A good message. Being a person almost completely surrounded by those who wouldn't give things like anime, MLP, or even just non-action, non-sport related things a chance it really speaks to me as a person willing to try ALMOST anything just to get a feel for it. For these people I near constantly remind them that even for the things they love today, there had to be a time when it was something new that they had never seen/experienced before. On a broader scale it could be said that many of society's problems arise from simply not willing to give some things a chance and/or not willing to try understand that which they are not already familiar with. In these cases it's usually because it's easier to make general assumptions about things/people than to actually know what/whom they're dealing with be it with. Back on Topic! Evolving tastes to suit your growth. Things to live by!

It's funny because I'm already exactly this. When it comes to video games, anime, and music, I never truly dislike anything. I can get into almost anything as long as there is something there that is appealing to me. Sometimes I find things boring at first, but instead of completely dismissing it I say that I'll "get to it when it the time is right"- I understood that things might not quite click with me until later on. The only problem is that it gets hard to keep track of all your interests when you have so many- I tend to favour the newest thing I get into and fandom hop a lot. I feel like I neglect and get less interested in the things I used to like, even though I still love them. I just get less... actively involved with it? The feeling of it being a "new amazing thing!" simply isn't there anymore. But drifting away from something and coming back to it after a while can bring back that feel of enjoyment, at least for me.

That's similar to how I am, but there are things that I have a definite distaste for in anime (not related to genre). For example I love Gurren Lagann, but felt episodes 4 and 6 weren't up to snuff. I also abhor the animes Girls Bravo and School Days despite my intrigue on a conceptual level. However, I tend to like much, much more than I dislike. If I were to list all the anime I liked that I watched over the past year this post would be absurdly long. Other than that I agree completely. :)

I was worried for a moment there; my taste in music never seems to stay the same, so I was starting to think that maybe there was actually something wrong with me specifically. Kinda random but whenever someone says they "don't watch anime" I kinda wanna look at them and be like "it's okay, I don't watch live action shows". I know I should probably broaden my horizons but sometimes I stick to my guns purely out of spite :P

I've been saying for a long time that anyone who says they "don't like anime" really just hasn't found an anime they like, or probably has a preconceived notion of what anime is. It's really hard for me to imagine that an entire medium could fail to appeal to someone on every level if they're into other, similar mediums already.

Sometimes I hear people refer to anime as a "genre". It's not a genre, it's an art form which can be literally any genre. There are so many different shows out there and people who say they don't watch anime are seriously missing out on a lot.

Kyiko ikr? it bothers me so much when people gotta be like that :( As silly as it sounds, I secretly hope that at some point in my life time anime will become as commonly accepted as a medium as say video games or films based off comics. Excellent points made here. Broadening your horizons and exploring and trying new things is what being an artist is all about. It is about exploration and discovery, experimentation and creation. Limiting yourself to watching or reading about only one thing may make you an expert on it to a degree but it makes it more difficult to move on and accept something else can be just as good and appeal to you just as much as something you are familiar with.

I love you and this video cause it pretty much invites the veiwer to do the two thing I want from people aside from politeness, it asks them to be really openminded, and to challenge themselves with something that may broaden their ability to understand others and themselves. People who do this and people who can ask this in a way that others might comply are why I still try to make new friends to replace the old ones who betrayed me or failed so hard at this that I could not enjoy their company.

It's pretty amazing to sometimes look back at how ones own taste in all kind of things has evolved over the years. For me this is especially obvious for my taste in music, shows and games I enjoy but I can also notice it in my taste of clothes and food. I still have most of the songs I've listened to far over 10 years ago and from time to time I take a nostalgic look back and listen to them. It's interesting to ask myself why I enjoyed the song once, what it meant to me and if I still like it outside of nostalgia. So far none of my friends could tell me into what kind of "genre" I am, since whenever I show them my entire collection it is a weird mix of different genres I liked at different points in my life. But as stated it's not just music, for me it is just the most obvious and easiest to see evolution of my personal taste. It's also important to not be blinded by nostalgia, there're many games and tv shows (be it cartoon or anime) I've enjoyed as a child but would have to admit that they weren't, or rather still aren't, that great overall in retrospective and will never live up to my memories of them. Also with the evolution of the internet it is much easier to look for "more of the same" things you already enjoy and while it helps one to refine and aquire a more sophisticated taste there's also the risk of becoming to focused and narrow in their taste and being blind to it. I think everyone has certain "no-goes" that prevents them from ever enjoying a certain piece of media, but some people have so many "no-goes" that they can only enjoy a work only if it is basically a carbon-copy of a work they already enjoy, it just has to be so and so and it has to fullfill these requirements and check these criteria and if it tries to stray from the formula it's unenjoyable to them. For example the video game "Plants vs. Zombies", personally I avoided the game for a pretty long time because it looked like a mobile game or flash game and was basically kind of a tower-defense game, a genre I just cannot really enjoy. Yet once I played the demo I was really enjoying it. A friend of mine didn't want to give the same game a chance because it had Zombies in them (which are so overused) and avoided it for a long time even though by all accounts that friend of mine should've loved that game... which proved to be true after she finally gave it a chance.

Patience is a big part of it, but recently I've noticed that it's largely peer pressure that keeps people from trying new things most of the time. People judge things by their fanbases more than they even realize. We all have an idea of what a Dr. Who fan is like, or a brony, or FPS gamers, or Minecraft players, or anime watchers, etc. How many times have you refused to look at something because of an overzealous fanbase that has ruined it's image for you? I made the conscious decision not to judge ANYTHING by its fanbase and since then I have gotten into so many wildly different things that I never thought I would find any kind of value in. And yet when I try to show someone something I know they might like, all they seem to care about is how liking that thing will mean they have to adopt a label. "I don't watch Hetalia because I'm not a weabo fangirl." "I don't play RPGs because I'm not a socially inept nerd." "I don't like Invader Zim because I'm not a goth girl/hipster." That kind of thinking has been the bane of my existence for awhile now, and I can't help but see the correlation in how people consume their media affecting the way they think and behave in their daily lives and vise versa. It's really sad. The ultimate test of patience and expanding your tastes in new forms of communication: Homestuck. If you can give it a good chance and put your feelings about the most annoying fanbase on the internet other than PewDiePie's aside, you might find something that you were not at all expecting to be as clever and deeply moving as it is. (I recommend watching the Let''s Read Homestuck videos here on KZbin if you are up to the challenge.)

It is difficult to engage meaningfully with all forms of media within a normal productive lifespan, so it is emotionally convenient to form strong opinions based on very little information and stick to them for years on end. And to some extent, that allows us to engage more thoroughly with the media we don't exclude.

I wholeheartedly agree with this video, which is why I find whenever people use the excuse constantly of "I only like this genre/etc." to be self defeatist. Why subject yourself to only a few things instead of exploring what's out there? I have actually noticed that once I let go of a few of my biases, I could enjoy what I was watching more. I feel that my tastes has changed in the last few years, and if I could find all of my online posts and info about anime to show that, I'd most likely disagree with them strongly now. I've found quite a few things I like just for trying them out, and I wasn't disappointed. I was one of those people years ago who claimed to dislike stuff that was shonen, I would dislike slice of life shows in an instant, and I found stuff like GITS to be out of my interest of taste. However, last year I found out that what I really dislike about stuff like shonen is the cliches, not the demographic itself. Slice of life seems to be easier to enjoy as well now, since I can watch Lucky Star and Hanayamata without major irritation of anything major not happening. The interest of mine that did suddenly grow that I most likely had pushed aside unknowingly due to not looking further into the genre was the magical girl one, which has to be my favorite now. Oh, and I have a interest in Gundam of all things, which was something I never saw coming.

While I'm definitely not immune to this myself, it's something that definitely bothers me about a lot of people, even people within the anime fandom. There was a time that I noticed that most teenage otaku only seemed to be interested in their Naruto's and Bleach's, and at the anime club I attended, weren't really willing to try new anime at all. It frustrated me so much that I made a couple of macros online about the issue, and I'm trying to get an anime club started up for teens again that will promote the same thing. (Getting into new anime) If I can get it successfully up and running, I'm definitely going to recommend your videos to give them a good idea of what animes are out there. :3

I agree that it cannot in any way be considered an anime, but that doesn't mean I can't like it. I love this series, and whether or not it can be labelled with a certain word has nothing to do with how good the thing is in itself.

Scuro1000 I take issue with this whole "non-japanese animation cannot be anime by definition" stance. Animation has developed so, so many varied styles in every culture. Especially in Japan! Japan uses anime, or animation, to refer to any animation, because it needs a separate category to live-action. Yet, for some reason, Americans violently defend the notion that Anime is Japan-made only. The irony would be hilarious, if it didn't mean very vocal people can keep amazing titles like Avatar, RWBY, and Wakfu off of sites like Cruncy Roll because of their closed-minded bias.

Same here. As for me, I can't remember not watching anime actually (just that when I was little I did not have cable for years and relied on VHS tapes and no internet instead.) Once I grew up and was able to search series of my own, it was all downhill from there XD. This year and 2011-2012 would have to be the years I have enjoyed anime the most. Since I'm now forming more of my own thoughts about factors like animation, exposition, and character development, I feel I can form more well ground opinions besides whether the show is a part of a genre or demographic I favor more than others, making it absent from the unknown factor of whether it'll appeal to me or not. The more I watch anime, the more I like it. There hasn't been any other medium I have searched and dived into as deep as this one.
@midir400010 жыл бұрын
Yes! Its similar with the consumption of any media. Books, movies, comics, tv-series. The more you ingest, the more expectations you build, and the more reaction you get when things deviate from those expectations. Sometimes those reactions are positive, sometimes negative. The absence of typical tropes can sometimes be relished, and other times, even if they were tropes you were sick to death of, or never even liked, you would still get stimulation via their absence, whether you notice it or not. So, over the longer course of being in the "fandom," the more refined your tastes. The more refined your tastes, the more things can exceed or let down those pre-conceived expectations.

I find myself getting more open minded towards trying new genres than I was when I was younger- One of my biggest gripes with the longer-running animes was that things would get ridiculously quiet and slow paced after a huge, epic fight. I found the sudden change of said pace rather jarring and sometimes gave up on a series because of how frequently it would happen. I never thought I'd ever like a show like Natsume's Book of Friends until I started watching it- it basically took those pacing things I mentioned and flipped it, making it a quiet show with the occasional action scene mixed in. I find I actually like that concept better, especially since I'm now more open to shows that explore characters instead of just fighting and action. With as stressful of a schedule as I get, it's nice to sit down and watch something with such a quiet pace and likeable characters. Another lesson I learned from this show: quiet almost never means boring! (Although I'm a bit of an introvert, and my idea of a good time is staying home and working on a project or planning one.) I also found that I like more complicated storylines, where the story is less "good vs evil" and more "oh hey, we have conflicting interests. Dammit". That kind of plotline frees me to root for whoever I want, or even all of them and has me waiting to see how it all pans out.

My tastes are expansive and I simply have things which are my favorite genre wise, for instance in anime I can watch anything, however I enjoy action comedies that are stupid yet effective the most. Cue needless, guren lagaan, and kill la kill. there are many things j never though I would enjoy, but after experimenting I came to find out I enjoyed it, that is life, trying new things furthers your character, I am a guy who loves expressing my passion. If I am watching a great anime I will tell people about it, I will play themes for people, I will recommend it to people, and buy merchandise. I generally am passionate about media, however taste is much more than that, different people will have different experiences.

I usually am thinking the same thoughts but I at least give the person like 5-10 min before I start getting impatient but w other people it feels like 30sec go by and they're already tapping their foot. 45sec, they're cursing, a min, they're yelling and so it continues until finally like a min and half comes around and they are storming out or are totally done w whatever. In the end, they never really gave anything a chance.

Never forget that there is taste and there is quality, allow taste to evolve and adapt, but also increase minimum quality requirement with the progress of the media (e.g. games not made in 30 fps in 4:3 rez, books made today not being written like game of thrones or lord of the rings which digress and fill half their page count with literally nothing of value for the story or world building just because the internet didnt exist thus it had to be padded, but instead like... well anything written by Terry Pratchett).

What I mean by this is that growing up is not losing old tastes, but the accumulation of it.

Digi, it's not so much that people don't have patience, for most people it's that people don't have that much free time to devote to solitary media consumption, so when they have the time they prefer to watch/read/listen to stuff they _know_ they'll like. With that said, ever since you started focusing on anime for this channel, I've watched two series: Psycho-Pass and Noragami (the first anime I've touched since Death Note). Not really sure if moe should be considered a genre but I digress. I have given harem shows a chance and I can openly say that I do enjoy the Monogatari franchise. Other than that though... The shows that I have watched of that genre were just not something for me. I kept rolling my eyes every minute when I was watching one. The overly moe shows are just not my thing. I do like slice of life shows/ movies. I love Usagi Drop and the Wolf Children movie. It's just the "cute girls doing cute things" which I just can't get into. Other than that though, I'm open for anything. Does that mean that I'll like everything? No. Nah uh. I dislike many shows simply because i've seen through experience what makes an excellent show and what makes a terrible one.

It's such a silly little thing and I would even call this video condescending if more often than not the kind of narrow-mindedness described in the video wasn't so typical thing to see. A dear friend of mine hates mecha with such a passion that you can't convince him to watch anything that has A robot in it. Even in a minor role? Doesn't matter. I like to think myself as open-minded with all kinds of media. The fact that I can't, for example, name an american rap artists I like I see as weakness rather than hard opinion. @TheThoerlChannel10 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't think not knowing a rap artist you like is a problem at all. As long as you don't say "rap is garbage", there is no need for you to explore every inch of music-genre. And I wouldn't call that a weakness. If you are not interested in rap music, (or even don't like it) but still accept and respect people who make / listen to rap music, your open-mindedness is perfectly healthy. I don't know any either. Maybe one or two eminem songs I can listen to once in a while, but that's it. But I completely respect every fan of the genre (as a fan of the genre, I obviously can't know about their personalities beyond that). I also accept every fan of Justin Biebers music, because who cares.

Hiandbye95 It was actually a subtle hint, yes. Don't say Eminem though (I kinda like him already). +TheThoerlChannel That's a smart way to look at it too, I wouldn't say I'm closing out this way either. I just feel like most of my indifference of rap comes from the fact I'm not really familiar enough with the standard practices and not because I've looked thoroughly into it and disliked the whole. I feel like it works in very different way to most of the genres I tend to listen (more poetry than chord progression I'd guess).

I agree, this video is a little condescending, but at the same time yeah too many people exist who put weird deliberate limits on their taste. On an individual level you can try to convince these people that they should expand their taste, but here I'm sort of giving them the broad strokes of why they ought to, and hopefully inspiring them.

OrangeVision Well, then, I think Macklemore is the kind of rapper to whom you refer the people who don't like the whole Macho-attitude in Rap - his lyrics are honest, mostly clean, and down-to-earth - but I guess if you like Eminem that is not something that bothers you. Maybe still give The Language Of My World (Macklemores first album) a listen?

I have a question that I hope isnt taken the wrong way, And this is based on a blief system. I agree one hundred precent with what your saying but i am also a person to believe in standard's. Like in all honesty I dont think Grand theft auto is an appropriate game for anyone (I am sorry if any grand theft auto fans read this i truly have no wish to offend) My question is this. Do you believe in Standards in media that apply to everyone? Like I said I agree with your video and i tend to keep an open mind about the kind of media other's participate in so my question is much out of curiosity. After all most things can be chocked up to being opinion based so I hope it is clear I mean no harm out of my curiosity. To clarify on my question I understand that people can chose which standard they wish to participate in as well as that there are different standards for different ages. If you see fit this is a question i would thoroughly enjoy seeing you do a video on.... if you deem fit of course.

I can appreciate just about any genre, but there's a limit to what my sensibilities are going to allow and it has more to do with the execution and type of storytelling than the work itself. i'd say this is why i found ping pong a great show when i generally can't get into sports series in general. i'm sure my tastes will continue to change as i grow but i see it as more of a natural process that's shaped by my outward experiences rather than because of concentrated effort. a telltale sign of this is how i've largely stopped watching anime and moved to manga instead as the types of narratives, visuals and storytelling i prefer are found there much more easily.

Recently I bought Inhumanity Awakening, a comic that I had no idea what it was about, and I didn't like it, I felt it boring, now I'm thinking on whether or not buy the next issue, it's a 2 issue story so I don't know, however I'm glad that at least tried to like it because is part of the Inhuman saga (which I only have one issue too) which I do like. Another tale about my personal taste is with an episode of Adventure Time, Donny. I think the episode is good, but I still don't like it because it made feel really sad, the same reason of why I don't like Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evangelion is great, really well done, but it made feel empty and depressed, I don't like when a show, anime or whatever makes feel like that.

What about things that ignore basic rules of narrative structure without any semblance of self awareness that would make the work a parody or a subversion of basically accepted structures or things that ignore internal continuity but not for the benefit of telling a better short term story? I don't know if I completely disagree or if I'm completely on board with this. Do things that simply do not hold up to considerate attentive viewing apply to this message? Or is this a bias you and I share that we treat as more objective than other biases? I've always said that my favorite genera is "good" But is disregarding the Terra Nova's and the Michael Bay movies (Except Pain and Gain because that was awesome) and the RWBY's of the world bad, because we're biassed towards the classically constructed works?
@Trixiethegoldenwitch10 жыл бұрын
Mmm it's hard to say for sure. Garzey's Wing is one of my favorite anime because it's badly made in ways that are hilarious. I can't sit through a transformers movie, but I also don't have the patience to find anything good about them. The lines between "good craft" and "good despite craft" is thin and based on the individual. Noise music fans for instance like myself will argue that Merzbow or something, which totally defies any conventional songwriting, is still good, but partly because of the craft... even we might not like "badly made" music, unless it is somehow interesting. Bottom line, this is why I think it's okay to dislike things, but maybe not to give up on anything too easily.

@demeterhajos77728 жыл бұрын
Roruman Understandable, if it doesn't replace his taste. But it did, and he wouldn't recognize a good anime if it's made after the mid 2000's, even if you rub it in his face. If one of his so called favorites (more like one he obsessed with) would release next season without any change instead of the 80's or 90's, he would hate it, because it's new.
@l0lmanPH8 жыл бұрын
Not really, he likes a few recent shows too, like Bahamut and Wixxos, and he prefers some modern remakes of retro works than the original, like Yamato! His point is that modern anime is significantly worse, though, and he does a good job arguing it without bias.
@demeterhajos77728 жыл бұрын
pff... judging by some of his vids, he has some serious bias towards entire genres and hates almost everything. And he is trolling half of the anime reviewers on youtube. Maybe there is a few exception, but he hates some really good show som even as good as some of the classics from the 90'-s. And I'm not talking about the popular trash, there are some rightfully hated series. Btw that's exactly where he is wrong. Anime is not significantly worse, it's significantly bigger. Almost as much new anime released in the last spring season than in 1996 and 1997 together. By the end of this season there will be almost as much new releases this year only than from the beginning of 1990 to the end of 1995. There are significantly more bad anime today but significantly more good as well. There were entire seasons, maybe even years in the 90's when there were nothing worth mentioning among the new series. And now there is at least one or two shows every season that is way above mediocre. But he gets something right. He is a snob. But that's not one should be proud of.

@hsapin10 жыл бұрын
I would say that Glasslip isn't exactly an example of a good anime of its genre, so in my opinion it isn't really what you should be basing your opinions of the genre off of.
@t3hsourcey10 жыл бұрын
Which is why I'm not basing my impressions of an entire genre on either. I'm also following Barakamon, Hanayamata, Shounen Hollywood, Gekkan Shoujo as SoLs and moderately enjoying them. As for Argevollen I started Gundam 0079 and find it a lot more compelling, it even puts Aldnoah.Zero to shame really. Those are examples of patience as well as knowing how things can turn out badly. That way you can appreciate the good stuff a lot more.
@hsapin10 жыл бұрын
V Stanev In my opinion, Aldnoah.Zero is pretty bad actually and I don't know why people enjoy it so much, so I think you're right there although my knowledge of mecha is limited. Your comment sounded to me like you were basing your opinions of an entire genre on one show, and I wasn't really surprised because of how many people actually base their opinions of a genre after seeing one show in that genre, but I'm glad to hear that you're checking others in that genre out. I'm currently watching Barakamon and Gekkan Shoujo as well and I'm enjoying both too, Barakamon especially. I would strongly recommend checking out some of the more critically acclaimed Sols though if you really want to get a taste for the genre.
@t3hsourcey10 жыл бұрын
hsapin I'm basing my tolerance for the lows of said genres, not their entirety of course. I've been lurking quite a lot around MAL and have gathered a huge list of shows, plenty of them are SoL. Heck, Great Teacher Onizuka is my favorite comedy drama.

I think you shouldn´t even judge a genre at all. Sure you can but there will always be some anime that you will like regardless of the genre. And its mostly about what you want to watch. If you want a good story and action don´t watch a Slice of Life anime. Expectations are really important. I watched Gurren Lagann, with no expactations at all. Except Guilty Crown it was like the first Mecha anime I have seen I guess. At I loved it. If I had started watching it after hearing stuff like "best show ever", I guess I wouldn´t have liked it that much. Also, at first I thought Aldnoah zero was ok but after i noticed how people hype it and are like "uhh this is the best anime of the year" after 5 episodes I kinda started to dislike it even more.

Do I have bad taste or an I just close minded? really don't know.
@mralbum325610 жыл бұрын
The very act of trying something new, even if it leads nowhere, is better than not trying anything at all. For example, I took a fencing class one semester. I wasn't the best, and while I liked the skill required to fence well, I did not have that skill when I tried it. I decided that my enjoyment of fencing was not worth the time to develop my own skill into something decent, and I haven't tried it again. I still learned a lot about the art of fencing, and what it meant to be a good fencer. My horizons were expanded and my knowledge of the world increased, even though I did not continue fencing. In short, don't worry if something you try doesn't lead to anything major or minor. The experience of trying it will still have an impact on you, and it is up to you how you react to that impact. So if you tried the anime, didn't like it, then tried and tried again and still didn't like it, don't panic. Just ask yourself: is this anime worth the time and effort to try it again... or should I try something new? Doesn't even have to be anime, ya know. This kind of thing can apply to most every aspect of life, within reason. (anything that would break the law would be a REALLY BAD IDEA to try, for example, because you could get caught and then punished so severely that your life may not recover, depending on how bad the hypothetical thing to try is defined in the eye of the law. Things that are gray areas where the law is concerned can be risky as well, especially when the law finally makes up its mind how to resolve the gray area)

I think this comes down to be aware of WHY you like or dislike something, because that's fine. I don't really like Man of Steel, but many others do. I don't think SAO is the worst thing on the planet (I really don't like it, though), but does that mean Digi is wrong for saying it is? No. That's perfectly natural. You don't have to like everything I do, and vice versa. Your opinions on a piece of media are based on your experience with them, or possibly lack thereof. I say try to give new things a chance, but don't force yourself to. Forcing yourself to watch something you don't want to is NOT giving a chance, you're likely to end up making your mind up before that piece of media even begins. That's my pointless, half-assed rambling on the matter. Why half-assed? Because I'm a lazy son of a bitch. I'm not proud of it, but I'll admit it.

I disagree with your point and am unwilling to change my view. >:( No, but seriously, tastes are as you mentioned, for escapism, it's for user gratification, for instance, I'm a sucker for romantic comedies because I'm a terrible human being, but I will watch all of them and no matter how poorly written, acted, sequenced and everything it might be, I'll still probably like it, and hey, that's fine by me, and sure you can judge my garish taste in film genre, but it shouldn't be something that could be called weakness, it's what you like, forcing yourself to watch something you hate in an effort to try and realize what's good about it is sort of a moot point, if you don't like it, you already know what's good and bad most of the time, and that's probably what puts you off, no need for the extensive testing of your own mettle when you know how much it can take.
@Trixiethegoldenwitch10 жыл бұрын

Texhnoloyze was a real challenge for me... But it turned out to be a weirdly gratifying experience. I like your approach, Digibro, but I think this should be more applicable to art, and less to entertainment. I'm coming from the fact that I just can't like Game of Thrones. I've seen a few Episodes, but except for the lush visuals I cannot see value in it, other shows simply have done the soap-opera better. I also can't stand Macross with it's (most of the time) god-awful music and even more unnerving characters. My point being, if I know, why I don't like a show, I don't see a point in trudging through it.
