I 100% love how you take people through your design process and often follow up with redesigns based on feedback. So many people think you have to get something perfectly correct on the first try or it's a failed project. So many times the "failures" are just the iterations that led us to what ultimately succeeds. And those times they don't ultimately lead to success, they still teach us what we can and can't do with our current skills and tools and may still generate ideas or new skills that can be applied to future projects.

At the very beginning, when you admitted "it came to you in your dream and you couldn't sleep for 2 hours" rang truer and more relatable than I ever thought. I am barely beginning my woodworking journey and when last year I got my first palm router, I woke up in the middle of the night with an idea for how to use it when creating the very first zero clearance plate for my tablesaw. Made it happen the next day, just as you did - nothing written down, because everything was just so clear in my head. Thank you for reminding me of that feeling!

Nice, you really packed some tools into that. I agree the center hollow space could work. Maybe with a hinged side, but the taper (attractive as it is, adds complexity to your build.) Dust can be a problem with open storage. Not sure what’s on the floor, but you could build pivot shelves right to the floor on a strong stable base using a large 18” lazy Suzan center and with Rolling Ball Universal Transfer Bearings around the edges . I have most of my drill press accessories on a 2’x2’-5’ tall pivot case. Mine is like a set of 10” deep shelves front with deeper shelves behind at 90° it holds tools on 2 sides with a curved back allowing it to sit closer to the wall. The shelf is heavy but it will turn 360°. In use, it only pivots about 45° to 90° since all the regular use storage is accessible on the 2 faces.
@startmaking112 күн бұрын
You are spot on. Straight is the way to go. Love the sound of your build too. Really effective.

I have a simple question, why don't FB woodworkers match up cut lines on their layouts to save on materials and time? In other words, overlap cut lines like we were instructed in woodshop in High School, I was the woodshop Forman for a quarter.
@startmaking116 күн бұрын
It's a great plan to be honest. I never did woodshop , not that it is an excuse but I am still very much learning as I go.
@CeeJayThe13th16 күн бұрын
It's for accuracy and to allow for the blade kerf. If your layout lines are shared by multiple components, then one piece is always technically on the waste side and won't necessarily get the best cut. And all blades have some thickness so if you're cutting exactly on a line then you're losing some material on each side of that line. This is going to make components slightly smaller than what you carefully planned for and laid out. That may not matter for some projects but it definitely can for others. And mistakes tend to compound over time and further processes. For instance, if you cut exactly on your layout line with a tablesaw with a 1/8th" blade kerf you're losing 1/16th" on each piece on every line. And then you're going to sand those smooth, losing even more material. This will matter over a complicated project since it's not going to happen uniformly across pieces and you might have very precise measurements that you're trying to achieve. Modern wisdom tends to say that you cut outside your line and then tune exactly to the size you want by other means. The method you mentioned isn't wrong by any means but it just may not be precise enough for modern woodworking.
@dkohler522615 күн бұрын

How about storage on the ceiling? Make a drawer box that you hinge in one end on the ceiling. And then you can probably get some sort of hardware that will help you “fold” it down from the ceiling, and then up again. Attatch a drawstring of some sort to pull it down. You don’t need to see what’s in the box, but you would maybe draw or write on the bottom of the box what’s in it.

Definitely adapt your design to include an access😊 door tothe inside. You can put plain cleats on the two walls topped with a tringle bit of counter to mount this rack thus opening space below. Finally I see no need to slope the sides. Planes could be hung the way simple sliding panels are hung with a deep slot at top and a shalower slot below to drop into. Magnets and twist cleats would manage the rests.

Dont think I dont notice just how much you spread around this woodworking space. We have the same taste in YT channels. I bet all of the other makers appreciate your positivity too bud. Take care.

My brain is too foggy on Saturday mornings to try and guess, so I just watched to the end. Great innovation! I am going to make a version of this when I build my workshop this Spring. Always happy to see when a new video of yours comes out, Mark!

A lighthouse? My guess is a clamp rack but lighthouse seems more fun! 4 minutes 19 seconds in. Brilliant and glad to admit I was wrong. I did notice the lack of plane blade screw driver holder. LOL. 2025 off to a fantastic start. Thanks Mark. Really looking forward to the next install/video.
@startmaking115 күн бұрын
A lighthouse would be more fun for sure. Slightly less useful in the workshop lol. The plane screwdriver was planned to go on but I didnt want to drill into it to add a magnet. But it has found a home and though it wont be in the next 3 videos as they are filmed. It will be interesting if you spot it after that. Sounds cryptic, it's not. In truth I have been given 3 gifts so far, all different, all homemade and wonderful. And I want to do them justice. Kind of a display but also one I can get to as I use yours all the time. Take care bud.

@@startmaking1 I think your videos are fantastic Mark and I am really looking forward to this year being full of them. I enjoy nipping into the shop to copy your ideas and play with the concepts in my hand tool world. My current build is hitting a snag with the maths side but I am getting there, although it has taken me 3 months so far and I still haven't solved it completely. More later on that one. All the best Mark and take care too.

@ianpearse4480 maths, oh yes, my nemesis lol.
@ianpearse448015 күн бұрын
@@startmaking1 This work around will/could eliminate a large amount of maths in woodworking. I may have just cracked the concept for the 3rd part of the build, one quick check and test and I might be off. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nice Design Work! So the simple fix for your only Sharp Edge Forster Bit Problem; could be, Shaft Magnet Stand Offs'. That way you can just line your bits up as a flat set of rows on your existing space slanted slope.

I like your videos Mark and know the excitement you get from a plan coming together. I saw a two doored cabinet and decided to make one. I still haven’t found a proper use for the second door but the outer one stores my 5” sanding discs. I could email you a photo if you’d like to see it. Keep up the good work. Oh, and I guessed a carousel 🙂🌞

We are very similar in our methods. I have made so many things not knowing what they will really be useful for, just to get an idea out of my head. Brilliant. And thank you. ,
@FuhrChris16 күн бұрын
What you need to add to it would be return to a certain point in the rotation. (The reason for it would be that moment when you are trying to remember where you put a certain tool that tool is on the outward side of the circle (not up against the wall)) This can be done various ways with either springs or weights. The weight method is you attach a cord under the bottom or in the middle top that pulls on a grooved pulley. There would be a hole in the bottom (alternately: a hole in the top that goes to middle (it hides the weight)) And through the hole you run the cord that has a weight on it (a spring will also work) The weight or spring pulls the cord which will line up with hole at the bottom causing the tower to return over and over again to the same tool facing the middle of the room.

13:50 -- guessed it was an ancient, wooden Dalek 14:00 -- you revealed it was a rotating hand tool carousel Very nice, and I agree about the Forstner bits (and router bits, etc.) Maybe a separate, pull-out case for those?

0:49 best guess at this stage is a wall mounted lazy Susan storage thingy in the shape of the donner kebab on the rotating grill in the kebab shop as they slice strips off.😂

Very nice build and great idea. While the tapered panels look great, straight would be a lot less math and more space per panel. Straight panels would, also be easier to open when hinged and stay open, to get thing in and out. The lazy susan really great. Smooth, built in, bearing surfaces and no post in the middle, to take up interior space. If hinging panels, hinge two, adjoining, panels on opposite sides, to provide more space, to get things in and out. Whoops: Straight sides would also make it easier, to make a longer unit, for more tools and storage. A very adaptable design. 👍👍👍👍👍👍 😁✌🖖
@startmaking112 күн бұрын
Straight is a far better way for sure here. Easier and well just better. Love the idea for the best way to hinge here too bud. Thank you. Love the thought. As always.

I was close! Guessed around three minutes in that it was going to be tiered storage. Might actually try this one just for the stupid amount of hand planes I have!
@startmaking116 күн бұрын
It would be really cool with loads of planes. I have to say I would potentially label the areas some how. U have 2 no5s and one is for my shooting board, the other for general use and now I have to pause and think before I grab the right one.

Great video and i might at some time build one. The one thing i am going to make is the fence sled that you showed for cutting the angles on the table saw. That is a very useful addition. Thanks for showing us your ideas and keep it up.
@startmaking116 күн бұрын
Thank you William. In truth I think I would have struggled with this build without that sled. And you can always replace the dove tail clamps with normal t track clamps or other hold down options.
