Hey guys. Good show. Always fun However, I feel a duty to inform you of the band that Nin stole the most from. Shock Therapy was an electro-punk band from Detroit not far from where I live. They began releasing music in 1984 and have a tremendous discography. Not to be confused with the rock a billy band of the same name. They took off in Germany early on and even resided there for a while but remained unknown here in the states. I rarely meet anyone who knows of them and they literally lived 20 miles from my house. The lyrics and music is raw and vulnerable, but from a deeply disturbed point of view, no fakery. Not marketable lyrically since he sings about being wrecked from trauma, pissing the bed, crying at night hooked on drugs realistically; unromantic and shameful. Hmm, change it to emo lyrics and trendy it up a bit and we have a product! Unfortunately, Itchy, the singer- songwriter who diarized this brilliant but tortured music passed away a few years ago. I went to his memorial at a bar in Royal Oak and met a slew of ex band members who talked of him carefully as if not to strain my fondness of him. There's a guy called Jimmy Doom who I met there who told the story of how Trent got his band name. You can find it on youtube. At a Shock Therapy show in Ohio some guy rushed the stage with a railroad spike in an attempt to kill Itchy mid-performance. I heard that Trent Reznor was there and was even involved with disarming the man who was in fact wielding a nine inch nail. Well, it also comes as no surprise that the first Marilyn Manson album sounds alot like old ST, Cake and Sodomy biting "No Thoughts are Free" off the Touch Me and Die album really hard. But where Marilyn Manson went on to imitate other forms of music, Trent stayed behind to rumage through the 15 or so Shock Therapy albums looking for songs to sanitize and reuse. Anyway, sorry for the rant but I try to spread the word whenever I can but most importantly I think you would like this wierd band. They are one of my all time favorites and surely are unique

@nemo845 жыл бұрын
@Ray , you have some discography flowcharts out there, to explore the different albums. Each one is subjective in some degree, sure, but they can help a lot. Most are very useful because, like almost any band, NIN has changed over time (a few times). My favorite album is Downward Spiral (cliché!). But I can't choose this album without having a hard time, leaving a step behind "The Fragile" and "Pretty Hate Machine" (each one for their own reasons). I love Broken (LP) too, very addictive to me, and "And all that could have been" it's very fitting sometimes. Everything Reznor did since Ghosts I-IV (2008) until now... well, I'm sorry to say that recent works doesn't mean as much to me. If you want something hard and industrial: "Downward Spiral". Less noisy: "The Fragile". More noisy: "Broken" and then "Fixed". Rock: "Whit Teeth". Something new wave: "Pretty Hate Machine". Electronic: "Year Zero". Instrumental and melancholic: "And all that could have been". Maybe I'm being tiresome! So I'll finish just saying which song made me realize that this band was 'out there for me': The Big Come Down.

I'd consider myself a pretty big fan of NIN, but i loved listening to this - a lot of it is funny and insightful, especially looking back at the 90s goth subculture. "Cringey" is probably an accurate way to describe a lot of it, including Trent's childish rage-quits and occasional bad poetry (the latter of which still seems to be a problem today, e.g. "Copy of a..", "With Teeth") You have a pretty solid knowledge of his work, so I can't fault you for not being exposed to it like a lot of fans I'm sure would. I do think it's a little unfair to say X is a ripoff of Y and then go onto state how it's also a ripoff of Z, and W. In other words, it's obvious that the mentioned bands (New Order, Ministry, Skinny Puppy) have served as notable influences to his music. Each of them brings a different element and each band is very different from each other. Where do you draw the line between inspiration and ripoff? With reference to being the McDonald's of goth/industrial: With few exceptions, industrial-type acts did not break through because they had very little in the way of being commercially accessible. All of those complex sample layers and dissonant strikes, drones, and chords were all a part of the sonic vocabulary of industrial, but clean rock vocals were definitely a differentiator in a field where vocal distortion effects were the norm. Also, if you thought Downward Spiral was too busy and chaotic, it's hard to imagine you being cool with listening to a Skinny Puppy album (although it's cool to name drop them for cred with the goth crew, a lot of their shit is heinously unlistenable). To compare their music to McDonald's is fine, but the analogy only works if you've tasted what everyone else is offering and the equivalent to the industrial genre is a lot of those restaurants haphazardly throwing ingredients at your head and calling it a burger. Anyway, you keep making them and I'll keep watching them. Stay safe.

A lot of the fans of this podcast are exactly the same as Radiohead or tool fans, every episode has at least 3 comments telling people "this is satire, it went over your head". I'm not sure if this whole thing is satire, but if it is that makes me sad because I really am this angry about shitty music, and thought I finally found others who felt the same 😥
@PBL1872 жыл бұрын
I think it's semi-satirical, cos they sound legit pissed or bewildered most of the time, and a LOT of what they say is actually spot on. If you didn't know the stuff they tell you about to be true, it would sound like pure satire, especially for The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Radiohead, Nirvana, Green Day, RATM, The Smiths, U2, Weezer, and Sublime. The facts about ALL of them are actually that astounding. Even as someone who likes songs from most of those bands, I find it baffling and pathetic
@scottbaylo2 жыл бұрын
@@PBL187 yeah, I actually like some stuff from the bands they reference, but I don’t think they could be more on point when it comes to the fans of these (or any) bands being a major point of ruining the enjoyment of their music. I think nirvana fans have to be the worst because of the way they idolize an extremely mediocre band that happened to write a decent amount of good songs… don’t even get me started on “grunge”, it’s awful music from awful bands, and nirvana, if anything, was a punk band anyway. If I’m 100% honest, I think it’s that these people who only listen to the bands who make it to radio (like Green Day, Jimmy eat world, or similar music), think that’s all there is, and only give them a chance because it’s beat into them through repetition. I once heard someone say that weezer was the Beatles of our generation, and that’s probably one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. For one, the Beatles are terribly overrated. And two, that title belongs to the Descendents/All, who are actually better than the Beatles in almost every way. But I guess that’s only the opinion of an extremely opinionated dummy who bases it solely on how the music moves me, so I’m probably not the person to ask

@giftofgab247 That's funny because Trent has admitted that NIN is basically a Ministry rip off. What do you call a band that rips off a shit band? A SHITTIER BAND
@charly60664 жыл бұрын
to each their own but NiN is so much more versatile and Trent truly is a genius imo. yes he's incredibly edgy but that doesn't detract from the quality of his work, Ghosts 1-4 for example is a masterpiece just as much as the downward spiral or the fragile.

Used to be a fan after i turned 17 i was like i dont like this band anymore.. 😂😂😂😂 im 36 now.. Their songs are always "depressing" and negative... After a while it gets old fast Songs seen to be the samething its a fact.That they are a rip off of SKINNY-PUPPY when i found skinny-puppy.. I was like omg!!!! this dude is a rip off sonically.

Lol, I had the same experience when I first heard Skinny Puppy. NIN was just a cash grab to capture "Industrial" fans. The music doesn't hold up over time. Skinny Puppy early albums are still fun to listen to. I never listen to NIN anymore.

@@EvilDeadRecordsVideo Al has definitely squeezed a few great songs out since then, but I wouldn’t put it past you to ignore them because it’s like like panning for gold (more like silver lol) in a river of creative bankruptcy/self parody, bizarre annoying noise, and out of touch half-hearted political messages.

I like the first few releases. The first two studio albums and the first EP between them. After that they went downhill for me.

They just reminded me of Skinny Puppy. Glad you mention this. Complete rip off. Never liked when Trent sings and goes all boy band either. Are you industrial hardcore or N Sync? Do Marilyn Manson if you haven't. Even worse. You mention Trent and a laser pen light incident. Don't throw a bottle at Manson because he'll urge the crowd to beat you up. Also beat up a fan with a guitar watch?v=wrlmTwf-ZyA. Surely assault (if real). Also starts shit with band members. Total dick.

Nice podcast. I used to listen to them with my friend when I was a teenager but I never actually liked their music much. I think this band is lame.
