I wish I had seen this stuff years ago. I have spent years following NH methods that require you to stop and “fix” the spooking issue rather than solving something in the moment and preventing/controlling it. It meant that I lost out on so much dedicated schooling time because I was constantly stopping to fix the spook rather than working my schooling through it.

Loved this video Tks! I have the same things with my young PRE and this focus and leg yields in circle to bring him back from the spooky moments, has been very useful. I love how understanding you are to him and how important is to get positive results by working consistently, little by little and with patience to our horses natural stages of learning. Again, wow. I love this whole thing, but the ending where you touched on cantering and what you did to relax your horse when he's about to go on the lunge was a real thinker for me. My horse becomes unrelaxed at the canter and the more you restrain, the more he builds up. I've been told by professionals either restrain into a circle or ride it out (neither of which were successful). I've never been told or shown ways to relax a horse though so he is confident in you and willing to keep that canter. I've been doing extensive groundwork and the training scale and have seen great improvement. I really look forward to incorporating this and advancing ourselves. Thank you!

I absolutely loved this! Is it possible to do a video on the canter as a whole, my horse has a habit of breaking the canter or doing long periods of a really bouncy, speedy trot before canter and I would love to learn tips and tricks to keep him going so he can find his feet, and get a nice rhythmic canter etc.

Hi Jessica, if you stay tuned you will see how Alicia progresses Mowgley's canter over the next few weeks and some of these things will come up in the videos! When the horse breaks in the canter it can mean that he has slowed and you havent corrected the tempo, or it could be due to the horse lacking the balance to keep cantering, remember with horses that they find more balance going faster so in the beginning you may need to go a little more forward to help the horse find the balance. ✨

Great question!! Yes for two reasons, the first is because spurs are legal at competitions right up to Grand Prix at an International Level where as whips are not allowed at higher levels and at National level. The second is because ideally you would like the horse to respond to a leg aid rather than the whip. Hope this helps! ✨

HI Anita, Yes! An easy way to work out when to give the aid is to work out where the hindlegs are in relation to your rising or sitting of the trot, so when you sit is when the outside hind is on the ground x

Hi there, yes and yes!! The leg yield on a circle is quarters out but it is made possible because the shoulder does not leave the desired line and also the shoulder is slightly in so there is room for the quarters to sweep out. Yes you could use it to assist with keeping control of the horses body (and mind!) when spooking 🤩

Wow, Mowgley is going very nicely so far. I have a question regarding how you stop a horse in general (not necessarily an OTTB) from falling out?

Great question! Just think of the horses shoulders as train tracks and that your reins control the shoulders and it is your job to steer the shoulders (push not pull) wherever you want to go, the horses head should stay in the middle of his chest always (so he is in balance). When he falls out it means you are not steering the outside shoulder ✨

Hi Sarah, no it is not the same, in leg yield the horse is straight with flexion away from the direction of travel, in shoulder in or fore the horse has bend in the ribcage. Hope this helps x

When he loses forward and head comes up on the straight are you leg yielding then or just more leg on for the forward? My mare does this where her head comes up and she slows right down not wanting to travel forward, should I try the leg yield or jump more forward?

Hi Melissa, use the circle and leg yield in this moment as try to think of - rhythm plus suppleness equals connection!! So when the head comes up the horse does not have enough suppleness in that moment to be able to connect into the bridle. Try this and let me know how you go 🤩

HI Linda, a good way to think when the horse spooks, is not what is he looking at but rather "what have a lost control of in his body" so if the horse wants to move to the left, you need to move his shoulders more to the right, if he slows down he needs to go the same tempo, do the opposite of what the horse wants to do. Hi Alicia 🐴 what to do when your horse spooks a lot, but because of injury you Can only walk? My OTTB has gotten a ligament injury 12 weeks ago and we Can still only walk 😅 while hacking we solved it, but in the arena we are in trouble 😬 he rears and turns around

Hi Emilie, this is a good question and a tricky situation! What you have is a horse that is not "thinking forward" in the walk which is a common problem as the walk has no forward momentum, he sounds like he is also a bit stuck. To solve this you really need to ride forward in trot or canter which you can not do for now so I would suggest just hacking him out for now or hand walking in arena until you can ride him fully and then you can solve the issues in the arena 💕

@@YourRidingSuccess no I don’t think so ,my boy is being too forward and big in his trot and finds extending his trot easier than bringing his weight under him for canter and I’m finding hard to get the balance of activation of his trot so he’s there and listening to my aid vs to fast to get a nice canter transition as he just speed trots the my aid , I’ve never had a problem asking for canter ever outside of the school on hacks etc and getting him to canter outside a school is flawless and second nature but he just isn’t keen to do it in a school

Okay so some ideas for you! Try asking for the canter in an exercise like this - trot a 15m circle then as you get two strides from the wall canter, go for 24 metres (2 letters) and then drop to trot and circle again, then go to next letter on short side and repeat with canter. If he is still rushing you can also try asking for the canter as you go off the wall onto the circle to balance him. Also make sure your aid is correct, I do see a lot of riders that use more of a "trot bigger" aid rather than a canter aid. Its outside leg back (but not holding it on, like a quick "pushing a button" and you do this as you go to sit in the sit phase of your rising trot and same time as you go to sit you move hips back to front like a canter seat (not up and down like a trot seat). Also i been strengthening horse horse right side he the off the track and he only has gone to the left for all his life and i dont think he is strong enought to canter with me on him he either runs really fast or in the transtion goes side ways and i end of falling off

Hi Brianna, it takes time and practise to have the horse more equal in the suppleness, try watching this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nXW1cnywrch1abM where Alicia works on the right canter where Mowgley is not as supple but if you are falling off it is very important that you get help as this means you are not balanced enough as a rider to help the horse.

Also my horse gets really worried about the farrier and my farrier wont do him because he gets so worried that he gets a bit dangerous for him to be doing his feet. He normally amazing especially when i ride. My farrier want him sedated to get him done how can i teach him to do better for the farrier because he fine when i pick up and clean his feet

Hi Brianna, sounds like you need some help with your horse from someone experienced, normally farrier and vets do not suggest measures like this unless the horse is really putting their safety at risk. Do you have help on the ground from someone more experienced?

So i have no idea why he is so bad for the farrier we are gonna try foot leading i think os the name to see if that helps because i can lift and clean his feet and hold it for as long as i want with no problem but he trust me, and with him being off the track he dose show signs that he might have been abused
