Question about setting goals as a Software Engineer. How different were your goals when you were an intern and when you became full time at Google? This is an area I'm struggling with because the goals I set at my current role (this is my first role out of college btw) is to feel comfortable with the tech stack and flow my team uses, but nothing career growth wise like changing roles or moving from IC to manager. I was wondering if you ever thought about them and how you brought these up to your manager, as well as tips when setting goals. Don't know if this may be a good video topic for you haha. Also it would be cool to hear your experience after one year as full time at Google and advice you'd give to entry level professionals!
@yourfriendintech3 жыл бұрын
When I was in college/an intern, my goals were to explore different fields of software engineering to see what field I wanted to pursue as a full time software engineer. I definitely wanted to learn a bit of everything to see what field I enjoyed the most. I really thought I would pursue web development, but after interning, I found that I enjoyed Android development a lot more. My goals as a full time software engineer is to continue learning and to become a better engineer (in all aspects, not just coding). At my work there is certain criteria you have to hit to get promoted - so I'll work with my manager to plan how I can meet the next level's criteria and that way we're both aligned on my goals and I'm aligned on their expectations. My tip for you is to create a weekly meeting with your manager if you aren't already. You can work with them to meet your goals, and you can ask them where they think you can improve. If you don't know what goals you should work towards, you can start with the areas of improvement . I personally don't have any interest in becoming a manager anytime soon, mostly because I still enjoy coding and still want to focus on that. But if you're interested in that path, definitely sync with your manager on how they did it and if they have any advice on what you need to do to become a manager. Hope that helps!! & thanks for the video ideas!

I would recommend you try out free coding resources first to see if it's a field you'd actually be interested in. From there, you can choose to continue the self teaching approach or you can try to find a bootcamp / course program to follow to help you with the career transition. There are apprenticeship programs that help people in your exact situation that you should consider looking into. Here's a link to Google's bit.ly/yfit-google-apprenticeships2

The minimum qualifications for an entry level Software Engineer is: - Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience. - 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms. - 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree. It would be great if u reply me, coz i am preparing for step internship since 6 months.☺
@yourfriendintech3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jay, this was a few years ago so the process may have changed. What you described sounds plausible - if you have great internship feedback you may be able to skip your interviews. The STEP internship interviews are definitely different than SWE intern/full time interviews. I wouldn't say they are "easier", but the expectations are that 1st/2nd year undergrad students have less experience and the interview is adjusted accordingly.
@dcaftv2 жыл бұрын
How competitive was it getting into/applying to the google internships? And would you recommend only doing google internships (for a google career goal) or any one (recommending big tech)? Thanks Jon
@yourfriendintech2 жыл бұрын
It was pretty competitive. Once you pass all the interviews, you have to get matched with a team before you're extended an offer. The process took a few months. I would actually recommend you intern at different companies to get a feel for different cultures and environments. I have only interned at Google, and I really love working there. With that said, I have no experience with other companies so I have nothing to compare it to. Internships are a great way for you to explore different teams/projects/companies without having to commit to full time, and I wish I took more advantage of that.
