A sensible commentary about an nonsensical object. To me, Rolex submariner represent the unassuming simplicity in perfect proportion that achieved grand recognition through years of unwavering adherence to its design and craftsmanship philosophy. Hypothetically speaking, even if someone somehow had acquired the foresight into the future, they wouldn't have the discipline to stick to the formula. But Rolex did, so did Coca Cola, and Apple to some extend. The hype, the marketing craze and the association with shallow vulgar snobbery and greed are the by product of human psyche when faced with something of value. Is gold evil? No, gold is just gold. Is Rolex bad? No, Rolex is just Rolex. The way people react to these objects shows more about people than the object itself.

4:02 It was actually 40.2 to 40.5. they rounded down to 40 on the one and rounded up to 41 on the other. The size difference isn't that big. The bigger difference was the shape of the lugs, the fact that the bracelet is wider, and that they updated to the new 3235 movement.

3:24 "My guess is that each of those sleeves cost more than most of the watches in the world" - I'm sorry, but that just made anyone involved in engineering or manufacturing who listens to this either spill their coffee, or getting ready to sell ceramic sleeves to gullible watch enthusiasts. Those are literally cent parts, bought in bags of thousands for a couple dollars, used in all kinds of machinery where a (more expensive) proper bearing is either cost-prohibitive, too large, or facing adverse conditions - little water-pumps for example. The actually more expensive bit may be machining the links. If they're truly fancy, they end-mill them to a defined depth, so they only go in/out one way - I suppose they simply use a larger through-hole and leave them supported only by the bolts and outter links - which will work totally fine). Nothing at all your existing machinery couldn't handle, but obviously more machine time=cost. Which I very strongly presume is best expressed in cents per link.

The price of Rolex now and the hype, meh, I'm done with Rolex... I used to love the brand, have an OP and an Explorer, but now I just find Rolex exhausting and the people that focus on the brand tedious, one dimensional and boring. The sub is absolutely not the principle of dive watches lol...it's not even close to being so. Same with all of the Rolex models, they are nice, but you're kidding yourself if you think Rolex are the pinnacle in any category.
@pistonburner64482 жыл бұрын
I don't blame Rolex (much) for the situation. I respect them for not short-sightedly trying to desperately increase production to chase demand. I just hope the people who bend over backwards (at least I hope it's only that way...) and go through the ridiculous circus and cost to get a Rolex don't expect people to revere them for having that thing on their wrist. I'm happy for them if they're happy, but the reputation of Rolex wearers at least in my mind is gullible fools (to put it mildly) who have grovelled and been through a totally undignified hazing BEGGING to get that thing. People don't usually look up to people who grovel, beg and dance for others. I get that they think it's worth it to get a nice watch and the resale value backs it up in a way...but not in the luxury or watch excellence sense. It's not luxury to have to dance and beg for the chance to buy a watch. I think of it more like obsessed base ball card or model train enthusiasts hunting down some rare piece which will be revered by a handful of people in their community of enthusiasts. It will have that actual high monetary value. But not as a fine object, and not as luxury. Not as fine watchmaking. Only as scarcity...and that can bring negative image. Even worse is the fools who buy them at massively inflated prices in the grey market!
@WatchUnwind2 жыл бұрын
Hand in hand I think my omega seamster is higher quality than my Rolex OP just visually looking at the level of finishing but the Rolex is designed better in the fact the the bracelet is better the watch is better balanced on wrist and more comfortable
@Watchlover3712 жыл бұрын
@@pistonburner6448 buddy I appreciate your sentiments but please don’t think that everyone who is fortunate enough to buy rolex at retail has to grovel or beg or otherwise demean themselves. My ad is a very good friend of mine - watches are one of the things we have in common and I am supplied a steady stream of all the watches one could want from rolex. Absolutely nothing undignified about this - just an organic friendship which started outside of watches and transgressed into me being sold watches. I appreciate I am lucky and that for many this is not the case but I think it’s always best to stay away from sweeping generalisations
@pistonburner64482 жыл бұрын
@@Watchlover371 Well, that strengthens my message a lot: maybe you really are friends, but many others are 'friends' with their ad. And in either case the key to that 'friendship' is constantly giving the ad lots of money, and that long and very expensive process is how anyone is in the situation that they can buy Rolexes. The cost you have to go through to buy a Submariner is not the price of one Submariner but instead it's years of spending, tens of thousands to be able to have access. Generalisations work really well when they are totally in lock step with reality, and I am sure mine is totally accurate. Generalisations can be true like this one was, despite one single anecdote like yours. It was actually probably strengthened by it since you yourself prove that your situation is very unique and others don't have such an arrangement. I'm really glad that you as a Rolex fan are able to buy the timepieces you wish to buy from an official dealer! It would really be unfortunate for a Rolex fan to have to consider grey market, or have to be without. And I say 'Rolex fan' as you probably are such, though the same applies to most watch fans in general since Rolexes are such amazing products and the company is so respectable in its integrity of watchmaking and product strategy that the overwhelming majority loves their products and what they do. As I've said here and elsewhere, I have no beef with the company. Massive demand created the situation and there is no better reaction I can think of (other than them tackling the alleged corruption leading to grey dealer sales or assuaging the suspicions of that being widespread and not reacted to enough), it's just unfortunate that everyone can't get what they want every single time they want it...some people just are a bit spoiled with their expectations. And life is sometimes about achieved privilege. I haven't criticised Rolex about the supply issue, I merely like to point out how the situation really is like it is, and therefore people talking about Rolexes as if almost anyone could buy them seems a bit strange. Like: when people just compare a Rolex to some other watch, I think it's a good idea to just tell people that they won't be able to buy one so the whole issue is theoretic. We can still appreciate how amazing Rolexes are, and still make the comparison, but when talking pricing or market comparison it's just as essential as is the crazy resale value if you do get your hands on one! It matters.

I’ve been collecting for a couple of decades now, and have been selling pieces as I get to the core of what I love in watches. After moving a piece that I no longer wore that had appreciated significantly I was looking at what I wanted to acquire. Iconic. Timeless. Quiet. Beautiful. Something for me, and a few others who know what it is. And that was the Blueberry Sub. Something that has been lost in the last 5 or so years of hype beast watch related hysteria is that we collectors always collect for ourselves. Is it nice when someone notices what you are wearing and you notice what they are wearing and you exchange a silent nod or a look. Yes. But is is about what others think or how they’ll perceive, etc? No. I could care less and would actually prefer no one notices. I have my collector buddies to share watches with, validation outside of my crew holds no value. The Blueberry is a gorgeous watch, the 41mm release takes care of a number of things that the maxi case ruined from a design and proportion perspective. Nice video, I’m subbed, keep them coming
