A couple of points I would like to make. First (and as always), Dr. Chung makes excellent points here. I saw Dr. Chung for the first time on a video consult, after which he became my regular proctologist. I live close enough that I can go to his office. Second, I learned that he takes a very 'regular guy' kind of approach. He does not hide behind grand words and self-aggrandizing doctor-speak. he represents a medical practice mind set that I wish was far more common.

Had a fissurectomy 15 weeks ago. My proctologist said I’m 100% healed now. I’m seeing Dr Chung says soft but my proctologist said you want your stools to be hard like a tootsie roll. Kindly, could you run this by Dr Chung and see how much he laughs or agrees? My doctor is a good surgeon and good doctor but he sees his patients for like 3 mins and leaves. Doesn’t give much info.

@theeradic5629

@@Jimmy_The_Goat I would say it worked. I would have targeted I didn’t have to get the surgery but the cardizem cream wasn’t working well. The only thing that worries me is that sometimes I still can’t sit for as long or comfortably as I could before which is inconvenient because I drive for a living. I still have to wipe a certain way which is different than before. I still get itchy from time to time. Nothing feels the same which sucks. However, I still feel the surgery was probably necessary and it did ease the pain immediately. Doctor said I’m 100% healed. When I exercise, i.e. play basketball or push ups, I feel most comfortable after that. So maybe I just need to strengthen the area properly. Idk. It worked. I would recommend it. Just make sure you have a great trustworthy doctor. Took about 2 weeks for real relief after the surgery but it was less painful immediately after compared to the unbearable pain I was in prior.

Dear Doctor Chung! You do not know how much your videos helped me. I had been suffering from anal fissure for the past 4 months. I am at a stage where it has healed 90%. I feel no pain and blood stains. Just slight discomfort, though. A lot of times, I had severe pain. So much pain for up to 12 hrs every day that sometimes I even got suicidal thoughts. Your videos made me learn about my lifestyle mistakes. I started owning my pain and have taken steps to be healthy. Dr Chung! I can't thank you more. Your videos not only give remedial ideas, they are also a way to get psychological relief from the depressive mental pain one goes through during anal fissures/ hemorrhoids. Thank you so much on behalf of thousands of patients. To the patients, please keep hope. Good days will come. Meanwhile, keep steering your lifestyle towards health. All the best! 🙂

Dear Dr Chung, I want to first of all thank you for your consultation a few months back that really changed my attitude towards my problems with my fissure. Your channel gives me so much positivity and hope that when I get my flare ups I'll have relief. I admire your transparency and a lot of the things you say hold a lot of truth, particularly the fibre intake being a unique thing to each person. Moreover, I think the kind of fibre is also very different depending on each person. I have found a lot of relief from fruits that get me going a lot more than vegetables do. Fruit is so demonised because of its sugars, but I think people forget how wonderful it actually is for the gut. It's what you said - everyone is completely different and should experiment with their diets. I have found food/poop diaries to be extremely useful!! Again, thank you for talking about a subject that a lot of people suffer in silence with. I hope your channel continues to grow and grow (I'm sure it will), and that you continue to give us not only good information, but pretty dang GOOD VIBES. Have a wonderful day doctor and thank you!!

I had a colectomy scheduled a few years ago because I had a BM evey 2 weeks and was diagnosed with colonic inertia. I tried just about everything to stop being uncomfortable. I would drink 3-4 liters of water daily and ate my fruits and veggies. Magnesium Citrate didn't work for me. It gave me a lot of gas, made me distended and very uncomfortable. A couple of weeks before my surgery, my friend gave me a bottle of 400mg magnesium oxide capsule and those saved my life, honestly. I now have daily BM. I take about 2-3 capsules daily but now i need to figure out my diet and how to stay regular. There are times where I'll have 4-5 loose stools a day. Or i can go a few days without a BM if I forget to take my magnesium. What it all boils down to is that everyone is different and there isn't a "one size fits all" remedy. Everyone's body chemistry is different and we need to find which formula works for our body's blueprint. But magnesium is definitely a magical remedy for many digestive ailments. It's a shame doctors don't turn to it before prescribing medications.

Now, it’s like “clockwork”, I can go every day with perfect softness. Stuff works like a miracle. No pain, no side effects, for me. About two hours after taking it, it’s 💩 time. Of course, it works best, when combined with a healthy diet and lots of liquid intake. Also a blessing for the inner hemorrhoids, that were on the verge of prolapsing due to all the prior straining and long sitting sessions 🚽. Now, all is good, and everything can slowly heal. 👍

I started with 45ml/day for a while, now 30ml/day still works. In a few weeks trying 15ml. This stuff does not get digested or absorbed by your body. Large colon doesn’t like it, attracts water to get it out, which makes stool soft and then makes you have the urge to go. Only thing to watch long term, is possible imbalance of electrolytes which can be checked by a simple blood test, which I have done twice a year. Definitely less dangerous than those stimulant laxatives. Works for me, hope it works for you. Only side effect, In occasionally have is bloating/gas. Greetings from Ohio, USA, Marco

@@rachangoudapatilnidoni5058 My gastroenterologist said it is fairly safe, so even pregnant women can take it. Your body does not digest it or absorb it. Large colon gets irritated by it, absorbs fluid and softens stool, which then makes you go to the bathroom. A dosage too high manifests in diarrhea. A dosage too low manifests in constipation. Only long term, electrolytes should be checked which a simple blood test can do. I have this checked twice a year. My only occasional side effect is bloating and gas. If you want to wean off, just gradually reduce dose. There are no withdrawal effects, just constipation might come back. Drink plenty of water, have a good balance diet and add some exercise to it. Certainly much safer than chronic use of stimulating laxatives. I am not a doctor and I am just writing here what my gastroenterologist told me. Hope, it works for you. Thank you Dr. Usually people approach surgery after all other methods have failed or after days and weeks of excruciating pain. These tips can help people who have not yet reached the point of no return. I was housebound for almost 3 months, unable to get to work, on strong painkillers and on a very strict diet and nothing helped me except the surgery.

I am considering the same..I have extreme piles itching from the past 5-6 months...I don't eat spice ,processed food, sugar, oily food..just home cooked bland meals with fruits yogurt,..also eat phyllium husk everyday...so usually I don't have constipation with all these precautions..have lost weight too because of my simple plain diet...but oh this hemorrhoids itching won't leave me alone..i even take antihistamine tablets most of the days..it just won't go away...so surgery it is.. I have been feeling so depressed and anxious, my brain has stopped working too...I just want to end this now

@@roadhouse_blues8081 feel you in that department, got my surgery done last Thursday (hemroiddectomy for 2, one internal that prolasped and one external) harmonic scalpel because it was the last option I had. Day 5 after surgery and it has been a journey...( I opted for pain meds that didn't constipate cause Norco always did it) so could be why I'm more pain not sure. Taking ibuprofen 400mg x2 Tramadol x1 and one stool softener 6-8 hrs. Been counting down the days and doing everything I can on my end to make it more bearable, taking miralax too (mainly the bm's). Sitz bath or standing in the shower 20-45 min has been the best for after the bm. Should note that I haven't been able to go everyday (think it's the mental barricade from being scared and don't want to force it either) had bm second day, twice, thankful for that at least. Everyone's experience with surgery down there is diff and I hope yours, if you decide to do it is smoother for you and anyone making that decision. This channel and being able to share experiences with others has kept me going on the bad days and I'm thankful for that! Going to focus on the recovery and the changes to my diet and exercise and finally win this battle. We got this!

I was having issues for 2 weeks, I was going crazyyy I watched this video last week Wednesday and used everything he said and I feel back to normal. The biggest thing I took from this video is DONT sit on the toilet for too long, when you finish just get up even though you feel your not finished. Eat a lot of fiber and magnesium I ate Avocados, berrys, bannanas and a lot of water But main thing I feel helped me the most is don’t sit in toilet for too long long.

A small bowl of bran cereal and almond milk for breakfast and one before bed and a glass of apple juice with each meal, a few yoga techniques like the wind pose for instance, and a massage using an upside down U from the ascending colon to the descending colon works wonders. Sitting with one leg crossed over the other at the knee or higher and switching periodically can also get things moving. As an aside: If you use one of those potty steps to raise your feet, you are doing a modified version of the Yoga wind pose. I have found that raising a single foot, start with left and then lowering it and raising right creates a sort of 'bicycle' twisting action that can get things going. I have a child with autism who has severe constipation, encopresis, etc. Update: Wanted to add one more tip, roll a rolling pin under its own weight (Dont' press down on it!!!) upwards on the ascending colon and downwards on the descending colon side. It helps to breakdown those stubborn clumps that are stuck.

Hi Dear Dr. You are doing a real wonderful job here, advising fischer, hemorrhoid sufferers. I am from India. Since covid vaccination my problem of Fischer got worst(I came to know it after 2nd dose) and now the sphincter muscle is so rigid that every morning I get lot of pressure from inside but due to shrinkage of sphincter muscle I can not get rid of poop easily (which is actually soft) so many times I am on toilet seat and trapped in between passing stool process, doesn't understand what to do and I apply force which results in fischer then more swelling, pain, legs pain. It's a terror entering toilets when you have Fischer. Now a fistula has developed. Literally life is not fun anymore. I am constantly examining myself, my diet. I hope someday I will get real relief. And some food Literally helps you in this. Thanks doctor, I may write you a long letter about my this episode. God bless you. 🙏

This goal is a bit frustrating. I did always like the large (not too large & not pebbles) but cracked type 3 as it seemed I was not constipated - easy to pass & easy to wipe. But maybe a sign I was kind of constipated afterall? Soft is fine IF it's not too large & there is no remaining small soft difficult to pass remnants. These caused me a lot of straining and sometimes were very difficult to clean. HELL and one major cause of hemmoroid flare! I think maybe caused by overdose on fiber, stress, too many electrolytes, eating few but very large meals... I'm not quite sure. I don't want to be constipated but this kind of BM is very frustrating. Soft and large-ish with no remants. That sounds okay. Sending up a prayer and seeking moderation.

I got into a high protein diet for bodybuilding. However, I made the mistake of cutting out the beans and lentils I used to eat as well as removing a veg serving of broccoli that I usually had. Also cut down on my whole wheat grains. All in the name of cutting fat. Well, you can imagine what happened. Stools were VERY hard and after some time, I developed painful hemorrhoids. Funny enough, a primary doctor that I saw was impressed by my overall condition and blood values but he noted that my stool was hard. Frustratingly, he didn’t tell me to put the fiber back in. I guess he thought that since I was in good shape, I knew - but I didn’t! Only a recent painful flare-up made me FINALLY research what’s going on and adding back in my fiber. Also on the horizon for me is experimenting with foods I never tried regularly before: Avocado, berries, chia seeds, mango. The list goes on. I want to try them slowly over time.

@@ksramsheena5973 First meal of the day is a shake: IMPORTANT NOTE: DRINK A LOT OF WATER MIN OF 3L SO THAT FIBER CAN WORK -90g oatmeal -300ml milk 1,5% fat -35g honey -5-7g linseed -15g peanut butter 300mg of magnesium(I would say its important for a soft poop= After that later I eat salat with chicken (150-200g) honestly put that things you like in your own salat. And also I put in my salat 10-15ml oil. Later in the evening: -450ml of red lentil soup (I take it for the calories) (150ml of milk 1,5% fat, 50g cornflakes, but you dont need to add this I just add it for me so I can maintain my muscles or have the power to go to the gym) at night I do another smal shake: -80g oatmeal -150ml of 1,5% fat -40g honey -10g peanut butter After you drink the last shake drink water so that your body can work at night with the fiber of the shake Overall I stick with the food routine, but you just try it out how it works on your body. The fiber intake in this should be between 30-50g, but see how your body reacts on it, maybe you just need 30g of fiber, maybe you need 60. Maybe my food menu is not suitable for you maybe its in general not good, but for me it works better and I can do my passion with is going to the gym. Take small steps when you raise your fiber. Also go for a walk for you mental health, do some sports. Honestly the good thing about a fissure is, that it leads you do have a healthy lifestyle and challange you mentally also to enjoy small things in life. Dont let you get controlled from the pain and your life. Be the one who is in control. Even if its hurting somedays, or weeks, have a routine, look to the left and right and enjoy the small things in life. Always think like "I will heal my fissure and I will get back" Stand up everyday tackle it do what you can do to heal it, search in the internet maybe you have to change your methods. Also one last important thing. When you have healed your fissure, which I know you will, even if it will comeback after years, you can do the same and heal it again. I hope I could help and motivate you a bit! 😊

Do you poop less? I’ve been on carnivore for 2 months now, & I’ve always dealt with constipation but now it’s worse. Do you have any suggestions??

What product can we buy that qualifies as a teaspoon of "fiber" to take along with meals?

You could try psillium husks. A teaspoon in a glass of water with meals.

Dear Doctor Chung! I’ve had chronic diarrhea for three months. I went to a GI doc who gave me a stool sample test. It came back positive for Norovirus. I never even knew I had been sick with that! I just thought it was a severe flare-up of my usual IBS, due to recent stress. I have a colonoscopy scheduled in a couple weeks. For now, could this be post infectious IBS?? My last colonoscopy was three years ago. No IBD found, just a few small, benign polyps.
