Led Zeppelin was a brilliant work of marketing art. They came at the right time with the right sound, look and album covers. Stole almost all of their repertoire from not only blues legends but also other rock bands, Dazed & Confused for example was a minor hit in the UK for another artist, that Zep claimed as their own. Add to that they were so bad live, they kicked Grand Funk Railroad, an opening act for them, off stage midway through their set for sounding too good. Yet to this day, over hyped morons will still claim they are the greatest, now that my friends is how you market a product, as said, it is an art!

Totally agree. Zappa was a fad and hype. Some people gravitate to crap just because it's gross or has offensive shock value. His guitar style was dreadful repetition. I had a couple friends love Zappa (plus Yes, Rush) and thought he was like a prophet for unknown reasons. He was outspoken but repeatedly stated the obvious. Nothing original. I like Rocky Ericson and the 13th floor elevators as well as Capt. Beefheart (❤1980 Paris), which is fun and artistic. Zappa was full of "it" and full of himself. Some documentary claimed he came up with the term "Freak out" but he didn't.

I like U2. In general, if not everything they've done. Radiohead are the truly lame ones. They sound like watered down U2. So if you want to blame U2 for Radiohead, I certainly understand. The Clash I love. Even though they and the punks really were as phoney as Henry Rollins. Black Flag made only one good album, and only for the first side. Half of a good album. That's it. And unlike Black Flag, U2 actually influenced music a lot during the 80s and 90s. Most people never noticed. Like Springsteen's "Tunnel of Love" album. The rhythms and loping drum parts are straight from U2. They also influenced Christian rock and pop in the same way as well. A great improvement for Christian music, IMHO. Not that I listen to Christian music willingly, but I did happen to notice. If only the Clash had had the same influence. Oh well. At least no one has to die over it. And speaking of having only one riff, or rhythm. BTO certainly qualifies. No one hated them for that. Fortunately, just like with U2, it's a hell of a riff or rhythm. In fact, U2 is better.

When someone says he plays like Hendrix what we mean by that is he plays rhythm guitar with a lot of double stops and melody lines on the top strings. His rhythm guitar is so much more influential than his lead playing. People often underestimate the power of good rhythm guitar.

Yes! When I hear Hendrix in someone's playing it's always the rhythm guitar part. Not the lead. I mean the Machine Gun solo is one of the best things in recorded history but let's be serious. What was so revolutionary was his songwriting and ability to transform rhythm guitar. A good song without a solo is still a a good song. A song without good rhythm guitar is as appealing as spoiled milk.

You are right about Hendrix. Every time I hear someone how sloppy he is I can guarantee you they never listened to the Band of Gypsies record at Fillmore East. He could be very clean IF he had the right people was rehearsing and wasn't on tons of you know what.
