Enjoyed this video a lot. I'm a retired commercial seamstress and one thing we always did was to stop 15 min. before day's end, and clean our space, sweep the floor, put everything away, clean and oil the machine, empty the trash, and if you live in a dusty area.... or have cats in your sewing space... take a sheet and cover the whole machine/table area to keep it clean. It was always so refreshing to come to work, with everything clean and ready to go.

What a great idea. This is helpful when you only have 20-30 minutes to sew. I can sometimes run home for lunch and get an amazing amount of piecing done, if everything's ready for me to just sit and sew or press, whatever the next step is.

BUT I have takling it up again after 32 years. I use an address book to list where I have put things that I use less frequently and projects. An example would be that if I am looking for zippers, I would look under “Z” and it might say third shelf North wall”. It works for me!

When I am done for the day, I put on a 10 minute playlist with upbeat music and a driving bassline to tidy my sewing room. Really helps make the space clear and nice when I come back. I always start with "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago.

The pandemic caused me to get organized in a big way. I started drawer by drawer and room by room, all of my fabric is now folded and stored so everything is visible and findable. I organized my WIPs in plastic boxes that are normally used to store scrapbook paper, they are 12x12, so almost all of the blocks fit in them and lay flat, so minimized the wrinkles. I organized the drawers by my sewing space many times before getting a workable solution. I don’t have a work triangle as my sewing space is a very tiny den in a very tiny condo, so I use my kitchen table for cutting and ironing. Being unorganized kept me from doing what I love most and now I can sew when I want without having to move heaven and earth to get started. Your tips and tricks are so practical and doable. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!

Finish with a clear space - helps everything. But so hard to stop 5 minutes before I have to! One idea, get ready for whatever I'm rushing off to next (get dressed, pack purse/meeting materials, find keys) before I start to sew! I don't always do it of course, but it really helps when I do.

I am in the process of reorganizing my quilt/craft space. It worked at first but now my daughter lives with me and so I really wanted a setup where we could quilt or craft together. Essentially 4 stations as mixing quilting and paper, resin and paint is a recipe for disaster. Anyway try as I might it would not all fit. I ended up getting rid of my cutting table. Drastic for sure but I had to decide between both of us in the room or one of us and the table. When I bought it it fit my space beautifully but now it didn’t so it’s gone to a good home. I’m still working on configurations but your ironing station on wheels has made me realize that I can put wheels on my papercraft organizational cubes which I have stacked and which can be bolted together!! That may well be the last piece off the puzzle.

I love the idea of the zones. However, I’ve consciously moved some things a couple of steps away. This is to ensure I get up from the machine frequently. I seize up if I sit too long, it’s bad for my back and knees. Having said that, I have like stored with like. Clear containers in plain sight on shelves. One thing I’ve found very useful is to have a bin beside the cutting station and another beside the sewing station. Clippings of threads and scraps go straight in there. I can then decide if it goes in the rubbish or into stuffing for toys etc. I use apps for cataloguing fabrics and patters. I have a separate container of needles and scissors for hand sewing, so it’s portable. I can do the finishing in any room, in the car, or at break times at work.

This is how I organize too. I keep the essentials like a stitch ripper, snips, and bobbins handy, but thread and other items are stored a few steps away so that I have to get up and go get them. I too need to move around.

You are simply...well, just AWESOME. So incredibly relatable. I sat here with my head nodding thru the entire video. I'm in the midst of reorganizing my DIFFERENT zones: My paper crafts, watercolors, color works, but most importantly, my quilting. I've been quilting since the 80's and even tho one of my best buddies owned a quilt shop, I find you the most (repeating self!) relatable with your explanations. I'm the retired ceramicist 73 year old stalker that loved your pre-covid spiky hair. (I sooo need a haircut!). While we designed, produced, marketed and shipped dinnerware country-wide for over 20 years, we always turned to quilting for the opposite tactile feel of hard clay and soft fabrics. Quilting become our escape and has followed us for a very long time. Thanks so much for all you generously share with us!

The tray for your project is brilliant! My husband's motto has always been "A place for everything and everything in it's place." I joke that my motto is "Everything is someplace!" LOL That said, I do find that when I do go to tidy up, it is so much quicker to do when I actually do have a place for everything so I don't have to figure out where to put it. Another trick/tip I try to use is to tidy up after every project once it's finished. All the unused fabric, patterns, etc. need to be put away and surfaces cleared off. Great video, Karen!!! I've been sewing for many years and have done many "types" of sewing. I've sewn my children's clothing and made many fabric dolls and toys for them. Then there was a season of making dolls, rabbits, and bears for sale in a craft guild. I've also made totes and bags for use and for sale. In between all that, I'd also make quilts. So, the organization of my sewing space has had to change according to the type of sewing I was doing. For instance, making doll clothes requires a lot of different notions: ribbons, buttons, elastic and such. Totes and clothing required all types of interfacing and hardware. Now, my sewing mostly consists of making quilts. I also knit and crochet, which takes up some of the storage space in my small sewing/laundry room. It's a constant juggle to arrange the zones to make them highly functional. You have shared some great ideas in this video and you've inspired me to keep trying for that "magical" configuration that makes all my crafting endeavors play nicely together. LOL! Indeed, it takes a lot of "creativity" to make our "creative" spaces functioning so that we can keep the "creative" juices flowing. Love your ideas and your videos!

I use an over the door Shoe Holder...with clear pockets, to store those 'hard to store items' such as lint rollers, ext. cords, spray starch, glues, mini iron/holder, etc...it makes great use out of the back of my door, and I can see at a glance, what is in there...it has about 16 spots!

My favorite tip is to clean up your area after you are finished. Just as I love to come into a spotless kitchen first thing in the morning, I also love and am more inspired when I come into my sewing area and its all clean and ready to work!

This is the very best video and I do mean a guide to tidy up and place sewing items into sections on how often we used them. I’ve seen many, and learnt bits from them on creativity…but this places EVERYDAY ITEMS, then secondary and tertiary items…thanks so much! All your tips are spot on!! It’s been so fun to set up and RESET UP my small sewing room. I have everything organized in just the ways you described and it is so easy to keep clean and stress free. My favorite thing I’ve bought to help is a cordless stick vacuum. Such a game changer. I am able to quickly clean/organize everything as soon as I’m finished for the day. A quick vacuum and it’s ready for the next day!! Totally my happy place!!

I found this video very helpful. I tend to make my zones a bit wider so I will HAVE to get out of my chair, even a little bit, so I have to move more. If I sit too long in one position I pay for it. So my scissors are handy, but on a shelf that I have to reach for. My rulers are a step away, up and down helps me in the long run. But definitely need this organisation to make my method work too. I wish I could make the triangle in the same room! lol! Right now, my cutting table is the dining room table on risers and my big ironing board is in another bedroom. However, I do have little cutting board & wool mat on my sewing suite table so that’s a plus. Also hang my scissors from a heavy duty jewelry tree on the dresser that holds the TV & stores sheets & some material. Remember entertainment centers? That’s how I store new material in plastic containers. The bigger scraps are rolled around comic book acid free boards and stored under bedside tables in a covered basket. The chest of drawers holds all other sewing & quilting supplies. Rulers are in a couple of racks, one hanging on a wall & the other on top of the entertainment center. I’m ALL IN for this hobby that has taken all my extra money & time. Yes! I’m addicted & I love it!

Fantastic tips. I had an ahh haa moment several months ago when I was watching an organization video by Lorena's Quilts. I grew up in a family where even if there was money available, I had to make do with what I had. In her video Lorena, who does commercial machine embroidery from home as well as LAQ, showed how she had all the tools she needed at each of her embroidery machines, similar to you have thread snips at your sewing machine and your ironing station. It saves so much time looking for an item that is not where you need it, if you buy a second container of machine oil, or another paid of snips, or needle threaders for each sewing or action station.

I'm the opposite - cram everything into one spot. I knew I had to organize better, so I did buy tool boxes and other kits with clear lids to organize better and save space and stackable, so I need to get on that ... I think I will do that today. Lowes had a great organizer red and black with trays ... great for my needles, pins, buttons, and so on. But the tool box needs to hold the cords and all my assorted phone chargers that I did not need to be putting in my drawers with my scissors, lol.

I'm at the beginning of my sewing journey and live in an RV. Watched this for tips, and thank you. I sew at my dinette with an office chair tackle box of tools open on the dinette seat. Snips on the table. Behind me within arm's reach, I'm lucky to have a fairly large breakfast bar counter that's my cutting/ironing area. Once I'm done with anything, I put it all the way away. When done for the day, Ikea table-top ironing board goes in closet. Cutting mat behind sofa. Measuring tools in their place. Tackle box in its cupboard, and sewing machine covered an stowed unseen below dinette. Two minutes tops. Everything goes all the way to its place daily.

I have 3 sewing spaces...2 work and one at home. I always clean up the work stations before I am done...but home is another story. Great tips...realized I am already doing some of these things now to wash, rinse, and repeat all of the video processes for each space.

I have to be organized and de-cluttered in order to be productive in my sewing. I purposely keep my iron across the room so I am forced to get up and move in order to press (and I press every seam!) I could not sew in an unorganized area. And I sew every day!!

So timely! I did this in the early spring and kept it that way for most of the summer. Somehow in the fall I slacked off putting stuff away, and now I have a big mess and can’t find anything. I just finished a project and it’s the perfect time to get organized again. I was procrastinating, thinking about how badly I wanted to start something new. Thanks for the push in the right direction. I’m doing it today. No new shiny objects will get in my way!

I use an address book to list where I have put things that I use less frequently and projects. An example would be that if I am looking for zippers, I would look under “Z” and it might say third shelf North wall”.

I really like how you approach everything in an analytical way so that people can apply your ideas to their own space. I approach my organization in the same way. Re the working triangle, I have a large cutting mat right next to my sewing machine and on top of that sits an ironing mat with a small iron for when I’m piecing so I don’t have to get up to press each little seam. But I do have the larger ironing station for when I need to press larger pieces. It makes piecing go a lot faster.

These are great video's. Watching you zone is the key. Ever since I've sewn/crafted I always had zone spaces. I don't Quilt, but extras tools and alike items used right are in the space where their needed. Before I leave my space I do tidy up, because it is gratifying to walk into a fresh room another day. I had to find a way to control the scraps. I bought plastic bins with covers for the basic colors, labeled the boxes and when the box is full I either have to purge to put more scraps in or I just toss the scraps. I also bought three bins for projects I am working on, it holds all the fabric, pattern and cut pieces. I cannot start a project until one of the bins is empty. Tossing the scraps is hard but it is more stressful having huge bags of scraps when I also have fabric stored for new projects. Thanks for your videos.

Great presentation, as always. The access/storage set up works no matter the size of your space. I have a large triangle (actually a circle, I walk around a table in the centre) which suits as it’s good to walk between the stations to stretch and stay active. In a very small space I suggest spreading out to 3 areas, move to an ironing space & maybe cut at the kitchen bench, everything returns to small room but you increase steps while working. The only time I bring the iron right next to the machine is for paper piecing and then I set up 2 stations so I stand up between segments. I think of it as a workout, much better than having to work at a computer :-) Thank you Karen for sharing, it can take much longer when you do trial & error!

Struggling finding the right heights for stuff and in the middle of it all IKEA discontinued the line of Alex I was going to use UGG! Start over now!!! So I’ll use this zone guide for sure !!!!

Until i can finish some shelving &buildout, my machine is on the dining room table. I use a three-drawer light-weight cabinet on castors that Zi can move out if the space when needed. I have a lazy Susan on dining table with sewing containers that can also be moved easily. Those things are rough equivalents of Karen’s zones. With practice, it works.

Thank goodness my professional line of work made me be organized and disciplined. I don’t have an ability to do the zones, as I have to incorporate three spaces. Fabric organization is a work in progress and much harder. But I’m making it work. Organization . . . So satisfying!

Loved this video! I've been in the process of reorganizing my sewing room lately and your suggestions are so helpful. I created a mobile "zone 1" by getting a 3-tiered rolling cart. The cart has a small footprint, so it can be pushed out of the way. I keep most of my everyday tools on it, along with some thread, bobbins, and machine attachments. I have two sewing machines, so I just pull it to the part of the room I'm using. Once I did this, it helped me get more organized with the rest of my space.

I just ordered one of those too. Since I sew in the guest room, I try to keep a firm rule of being able to knock it down and set it back up in our bedroom in 15-20 min (not counting 1 small bureau and 1 closet with wire shelving). That means a small folding worktable serves as both sewing and cutting area. I'm hoping that small cart from JoAnn's will keep my zone 1 stuff off the work area but still right to hand.

You did it again! I’ve just finished building IKEA furniture and have semi-purged (still too attached to too much; round two coming). Now I’m putting things onto shelves, into cubbies, command hooking, and cord clipping. But how to organize those new drawers and arrange all the newly created sewing table space? Now I have a system. I can still use eye-pleasing baskets, boards, buckets but in a thoughtful way. Thank you so much for your guidance. Gotta go, I have fun work ahead.

I've always had to work with zones... I just didn't realize it! It makes great sense! I do the same thing with my office for work... my most used pens, sticky notes, etc are within reach. Other stuff is a bit further and office supplies even further. Love your explanations!!!!

Thank you Karen you have inspired me, I'm busy for next coulpe of months with fruit harvest and drying but thereafter my time will be spent decluttering ang organising my sewing room, and also getting all my fabric from two additional bedrooms. A lot of fabric will be donated to charities for quilt making as I will never be able to sew it all in 2lifetimes, have left overs from 2 shops that closed and the addicted to collecting samples of fabric, they are great for scrappy quilts and have stopped me buying yardage of collections. Great idea for fabrics you must havw but not the budget to buy larger quantities.

I just found your videos yesterday, and I love them. I've already watched 7! I have lots of drawer space in my sewing room--that's great, but I can't always remember what drawer contains what. So instead of searching through 4 drawers before I find the right one, I put post it notes on the front of each drawer. Likewise a list on the front of each closet. It makes things easy to find, AND I don't forget about projects just because they're put away.

I have just started to clen/organize my sewing items and just came across your videos and have learned a lot! I've been thinking of turning a spare bedroom (no one ever sleeps over) into my sewing room and love the sewing triangle which would fit perfectly in there. Presently I have to go in that room for accessing my ironing. Have some goals to think of now, thank you.
