This is so timely, I just completed my statement of purpose and have been thinking whether or not to edit because I didn't mention the faculty member I want to work with. Also thank you for spotlighting on the importance of applying to where you fit. I got a school in Canada but I'm reluctant to apply because the lecture I won't to work with is not taking new student. Its a daunting process honestly, but I feel I should write him to see if he might give me a chance or maybe I should look for opportunity else where.

Hey Ann! These videos of yours have been so helpful to me as I tackle this. What advice would you give for someone applying to programs that are completely remote and basically prerecorded and uploaded to coursera or something like that? There are a lot more of these types of programs now, and they don't really feature any interaction with faculty or research within the department or thesis. How would someone tackle talking about the department in cases like these?

What about is your program does not focus on research 🥴 instead is very practicum. In the program I am going to apply they don't request to do a research in order to get the máster degree. Instead a number of ours doing intership. Btw the program is a EDM in counseling. Will it be okay to focus on other qualities of the program instead of mentioning a specific professor?

Hi Ann, hope you're well! Quick question: if we are not in a health field or a field that does research per se, is it okay to not include a professor's name? I am mid-application for a MS in Analytics, and I'm unable to find anything on professors for the program doing "research". The program is basically to expand our understanding of programming languages and statistical skills to prepare us as data analysts/scientists. I'm planning to mention a few of the classes/descriptions by name instead. Is this a mistake? Thank you!

Hey Maam, I am willing to apply for fall 2023 for my Master's program. When I was doing my research, I found some universities asked for a Personal Statement( PS) alongside a Statement of Purpose. What exactly should be talked about on PS provided that SOP being academic? Also, is the diversity essay somewhat similar to the PS? And how much weightage does the GRE hold if the university has waived it off or made it optional?

Hi! I’m hoping that someone will kindly answer this. I find that I am having a problem understanding if an SOP is the same as answering those essay questions as part of the admission(like why this school or program and how this program will help you achiever your long term and short term goals) Is this the same? Because in all the unis I plan to apply to none has talked of writing an SOP but they rather essays that need to be answered I will appreciate anybody’s answer. Thank you!
@freezeblizz2 жыл бұрын
Well, I see the same issue but I think, it's more or less the same. Nowadays, many universities just ask for a shorter version of SOP/essays (around 250 words) but with VERY specific questions. As far as I know, they still call it "Statement Of Purpose" though, but specific SOP. I don't know if it's a blessing or a curse haha, but honestly, I am just trying to see the bright side of it, which is "writing less, less bullshit, & make sure to ANSWER the question in your writing". I think it should be beneficial for us who has a lot to offer to the university BUT are not very good at writing. Maybe they are starting to realize that not everybody is a good 1000 words story-telling writer, haha. Idk... One university might ask for 3 different essays with 3 different questions. Just gotta try our best & make sure to answer the question. Well, I am no expert, but I hope my answer helps you. I am just somebody who is currently going through the same thing. Anyways, I wish you the best of luck :)

Thank you so much, Prof. Anne. I want to testify, from my own experience, that what Prof. Anne explained was very close to the truth (at least in my case). I applied for a Masters program at one of the top 5 universities in the world. Recently, I passed the administrative test and was invited to attend virtual interview with the program directors. This is crazy, because if I have to be honest, my achievements are way less groundbreaking compared to my peers. My GPA is not 4.0 and I don't even have any publication with me as the author or co-author. But if I have to say if there's one thing that (kind of) saved my application, it must be my personal statement. I acknowledge that my personal statement speaks "Fit" from the get-go. My work experience and problems encountered in the field, however, match with the solutions offered by one of the Professors in the program. The advancements that I want to create is related to what the Professor and the faculty is doing right now. Now, that I listen to Prof. Anne and reflect back on my case, I realize that "Fit" is my strongest point. This video is enlightening and I hope everybody who's watching can study their dream Masters program! ❤

Hi, Great video. but I have a question. I saw someone else asked too. Is the advice more specifically for Ph.D. & research-based master's students? what about people who want to get a master's degree to get more profound technical knowledge, such as MS Finance, business analytics, engineering, etc, that are less focused on research? do we still need to mention the name of the professor for a specific course maybe? or how does it work? Because what if the professor happens to stop teaching at that university? or anything can happen. Don't you think it will lessen our opportunity to study there because we are TOO specific to just one individual rather than the entire thing? What do you think? Thank you so much, would highly appreciate your feedback. :)
