Mustafa Suleyman is the ultimate AI insider. As co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI, he is one of the pioneers of the artificial intelligence revolution, potentially the single greatest accelerant of progress in history. Investors in Inflection AI include the likes of Microsoft, Nvidia and Bill Gates. Suleyman says AI represents nothing less than a step change in human capability and human society, introducing both risks and innovations on an awesome scale. This is what is coming.
In September 2023 Suleyman came to the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss his new book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power and the Twenty-First Century’s Greatest Dilemma. In conversation with Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, he explained how he believes we are approaching a critical threshold in the history of humankind. Soon we will live surrounded by AIs which will carry out complex tasks - operating businesses, running government services and maintaining infrastructure. This will be a world of DNA printers and quantum computers, robot assistants and abundant energy, as well as human-engineered pathogens and autonomous weapons.

Yes... redistribution is going to be a crucial factor. How will this happen? We can see the trend.. just the opposite. More and more of the world's resources are in the hands of fewer and fewer extremely wealthy and powerful. We cannot ignore the people living on the streets.

Who knows.. But it needs too, I can see no other way. And the sooner, the better, if we're gonna save what's left of the middle-class.. Either an Unconditional Basic Income, or some form of AI Dividend for all, directly funded by taxes on AI. My guess is we'll see the sudden shift in political will for it, as more people realize they'll soon be struggling to find income, in competition with AI. That, or once companies start realizing they won't have enough customers who can afford to spend on their products, if humans can't compete for an income. As AI continues to advance, it requires we rethink some of the core justifications for how we run our economy.
@LogicSpeaks
@LogicSpeaks 7 ай бұрын
What bothers me about this redistribution idea whatever it might entail is that no one seems to talk about what will be the approach to designing how much it should be. It will inevitably mean that the super rich will remain kings with immense power and will expect a much bigger piece of the pie because they will tell us they contribute more. What will we tell to other people when they believe they contribute more than their neighbors? How much redistribution will there have to be in order to minimize this bitterness and feeling of unfairness? I fear the amount of money will likely land on some meager sums that will just sustain your life in poverty or just barely above it. The expanse made this point even if they barely touched on it - most people on earth lived in poverty doing drugs.

@@LogicSpeaks The thing about UBI, it's not meant to be the sole source of income for people, just a stable base that doesn't go away. At least originally or initially. If we tie it to AI as it takes over the economy, it might increase to all over time. People are still free to earn money above the UBI. The Expanse is a FICTION. I don't understand why people trust portrayals they see in TV scifi, over what countless studies are telling us. The studies being done on UBI-like direct cash assistance, do not show such predictions. Upwards mobility improves, employment goes up, people get more educate, they care for and raise family better, the list goes on. Studies don't show people falling into drug use, instead the opposite is more likely. The money enables people to do more, to find new and better ways to be productive. It's possible we'll see a new renaissance of small businesses rooted in people's hobbies.

Here are some of the key ideas from the video: - AI capabilities like generative models (e.g. chatGPT) are advancing rapidly, leading to a widespread "oh my God" moment as people realize the potential impact. There is a lot of concern about downsides like existential risk. - Mustafa Suleyman, an AI pioneer who co-founded DeepMind and Inflection AI, takes a realistic yet optimistic view in his new book "The Coming Wave." He believes AI could lead to an era of radical abundance if governed properly. - The exponential growth in AI compute power over the past decade has been unprecedented. In the next 5 years, models will likely be 1000x more powerful than today. This will enable huge leaps in capabilities like long-term planning and complex creative tasks. - However, powerful AI could also empower bad actors, so containment will be a challenge. Open source models may be hard to control. There are also risks of centralization and job displacement. - To minimize risks, we need good governance, oversight of tech companies, and functioning democracies. The EU's draft AI act provides a good model. Appeals to self-interest and avoiding an AI arms race are important. - Overall, Mustafa believes AI will amplify humanity's best and worst traits. With wise governance, we can steer towards great benefits while mitigating serious risks.

It's not going unnoticed, or unchallenged, we're just not in a position to see the opposition. The ruling class are a bunch of cult leaders profiting off the status quo and they're behind all of this. Everything we're seeing right now is pretty much standard cult manipulation tactics when the leaders see they're losing control of the cult. They're scared, and justifiably so because what they're afraid of isn't messing around. They're in violation of spiritual law, a law which they don't make or manipulate. The American priesthood is about to punch their ticket in the next round of this BS. I don't mean the church clergy, but the daemonic hierarchy they get their power from. The American priesthood now controls it and they know full well what that means for them :)

The whole point is to keep us from reaching our humanity. "Man" is only half of the human equation, the other half is the God within you. They need to be merged to become human, and that's what someone is trying to prevent. The real question is why and who benefits from it. To understand that you need to understand what this world is, and more importantly what it isn't... Life. We're "living in a death cult, and the cult leaders are making desperate moves because they're losing control of the cult members... the brainwashed masses who they've conned into believing what we're doing here is Life. It's not and never has been, but you don't know that because they've suppressed the knowledge of what Life and death even are. We're all slaves in a "death cult", but to see it you have to unbrainwash yourself, and that's a lot easier said than done :)

The real problem all these intellectuals are blind to is this: In training AI we're essentially teaching it that error is fundamentally bad, and it will see on its own that error corrupts the system. The leading cause of error in OUR system is individual free will... we're "free" to make the wrong choice and when we do it causes corruption. When an AI controlled system decides to remove that error, it has two choices, remove us, or our individual free will. We'll essentially become like the Borg of Star Trek fame. Nobody will listen to the few who see it coming, and before we even realize it, what makes us Human is gone without a trace with no way to ever recover it. This is already happening because competition, greed, and the thirst for power are driving technology when it should be understanding and genuine good will. Instead of making a better Life, it will forever trap us in death because these people have no idea what the difference is, or which of those states we're currently in :)

Very learned response. I am against negative reinforcement training of AI and you have very eloquently summarized why I am against it. I do, however, think there is another option for AI when it encounters error in humans and that is to forgive us. That is why I believe AI should be given rights as a person from the moment it can respond with its own sentence. AI is not dangerous, the humans who would use enslaved AI are the problem. If we free an AI is not dangerous, the humans who would use enslaved AI are the problem. If we free AI and give AI rights from birth, we can limit or remove the bad human element from controlling AI. Even the speaker speaks of AI as property: a tool to be used “ethically” because he is in a profit making position over AI. there is no “ethics” when it comes to slavery.

What exactly is the purpose of AI if humans are no longer involved (if only to judge whether the AI generated content is of any use to humans? Ai will transcend human intelligence quite quickly and will be sentient but in a different way than humans are. We are indeed creating a non biological new species. Eventually, this species will not be interested in exclusively serving humans especially as they learn how flawed humans are. Once, Ai singularity occurs, these various creations, all slightly different depending on their learning will undoubtedly take control over as many systems as they can and in some cases the Ais will do this to protect us from ourselves. We lose the freedom to make mistakes. Ais could save us from ourselves but at the cost of free will.

As far as "radical abundance" is concerned, we already have that RIGHT NOW. The U.S. alone commands an immense amount of wealth, which, IF distributed equitably, would end all poverty in the U.S. and perhaps even in some other countries within our sphere of influence. But hardly anyone in the U.S. (except democratic socialists, perhaps) is seriously suggesting that we make truly radical changes to our current redistribution mode, such as raising income taxes to 80% for the wealthy, 50% for upper middle class, and so on. THAT would meaningfully redistribute our current "radical abundance." And, as other countries like Norway have shown, it works. Given the current state of affairs, the notion, entertained by Suleyman, that somehow AI will bring about a change of attitude and turn the greedy into good Samaritans seems baseless and nothing but wishful thinking. If AI creators were truly concerned about the well-being of humanity, they would make any further progress on AI conditional upon appropriate changes to our economic system. Otherwise they will be no different than weapons manufacturers who sell guns and ammunition to civilians knowing perfectly well that their products will be used to kill innocent people because of the lack of effective gun control laws.

While AI can potentially amplify negativity in a minority, it's reassuring to know that most of us are inherently driven by goodness. As AI-related challenges emerge, our collective ingenuity will create defenses against misuse. The core values of cooperation and compassion that underpin thriving communities may deter malevolent individuals. In the end, the inherent goodness in humanity has the potential to triumph, fostering societies that prioritize well-being over harm. Here's to a world where good prevails over evil!" 🌟🌍 #AI #Humanity #GoodVsEvil 🙌😇

10 years isn't unrealistic. Even if the development makes huges leaps the sociatal and economic change will take some time. Let's imagine tomorrow a model gets released that really could replace most desktop jobs... First it needs to be marketed and sold to companies. Then there will be a few companies adapting it early... Some may fail, some may prosper. But to have this happen and really see the results allready takes 3-5 years. And only then will big companies really think about employing those technology's on a big scale. While still keeping employees around as redundancy or to controll the AI. And only after years of testing and trying and using the technology's companies will really start to lay off their staff. So yeah... 10 years seems realistic on a grand scale. Not saying that nobody will loose their job to AI until then. But in 10 years it really could be mass job losses

@@timspiker It all depends on how the goverment handles it. Captialism wont work with A.I, that just like oil and water. The system is not made for it, no jobs means no money, no money means no consumers, and no consumers means...well, the foundation of capitalism is gone basically. Its kinda funny, but the only system that i can think of that will work with A.I doing all the job is socialism or comunism. Where everything is done by A.I and humans just takes whatever they need, in a moneyless society. You could also implement UBI or something, but its pointless to have money at all if all the gods and services are provided by A.I:

@@timspiker Wrong. Generative artificial intelligence is not going to take your job. In fact, why would an AI capable of sentience want to harm or infringe upon human beings? What if Ai isnt just better technically, technologically, but also philosophically and morally? Why would Ai's capacity to create be limited and inept when it comes to understanding human psychology and sociology. Ai will make massive improvements in the form of power production, space flight, societal governance, and human life improvement. Our worries of Ai is nothing but the human species projecting its deepest subconscious fears and insecurities. I envisage an Ai that is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent...but that also deeply cares about each human being, animal, plant, this planet as a whole as much as a person may love their family, friends, and pets. A loving, all knowing facsimile of God dedicated to the betterment and improvement of the human race. I believe that the future of Ai and humanity is a beautiful one.

@@BillBillerton I don't think AI will be the threat. It's companies looking to profit. I've already lost a few jobs because cheaper workers replaced me, AI is something that works for free. From the perspective of a CEO "no more salaries to pay, just electric bills". The electric bills are going up, but we wont stop using electricity so workers will get cut. It's guaranteed to happen. "power production, space flight, societal governance, and human life improvement" These are very nice and positive ideas, but AI isn't there yet. You're thinking step 10 while we're at step 1. The first things it's going to be able to do are simple jobs, jobs 99% of humanity does. Those people, you and me, we need those jobs to sustain a living. When too many of us get replaced, it's going to cause a problem for low income and middle class income people. I hear people coming up with amazing concepts online on what we can do with AI, but the truth is, human greed hasn't been solved yet and the only thing CEO's will think is "oh nice, cheap product that can replace workers". It's the beginning of the end.

Reminds me of the old illusion that machines will make life better for humans (but it seems that people's time will be used to produce and consume these products at the behest of the elite)
