Make sure to keep track of everything that can be a deduction on your taxes, as most gig jobs will have you fill out a 1099. You can claim deductions for mileage, per diem, business expenses, and more!

Thanks for bringing this up I can see it's received a lot of attention. The only thing with taxes is I don't want to give you incorrect information as I'm not a tax professional or CPA . I'm an expert in what I know and don't pretend to be a tax expert, hope you guys understand. When it comes to taxes for the past 2 years I've done Turbo Tax self employed, they just ask you what 1099 income sources you have, you'll list gross revenue then corresponding mileage. They'll also ask if you want the standard mileage deduction or itemized deduction and you'll follow the respective prompts.

Another important thing to consider is where the drop-off will leave you...sometimes I get decent orders that take me to areas that are purely residential, with no restaurants around...so I have to drive back to an area where there's a probability of orders...so I am "riding empty" as truckers say. Important to consider this.

I pretty much decline all drive through orders now, especially if it is a red card order. I will only pick up from fast food places where I can walk up. The only exception will be Chick Fil A, which they bring out when you arrive. They are usually pretty good but I did have a couple instances where I ended up waiting 20 - 25 minutes.

Yooper Author no, I’ve had 5 food businesses- all successful failures- now I’m 60 and so many men are humping their butts to chase that delivery for one more dollar when if they had the guts to go get the stoopid franchise and run it themselves. Franchises are BEGGING for new owners, as long as your LOCATION fits their agenda. Chic fila only wants $10,000. I’ve spent over a million on my failures. So why not give these men the push that they need.

The problem is where I live we never ever get more than 2 dollar peak pay and it's usually only 1 dollar and doesn't happen very often. We simply cannot make that kind of money here. The tips always suck and we are forced to take 5 and 6 dollar orders because that is about 90 percent of the orders we get 5 percent are lower and don't get accepted and the other 5 percent are the occasional 7 and 8 dollar orders

I would love to see a video that walks me and talks me through a full door dash after the fact... so record it in the moment, leave that hard to focus background music out, and talk me slowly through the process of an order coming in - what do you look at, what helps you to decide whether to take the order or not, what are the things you consider? Once you take the order, talk us through the details of how the app works from there. My first order took me forever to figure out how to do everything in a timely manner and I ended up getting tagged as not having delivered it on time, when in fact, I had delivered it at least 5-10 minutes early. Also, where do you put your purse? Some of the areas I deliver to are not the most trustworthy and full of character, integrity, and respect. I worry about my purse when I jump out to run a delivery up to a house. Things I found hard to figure out on my first day dash today: 1. How do I look at the screen and know whether it is worth my time and drive? 2. How do I know what the full amount of miles will be? 3. Once finished, do I drive back toward a hotspot to pick up another delivery or stay where I'm at? 4. Is there a way to tell where I'm being sent ahead of time? (I live in Indiana and it sent me across the border to a rough neighborhood in Illinois today. I grew up in a neighborhood like that and I know what goes on. I was not prepared and should never have been over there.) 5. How do you go into the app and send the customer a text? Are you doing this through the app or through your own text message? 6. I actually live in a rough and unsafe area... How do I drive to a safer area where I can work? Do I have to find the hotspot or can I just go to the area and then pick up orders from there? 7. What app or process do you use for tracking mileage, vehicle maintenance, etc? 8. I know I'm missing some things. For a type A - Highly sensitive personality and a total introvert (functional introvert but nonetheless...), I was a little overwhelmed with it all. I wish I could have had time to play in a "test" version to really learn my way around the app and figure out how to navigate it but because they don't offer that, I need a video that at least takes the time to show these things - and preferably, a previously recorded dash that has been gone back through and voiced over to explain everything...

One tip I have is if you can, work the hallmark holidays during the day. Fathers day, mothers day, valentines, admin day, boss day, etc. I worked mothers day last year (my mom lives in a different state) and I averaged $70 an hour on a four hour shift. As for taxes, use a tax program. I use tax act and while I declared 5700 last year, I paid zero taxes on my doordash side gig.

Just a note is very different in Columbus GA, snsllish town not CALI, so when you mention good and bad amounts of money, it is all relative to one's area. I loved your idea of a spread sheet comparing peak pay to non peak pay. I also have been finding that Saturday is so saturated with drivers that I do much better during the week. Even though the orders tend to be for less, the resteraunts are much quicker, less backed up. And more orders because there are less drivers.

To be honest, I don't like the shopping with the card or even the items to purchase with the card on the drive thru because it takes too much time. Although just watching and listening to your videos helps me out alot to try and make more money on a weekly pay. I try so much to not take the low paying orders because it takes too much of my time, when I should concentrate on the bigger payouts as you have mentioned. And I took the part the part when you said that a Hotspot does not really give you something to deliver. I've tested it and that is so true. With Doordash they will not give me a delivery right away until I have confirmed the deliveries. Uber on the other hand gives me deliveries continously even before I confirmed a delivery which Uber really keeps me busy throughout the day, nights, and mornings. Thanks again for your videos and tips.

Question is are those who complain about everything doing anything to learn how to do it better and make more money? I see a lot of people who get into the gig economy who are JOB minded, and then they don't understand why they don't get benefits, they don't get all the stuff that one gets with a job, but what job will let you sign on and work when it is convenient and not work when say like tonight I had a migraine. I think these job minded people just want to show up and do whatever and expect to make the same money as people who work harder at it and study and learn from those who go before them.

@@RiverWoods111 OK, I'm saying not everyone makes the same amount of money. Even if you try very hard to get orders, its up to Doordash to distribute the orders to the driver. Not that I would know who they are! Even the apartment complexes I deliver to are very expensive to live in. I still hear a lot of people complaining, and if an area isn't profitable then I would find another gig. I am just using this to fill in while I am getting my Freelance Illustration work back up and going. The nighttime gigs really leave me free to design all day before I go out for a few hours. Where I live I have to figure in round trip miles, that is what really counts. I don't live in a sprawling metropolis like you. I live in Lees Summit MO. Let me give an example of orders I reject: say I get an offer of $13 for a 10 miles dash. I have to reject it. 10 miles takes me outside city limits. At this distance I never have another order in that area when I get there (OK, one time I did but it lead me even further away from my city). Let me show you the math for this. Round trip miles is 20 miles. At 60 mph that would take 20 minutes. But, I am not driving highways I am driving through town at 25 - 30 mph. At 30 mph 20 miles would take 40 minutes, now add in time at stop signs and stop lights, about 10 minutes. Now it is 50 - 60 minutes and a full gallon of gas at $2 a gallon. Now the math again: $13 -$2 = $11 for one hour of my time and 1 hour wear and tear on my car. This is a bad offer and Doordash does it all the time and penalizes me for not accepting them.

The only thing about that is the risk you take for relying on the customer to tip. At the end of the day you’re doing what you signed up for.

The problem I've come to recently is that I've had to contact customer service unassigned orders at times when I didn't get a chance to see how long the drive was because the app started glitching up and I didn't want to miss it. they tried to get me to drive from South lake Tahoe to Tacoma which is on a Friday night an hour each way 33 mi each way for $17 at a Safeway. Then I got another order for a 13 Mile drive for like $7 and I wasn't paying attention and could not assign it. I started watching some door dash videos videos and realize that cherry picking is probably the best method instead of accepting every order that comes through. after I started doing this I noticed that they started to give me a lot of three and four and five dollar orders literally seven to ten I've been a row and I have been putting me in pause mode every 30 seconds until I and my dash just to get me off of the platform and signed out. They've actually signed me out several times during dashes when I minimize the window.

Thanks for watching Jonathan, tricky because I notice a few things there. Firstly of course make sure to pay attention to the order request screen so you don't accidentally accept sub par orders. Second as you continue to dash you'll pick up on market specific averages. What I mean is maybe a $8 payout is the highest it typically gets there, maybe $7. Regardless that dollars:mile is key. As far as the time outs also drive on other platforms if you don't already because maybe DD just isn't that strong in your market for drivers. I wouldn't lower my pay standards, I would continue to ignore low payouts which is good

Definitely agree with the higher peak pay = less gross per hour/per shift. Live over in hawaii and if I see the 4.50 pay bump I generally wont go because it feels like the app offers more money per delivery to validate having an excess of drivers in a location that is assumed to be super busy on that day? So you will be sitting a lot more often, I usually see quite a few people hanging out in hotspots waiting during those bonuses. Peak pay should not be counted in your picking a delivery. As in peak pay is $3 and you get one for $9 at 5 miles. That means your tip may be as low as $3-4 so not worth your time. Now $3 peak pay and the delivery is $12 at 5 miles is gravy. Tip may be at least $5-7 we go through a lot for low tips. Tips are how we make our money DD does not give great paying deliveries so we have to make sure the base pay, and tip is more or the same as our lowest acceptable pay without the peak pay. But if no orders are coming through $10 is $10. We all have our choices of what we take or don't take.

Hi Chris, when you finish an order outside of your scheduled zone the app should still show hotspots but only back in your scheduled zone. If you're too far away from this scheduled zone however the app may not show any hotspots.

I calculated $21/5 in my head and came up with $4.25. I was wrong, but still close enough.

What software do you use to edit your videos? I don't do red card orders and never work past 8pm cause it's always fast food and 3rd floor no tip

I’m sorry I am new to DD . Is the amount showing how much the order is? Do you have any tips for a newbie that isn’t that tech savvy ?

Hi Christina, yes the amount that shows on the order request screen is the minimum amount you will earn on the trip. I would check out my DoorDash playlist for more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGa8en6Vm5WjZsk There's also a 20% off flash sale running for my Mastering Delivery course until 10/4 if you want to grow faster: www.yourdrivermike.com/delivery (Use Code: dominatedelivery) Thanks!

You would hate Cincinnati. If you decline orders less than 1.50 per mile you would probably get 5 orders in a 8 hour shift

my sister does ubereats she finds esp at night cause its harder to get food delivered in that neighborhood that downtown in our local large city has very high tips. i went with her last night and i went wih her cause she did the late night shift for the first time down there. and despite most the orders werent going but 2 or 3 miles on any order ( i think the furthest we went was 5 miles) almost every order was around 10 dollars. we also went to the mcds beside the main hospital 4 times and each time it was at least a 15 min wait

I'm dashing now made almost $100 in six hours. First hour and half made $40. I'm at $80 in earnings without any possible tips they may pay later. Door dash I can always count on. Going try GrubHub real soon.
