Have you ever wondered if stress and trauma from your past could be making you sick? Author and trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté, says our past experiences may literally be the root cause of “trauma related illness,” something he writes about in his most recent book, “The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture.” Drawing on his experience as both a Holocaust survivor, and a physician, Mate sits down with Dr. Sanjay Gupta for an intimate and wide-ranging conversation to share his steps for healing and living happier lives.

excellent video. One thing I know for sure is that it is far easier to dodge our trauma than it is to deal with it. That explains why there's so many people struggling in so many different ways, and feeling frustrated. There's countless ways to distract ourselves from deep discomfort generated by trauma, especially today. But personally, I have found the hard work needed for healing to be the most rewarding pursuit life can provide.

17:15 Of those I'd gotten deep enough with over the years, I've never known anyone who hasn't experienced trauma at a young age, and observation of the behavior of those not known as well also indicated it. And I have to say that I consider the medical establishment's approach to treating illness to be superficial and inexcusably two-dimensional, pretty much treating people as though they're little more than machines with replaceable parts. [Not you, of course, Dr. Gupta.] I also have to say that I was surprised by what sounded to me like your tone of surprise at the idea of the mind/body connection. I'm at the point where I'd say to any doctor, "How can that not be obvious?" After all, it was science that discovered the placebo effect, and has very suspiciously ignored the mind/body connection that it proved. But then big pharma wouldn't be a fan of further exploration, would it. At least I was able to learn about it from other sources. This passage from the book I'm reading right now "coincidentally" came up today, and it echoes perfectly what Dr. Maté is saying: "But eventually we stop caring about the trivialities, and we realize that the tragedies too are merely the most visible outcroppings of a deeper vein of dysfunction. Life stops making sense. We wonder, as F. did at the mortgage company, what the point is. We keep slogging away perhaps, at our jobs or school out of fear of financial hardship, but at some point even that isn't enough to keep us going. The next step is medication: antidepressants to immune us to the pain; anti-anxiety meds to quell the sense that something is terribly wrong; stimulants to force us to pay attention to things we don't care about. But all of these merely drive the life-force deeper underground. There it builds, bubbling up eventually as cancer, turning against the body as autoimmunity, or exploding outward as violence. No wonder that nearly all the school shootings in the last two decades have involved psychiatric medications." 22:33 "This society might as well be designed to stress people." And I'm pretty sure it was also Dr. Gabor Maté who said, "There is nothing healthy about being well-adjusted to a sick society."
