Good games, not a great TV series (Henry Cavil and Joey Batey were great though) and I hate the books. Since I read the Elric of melnibone saga before I read the witcher books (loved the saga) then played the game before I read the witcher books, I came intro the series with high hopes only to realise everything about Geralt and his world was almost all plagiarised, and that the things i did like only came from the games.

The thing about Geralt is he does take sides, however this sides are just always the sides of the people he cares about, the Witcher code is just a façade, a way to stop people of harassing him into their petty squabbles, try to recruit him as an assassin or worse a spy. By pretending there is a actually a Witcher code he keeps everyone, but those closest to him away and insures an aura of professionalism into himself, so those who hire him to do apply his trade have some modicum of respect for him.

As o Polish person with somewhat close ties to the fandom and being familiar with Sapkowski's writing really well, I can unfortunately say that you are wrong - we do not think of him as our Tolkien and we do not hold him in high regard. Most of the folks really love the books, the games and the lore, but not the person because he just is not a very pleasant person. In fact, he was frequently banned from conventions for insulting press and sexist remarks. THIS IS NOT a call to cancel the guy in any regard, rather a sad realisation that even the best authors can be really unpleasant human beings...

This is the game that taught me to stop "playing" and start feeling a character. The structure of consequences within the game made it impossible to "correct" the "wrong decision" without losing hours and hours of play. That is if you even had a save back that far. Also, there were very few "correct" decisions. Before playing this in '09 I often reloaded conversations in games that didn't go as intended. I'd also either go all "good" or all "bad" so I could take advantage of the benefits that come with each. The Witcher 1 is the definitive point in my life where I stopped doing that. I began living with unintended decisions (even if it was due to bad game design) and I focused on character based choices instead of achievement based ones. Most CRPGs aren't made with that in mind, but I've found my personal overall experience to be much better in the long run. This is a flawed game with flawed mechanics and structure, but easily #1 or #2 on my list depending on my mood. CDPR has talked about plans to revive/re-release this game and I honestly hope that happens. I'm not a a huge fan of that generally, but more people need a chance to experience The Witcher. I can't blame those people for finding the original unapproachable. Even in '09 I barely made it though Kaer Morhen before putting it back on a shelf for months. Only force of will, and perhaps a healthy dose of boredom, made me give it a second try. Best thing I've ever done from a video gaming stand point. 11/10 Will Play Again.

Ohh, a Witcher retrospective! Looking forward to the other two games, with The Witcher 3 being my all-time favorite game. I think the biggest strength of The Witcher 1 is its atmosphere, and especially the music. Man, I just love the music in this game so much! The story is also surprisingly good, I actually enjoyed this more than the second game. It can be clunky at times, but the narrative is great. Truly underrated, and I hope the upcoming remake will let more people experience this game.

Personally ive always thought the second game handles alchemy the best out of the series. No doubt im biased due to the books. Witcher 3 has most convenient alchemy by far but its basically just like every other game. Theres no sense of preparing for a big upcoming fight, u just pop potions mid combat like every other rpg. 2 while limiting and frustrating in some ways really nails that aspect. I grew up playing the first Witcher, and every few years I come back to it still, partly for nostalgia, but mostly because it's still a fantastic game. Many of the younger modern gamers will probably be put off by the old graphics, and even older gameplay, but if you can get past the dated mechanics, it's an absolute gem of a game. The world, the characters, the choices and consequences, they still hold up, and in many ways are better and more creative than a lot of modern RPGs. I kinda feel bad that so many people will never experience games like this due to generational differences. There are so many amazing games that have been lost to time... Fallout 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Deus Ex, Resident Evil PS1 trilogy, just to name a few.

Adults-only reward to a quest in the village area. You need to escort a woman somewhere, and she tells you to meet at the mill for a reward. From then on, "Going to the mill" became my term for all the rambunctious conquests that followed. It's a term I love using, but never can, because it would take so long to explain. I remember Witcher 1 crashing multiple times back then because I was running Windows Vista which was taking up too much RAM so there wasnt enough left for The witcher. It was sometimes crashing when you were trying to save the game, thus losing you kinda the maximum of possible progress compared to random crashes that might just set you back to your previous save, which resulted in me saving the game like every 10 minutes. But still with all the flaws I think it was one of the best games. I had watched a lets play of someone else who was playing it before TW2 came out and after a few episodes I decided to buy it myself. Still one of the games I love the most. I replayed both 1+2 when 3 released as well, and while 1 was obviously very outdated at this point, it was still a lot of fun to play.

After the tale is done, he says the name of the girl was Cirilla. But since Geralt lost his memory, he doesn't recognize the name.

The books would've been a whole lot better if the titular character hadn't been written out of them. 1:42:00 That would be because yennefer was nearly written out of the books even before Geralt (she spent multiple books in a dungeon being tortured because the author forgot about her), and Ciri was a near-unanimously hated character. She was only brought back for W3 because english-speaking fans heard that she was a major character in the books, and went "Where's Ciri?", and didn't accept "no one wants the jailbait mary sue back" as an explanation. Gods, just remembering that awkward scene where she was casting contraceptive magic on herself as a 14 year old... made triply worse because she was considering wooing some 40+ year old.

2:51 I don't know what counts as "the west" in your books (i'd say poland is pretty much a part of it), but the german language version of the first book was released in 1998.

It's quite interesting to hear what you think about Chapter 4. Surprisingly it's the favourite one for us, Polish people as it's the closest to our culture and enviroment. The Murky Waters feels like a typical Polish village, not only from the medieval times but also from nowadays. The river, houses, fields, everything just reminds us about it. Another thing to add is that this whole chapter is inspired by the Polish novel called Balladyna where two sisters fight for one man and one of them kills the other one out of jealousy. Then the rest happens just like in the game, excluding the ghosts part of course, hah. Generally I totally understand this feeling of disconnection as people from abroad may feel completely lost on it and obviously do not get the references.

Does the Witcher remind the Poles of Elric?
@MultiKamil979 ай бұрын
@@jeremycarnes1656 I think some people who know Elric are aware of similarities. I for example didn't know about it until last year or something. We don't really talk about Elric though from what I've noticed on various forums and such.

It's probably similar for all slavs. I'm from Ukraine and it also always felt homey for me.
