"school is practicing for work" perhaps for the professor's adult students but HOW SAD if we take this motto and apply it to children!

I feel one of the big issues with this is that the conversation is always about how the individual will use this technology. But at the end of the day the individual has little choice. It us how the corporation/company will use this technology and the individual will need to find the role inside of that.

@@sineadbovell9699 Alex is also fantastic, thank you for talking to him. I wish you asked him about the bias inherent in art he mentioned, he looked very interested in that
@ardenbelfry
@ardenbelfry 4 ай бұрын
I feel this over simplifies what art is. He talks about the finished product without realizing the mistakes and discoveries along the way are just as important. The placement of a line, the pull of a brush, even the numbers of layers chosen show an artists style, an artists soul. Taking away the need to do such things, may seem like freeing up time for an artist to dream, but that is not true. The work, the process, is a time of discovery, not simply reproducing the image in your head, but finding the image beyond it.
@Dplaysitcool

Yes, but Art is essentially an expression of yourself. Your own unique feelings, and the way you see the world. If you imagine the most primitive forms of art, compared to the art of the 19th century. It's vastly different. And it's different because of the advancement of the tools to be able to even better externalise your ideas. To one day be able to have EXACTLY what you're thinking be instantly converted into what you want. That's the ultimate expression! It won't devalue physical painting etc. Imagine how many amazing artist that never were, because they wasn't gifted with the talent to paint....
@ardenbelfry
@ardenbelfry 3 ай бұрын
@@Dplaysitcool I don't feel like you understood what I said. Creating what you see exactly in your head is not where art ends. It's just part of the process. The mistakes you make converting your imagination to paper or whatever your medium is, is part of your style. I hate the word Talent, it makes the blood, sweat and tears spent on learning to draw/paint/sculpt (I.e. fill in your medium) seem meaningless. If a person wants to paint a beautiful picture, paint. You will create crap, but then paint another one and another one. That is one of the differences between an artist and everyone else. An artist doesn't stop creating just because they make crap, they don't stop creating because it is maddening to do so. Great artists go unrecognized all the time, but they exist, even if no one knows.

I thought the Chef and the knife analogy was great until I started rolling it around in my head. The common worry about AI is that it advances to another level and starts to make unexpected or undesirable choices. The knife is never going to make an unexpected change to the performance of the task.
@mrhenry1262
@mrhenry1262 5 ай бұрын
I detest the knife and chef analogy. A chefs knife doesn't make suggestions or efforts which are not the chefs sole choice. When you computerize a knife ... the chef becomes a common machine operator ... and ceases to be chef.

seems to be a disconnect or general misunderstanding here as to what is gained from doing the chores, especially related to art and thinking. That is to say that if Michelangelo used midjourney he would be a bad artist but maybe a really good poet. If Aristotle had chat gpt he would be a bad writer and thinker but maybe good at something else

What an amazing guy. He is 60 if he’s a day and thinks still like a 10 year old. No constraints or limitations. A person who can see how a tool can enhance our humanity where so many fear it will be used to destroy it. I very much hope this guys vision of how we use Ai is the one it comes down on. Some of the things he was saying almost reminded me of Orwell & him talking about in 1984 how the party was destroying language as a way to NOT be able to think & communicate in heretical terms. Yet when asked about this idea of removing language barriers to pure thoughts as just another thing to strip away to get to the point of a thought. Our man once again proves that this can be a great good. I am a tremendous visionary of the future. I’ve not been wrong about anything in 20 years. The problem is. All my predictions are bad. From climate to war to the market, I’ve been right. It’s quite easy tbh. Just go for the most human negative outcome that will make the rich richer & erode workers rights & you almost never get it wrong. But this man’s answers & positivity has shaken my mindset. He gives me some hope that we may have a chance at a human future.

Wow, one of the biggest paradigm shifts for me is when he talked about how an essay is an expression of thoughts so the goal isn't how to write an essay in the future but on how to think. I watched a Neil Degrasse Tyson video about how many times we think about the future as an extension of just more of what we have today. The way he stated it is a paradigm shift and turns education upside down. That was great.

We need AI to remove the "chores"? Is arithmetic a chore. Your frequent example of a calculator freeing us from the need to do mental arithmetic ... but now we have a majority of people who have no ability to scale a proposal/problem/question. Do we outsource this skill to AI? Do we only allow engineers to answer public welfare questions? Do we continue to expect politicians to recognize the long-term impact of their short-term answers?

Evolution took many diverse paths and is still evolving in present time. If AI is an extension of the natural laws , could it take us on a path ( journey) that may come to a dead end.

Thank you for this! I teach computer concepts and coding to poor, African American kids in two non-profit computer labs in Florida. I have been thinking so much about the disruptive effect of AI on traditional programming jobs. One of my students want's to learn Python and I struggled to explain to him that Chat GPT is frighteningly fast at spitting out perfect Python code. I try to teach them the concepts of coding, the logic of coding and thinking about iteration, opacity, generating seemingly random numbers and what these are used for. Even the high school kids don't know what a variable is. Their vocabularies are so small! It's difficult to convince them to read more. They don't believe me when I try to convince them of this. It's just a really difficult thing. I don't dare use AI in front of them because their parents think it is intrinsically evil. The pro-book-banning sentiment here in Florida is terrifying right now! "A knife is not a threat to a chef." Brilliant!

What a great interview! I agree with the perspective that AI will help humans focus less on "chores" and/or administrative tasks. Leading to a new way of creating, innovating and building. I think we will see more thought leaders and storytelling, as people will not need to work on the tidius production side as much. We're seeing this in the rise of content creation. today. Thanks for sharing. 🙏

Quite the opposite. Generative AI is an invitation to continue to carve and craft yourself as an artist. It is a reflection on your ability to, and a challenge to the individual as well, to continually reinvent themselves.
