picked up an interest in punk rock, and discovered bands such as Sex Pistols and Ramones.

On his youtube channel, PETROVICPETAR, there's a 3-part video, Filigranska Azra, which is a compilation of his songs he apparently considers relevant. So that's a decent way to get into his music. Boris Leiner is one of the most legendary figures in the ex-YU musical skies, and a key member of another fantastic, very particular band, Vjestice.

He also made an compilation for first album, Sunčana Strana Ulice, Ravno Do Dna in one go, it's called Azrino Sunčano Dno and it is consisted of 50 songs lasting around 2 hours and 14 minutes. Really good compilation imo. He also published remastered version of Filingranski Pločnici, Kad Fazani Lete, and Kerivo Srastanje on the same channel last year, absolutely worth a listen.

He now translates works from the classical literature for a publishing house Plato. A Serbian network, who were making a documentary about what became of the biggest ex-Yu star, recently came to Utrecht, hoping to interview him. They stood in front of his house, but he didn’t open the door. Top man.

Second half of '70s and first half of '80s in Yugoslavia were incredible. So much music, so many different bands from all parts of the country. They followed most modern trends of the world, very often they even set trends. It was amazing time to grow up with such music.

Thank you for this video. I was lucky enough to be a teenager during 80's in Yugoslavia. I was blessed enough to be able to visit AZRA's concerts or to simply say - to live in those times and to be growing up with Johnny's music. Unfortunately, I lost all of my vinyls, including AZRA, and their music is nowhere to be find, as you mentioned. And I'm very sad about it.

Cool stuff, have to say. "Azra" is one of our cult bands, easily one of the best along 5-6 other bands. My parents' generation and my generation (90's) grew up on this music and I feel really privileged to be able to experience all of that. The thing with our music, especially Azra's is that other people, foreign people, cannot feel or understand it the way we can. When I say we, I mean ex Yugoslavian people. Because this music bears memories, nostalgia, hits you like a wrecking ball with all of these emotions because you always remember how good it used to be. They use some terms and phrases that are understandable only to us. They can be translated literally but that bears like 1% of its true power in those messages. We don't have anything near as good today, or even in the past 15 years, only some occasional glimpses that we hear in some bands but they fade away in a year or two, unfortunately. All of our greatest bands share same, sad destiny in one way or another as they all came to their ends on a sad or inglorious way. We often used to say that, if they were American or British bands, that they would be shoulder to shoulder with Rolling Stones, AC/DC, etc. And I firmly believe that, as someone who's listened to the best of both worlds. Cheers from Serbia :)

Mister, thank you so much for this amazing video. It was really fun to watch, get the full sound that only vinyl allows, learn some nice curiorisities and get to know someone's point of view towards, perhaps, my all time favorite album. I was lucky to get my virtual hands towards his whole discography (way easier to find than i thought, there's a dailymotion account which i believe is from Johnny), and while i still need to experience it completely, the first 3 albums and the first singles compilation are unbelievable (still need to digest the fourth album). For the last 2/3 weeks I've been pretty much only listening to Azra, and the band has been a really important part of my life for almost a year. There's something in them in which i don't find anywhere, this mix of an acessible sound, dense lyrics with urban descriptions (that at first seem very ordinary and just fun) that grow into social commentary and constant addictive repertoires. My poetry writting got completely turned around with the influence of his fantastic work, so the lyrics are absolutely worth checking out, the translation may be rough, but getting the idea is totally worth it; the visions towards love, social commentary and urban life are amazingly written. And the band's third LP is definitely worth listening, nearly 1 hour and 30 minutes of flawless and diverse music approaching all kinds of genres. Dobar život svima nama!

Thank you for rewieving my favourite album of my favourite band. I played that record to death, expecially when I got it back in 1980. Sadly Johnny doesn't like how that record sounds, let genious to think like that. I have luck to grow up with Azra, and to see them for 5 times, unforgettable expirience. I have to wait more than 25 years to see energy like that from the stage. Band from Philly called Marah put out a great show in Belgrade back in 2006. Cheers from Srem!!!

You might want to know that the origin of the band‘s name is not the common female name Azra. Branimir Džoni Štulić had this poem in mind and the ancient tribe called Azra (wrong spelling in the translation) was the real inspiration for naming his band as he did: Nearby a slender shadervani[1] where water is murmuring every day walked the sultan's dear daughter Every day one young boy used to stay nearby the shadervani as time passed he became more and more pale One day she asked him she, the sultan's dear daughter "Tell me young boy, where are you from from which tribe are you from?" "My name is El Muhammed from the tribe of the old Asra who lose their life for love and die when they love." This translation gives you the impression of the meaning, but it does not convey the feeling of the poem... In one of his later versions of this song Džoni sings: ”Ja se zovem Štulić Džoni iz plemena starih Azra...” It was a real pleasure to watch your video and see someone so interested in music sung in a foreign language and from a unknown country. Your video about Đorđe Balašević was also very moving and so to the point, that there is nothing to be added. Thank you kindly.

OK, I see that you are really getting into this, so let me give you a couple more leads. Azra and Balašević, you already got. Idoli too. So, who else you absolutely have to listen to, if you want to understand that time and that culture? - Bijelo Dugme. Probably the biggest rock band of all times from EX-YU. - Riblja Čorba. A serbian pendant to Azra. Much more profane, much darker, and the songwriter turned out to be a total jerk, but well Bora is still one of three best songwriter we ever had - same league with Đoni Štulić and Đorđe Balašević. - Film and Haustor. Let's say they are Croatian pendants to Idoli and Šarlo Akrobat. You can add Lačni Franz to this collection for a good measure. - Ekaterina velika. The weird kid on a block. - Zabranjeno Pušenje. The most famous band of the "new primitivism". Which is anything but primitive. And this is just a top of the iceberg.

Slobodno = free. Also used to say that you may enter, but not in that song. Now, on a related note, there is a Croatian series called "Crno bijeli svijet", which is also one famous song from the 80es. Here is a first episode: www.dailymotion.com/video/x5shb6h Your wife may not know it - she will probably like it. Now, the story is falsifying the history a bit, but songs are real and it's giving a cultural framework to the songs to a certain level. Just keep in mind that Croatian TV needs to show that Yugoslavia was bad, so don't take it all for granted.

Like "Uzas je moja furka", " Tesko vrijeme" , "Obrati paznju na posljednju stvar", " Odlazak u noc"......The establishment. The "so called normal".The humor is far out at times. The " love songs" are fully charged too. One great poet. "Odlazak u noc" is an amazingly charged long story cut short. I/We grew up dancing to the tunes of Azra. Oh wait, we still dance to the same tunes :)

There's a wealth of information in the lyrics. For me, the closest thing to Štulić universe is the one of Tom Waits. They portray broken people, they sometimes mock, sometimes they praise unfinished job that is human. Štulić, on top of that, is sincerely naive and very straightforward. To me, his greatest work came later and all up to very end his popularity was kinda declining, but the music got better and better. Try Mon Ami or No Comment. There are also English albums. One of those is It ain't like in the movies at all. At that time he had already gone quite off the deep end, but he did a decent job putting his Croatian into English. And, yes, I always knew that you people were missing out, you know, on account of not being able to get that sweet sounds. Another btw: those sellouts of Električni Orgazam, I will send you a link to recent video where they play one of their truly epic songs from before they sold their souls. And you can clearly tell that the band enjoys the music much more than the audience, which finds the psychodelic cacophony just boring.

From Time To Time (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S_Vremena_Na_Vreme ) is another classical, legendary Serbian band. They had a gazillion hits. Not a gazillion songs, but every song they wrote was a big hit. They are generally thought to sound better at live concerts than in studio recordings. It is usually thought that Tema Classica is their best song, and it really is awesome and was ahead of its time and definitely one my own favourite songs of all time: Tema classica kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3iZlphvj66Jgc0 But at parties, people requested mostly a few other songs. By far the most popular was Trazi Mene (Look for me), which is their first song I ever learned to play, one of the first songs I ever learned to play: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKXEi2Ojgsieb68 And then people also often asked for Moj Svet (My World): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGmzo5qgZayEnbM and probably their most widely known song Sunčana strana ulice (Sunny side of the street): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6LGi2SLZ7mJgKM both of which I also learned very early on. And Jana (Yana) was great when there were two or more of us with guitars and could really burn the strings while everyone else is drunk: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaWlqIifitOCarc Also well-liked and sometimes requested: Čudno drvo (Strange tree): kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5rNY4WshNeio9k Dixieband: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn-2kpKnicyii80 Put Putuje Karavan (Caravan on the road): kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6GZdZSBicqHb68 Petak je popodne (Friday afternoon): kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2a4dINupb6VrK8 Odisej (Odysseus): kzbin.info/www/bejne/epDGoqmgi9Sbnc0 But there are a lot more... Lyrics are easy to find online (including translations).

Zvonko Bogdan (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zvonko_Bogdan ) is a beloved singer of old city and folk songs, as well as songs to the lyrics of old Serbian poets. As he owns racing trotters, I met him a few times and he is an amazing, wonderful, humble, generous gentleman. Of course, many of his songs are about horses and include horses, so I had to sing many of them at parties with my barn friends. The one everyone always loved the best is: Već odavno spremam svog mrkova (I've been preparing my brown horse for a long time): kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYeplXanbMucm7M kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqDPcn2OlK1nsLc There are hundreds of other songs he sang and recorded (and I played), here are a few more: Ja Sam Momak Siroma (I am a poor man, I have nobody anywhere, except for my brown horse) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZemhZ6kmNZlopo Fijaker stari (The old horse carriage) kzbin.info/www/bejne/poLakGOgZ7ehkKs A sto ti je mila kceri (Dear daughter, why is your shirt unbuttoned?) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqDcnGuloLRqhNU Te oci tvoje zelene (Those green eyes of yours) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2a5e5WMg7p1qKc Govori se da me varaš (they are saying you're not faithful to me) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p37MdJRprt2ogsk Osam tamburasa s Petrovaradina (Eight tamburitza musicians from the Novi Sad fortress) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKKnq6OfppJ3pqM Ne vredi plakati (not worth crying) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3msfWyoht2WiZY Evo banke cigane moj (here's a coin, my gypsy) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5OummisjLOXnbs

Man, you are right about the thing, it's the best rock album. I would compare it with just anything by Nirvana or Beatles, and Azra perfectly fits in-between the two. Damn, Johnny even accused Kurt Cobain for stealing some if his stuff.

Johny Štulić is genius and band Azra is still today famous, I was thinking some time ago how it is pitty that all their music is not available worldwide, world is missing it. One day in future it will come worldwide :) Poetry from Azra is actually real jewel. You will need to learn serbo-croatian language to translate it.

Azra Ravno do Dna could pretty much be considered the best live album of Ex You Rock. Everything is there. Original line up, the best tunes, small club atmosphere, jagged guitars, great rhythm section, cigarette burned voice of Štulić...etc. it is indeed crazy good. On the other hand albums "Krivo srastanje" and "Kad fazani lete" despite great tunes were destroyed by middle 80s style production, dollops of unnecessary echo, rhythm machine (no Leiner and Hrnjak (original rhythm section)), and Štulić's wish to give Eddie Van Hallen run for his money even though he wasn't that type of guitarist at all.....Check also Majke (first three albums) and these concerts kzbin.info/www/bejne/amTEfqGqismgebM, kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJnLnXqLq7Bnmc0&start_radio=1 God Bless

The name AZRA is not given by the female muslim name but due to the verse in poem of german writer Heinrich Heine "Der Asra", it was translated by our serbian/yugoslavian famous poem writer Alexa Shantich and it goes like this: Azra Kraj tanana šadrvana Gdje žubori voda živa Šetala se svakog dana, Sultanova ćerka mila. Svako veče jedno ropče stajalo kraj šadrvana, Kako vrijeme prolazilo; Sve je bljeđe, bljeđe bilo. Pitala ga jednog dana Sultanova ćerka mila: “Kazuj robe, odakle si, iz plemena kojega si?” “Ja se zovem El Muhamed iz plemena starih Azra Što za ljubav glavu gube I umiru kada ljube.” english translation found on internet: Azra Daily the beautiful daughter Of the sultan walked to and fro In the evening by the fountain Where the plashing white waters flow Daily the young slave boy stood In the evening by the fountain Where the plashing white waters flow; Daily he grew pale and paler On one evening the princess strode Up to him and quickly asked: ‘I would know what name you have, Your home, you family.’ And the slave said: ‘I am called Mahomet; I come from Yemen, And my people are the Asra, Who must die, if they should love.’ There is an old legend that there is an old tribe in Yemen called Azra (virgin). If the young men from that tribe are not allowed or it is not possible to realize their love for their beloved, they go to the desert or to war in order to die in love as soon as possible because they do not want to live without love. This legend made a strong impression on Heinrich Heine and inspired him to write the poem Azra. There is a province of Asir on the Arabian Peninsula, in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, and the name of this province means unattainable. BTW WHO TRACKS HIS PROFILE ON FACEBOOK COULD DOWNLOAD MP3 AUDIO TRACKS OF HIS ORIGINAL ALBUMS, BUT THE LINKS THAT HE POSTED ARE NOW EXPIRED CUZ THEY WERE TIME LIMITED....I MANAGED TO DOWNLOAD 4 HIS ALBUMS. WITH HIS EXTRA SONG JEDNE OD OMILJENIH "VRATA PODZEMNIH VODA".

Hi, professor Skye! I had a first touch with your videos with this one yesterday. I am amazed with your knowledge, insightfulness, heart, enjoyment in music... but also in such a broad view and willingness to listen to good music in other languages...! This video is great and for me as a guy from Zagreb it was a real pleasure and fun and education to see it! Balasevics video also amazing! If you have not alredy heard it, I would like to recommend you an album that is also a great one from the 80s: Treci svijet by Haustor. I would be so glad if you listen to it and give me some feedback on what you think... Keep it going! Toni (madtmatic@yahoo.com)

Krist Novoselic was a big fan of Azra and since Krist has Croatian roots and lived in Croatia for a while, it is no wonder that some of that is heard in the music of Nirvana

Zdravko Čolić (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zdravko_%C4%8Coli%C4%87 ) is a giant of Yugoslav pop music, second only to Balasevic in popularity and universal love by all the peoples of the former Yugoslavia. At his height he could easily, every year, fill up the Red Star soccer stadium (about 100,000 people). My friends and I denied we liked him because we were snobs and wanted to listen to edgy stuff, or artsy or obscure or foreign music, but secretly we all loved his songs and later openly admired him. Even in sad songs, he had so much energy, so much love for life, so much elan. He had so many great songs, it's hard to choose just one. His probably biggest hit was "Ti si mi u krvi" (You are in my blood): original recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5-ln4Wra9Rnqa8 concert decades later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGGun6WBlNx0ibM You caress me with your eyes Pogledom me miluješ It's like you're touching me K'o da me dodiruješ And every time it's like the first I svaki put kao da je prvi I keep thinking, it will stop Ja stalno mislim, prestat će It will just disappear Iz čista mira nestat će But lust does not stop Al' požuda ne prestaje You're in my blood Ti si mi u krvi So many years of Toliko dugih godina Taking, giving Uzimanja, davanja I remaine the last and the first Ostajem poslijednji i prvi I dream of gypsies because of you Zbog tebe sanjam cigane And I make up sweet scams I smišljam slatke prevare But the devil does not give up Al' đavo se ne predaje You're in my blood Ti si mi u krvi If you are taken away by gypsy nomads Ako te odvedu cigani čergari Or you are stolen by terrible harem guards Ili te ukradu strašni haremski čuvari If they take you, I'll go crazy Ako te odvedu, ja ću da poludim Without you, I can't wake up in the morning Bez tebe ne umijem više jutrom da se budim If they take you, everything will fall apart Ako te odvedu, sve će da se sruši Remember me as a friend, keep me in your soul Pamti me k'o prijatelja, čuvaj me u duši And then when you think it's too late for dreams I onda kad misliš da je prekasno za snove For all Za sve His other great songs that I love are: April in Belgrade: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGfaiaJ4ndVrnJo I Called Her Emily: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYGTeIWIZrhkhaM One Winter With Kristina: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pH_TiZJ8oN2Ngrc She sleeps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ3Qe4trfrOFfLc My song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWqaaYZsjJyJbrs That was the last song he sang there in 2007, after he was already called back on stage a few times and already sang for more than three hours. People who were there say that the ending was incredibly powerful with 100.000 people singing along. The lyrics by a beloved poet: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jovan_Jovanovi%C4%87_Zmaj There are gazillions of KZbin videos of his songs, concerts etc.

As a Croatian, I've always felt that Azra was a stylistic copy of Talking Heads and The Police, but with Yugoslavia being closed off to the mainstream music of the west, to our parents' generation it seemed like something radically new and unique. Leiner, though, is a great drummer, I'll give them that.
