In this episode, Alicia lends her FEI trained horse "Gee" to her friend Kate. Kate is learning to ride dressage. She is also very very nervous. Alicia and Kate, show you how to uncover the basics you need to understand, to get on top of your fear.

@@YourRidingSuccess I agree. Love Kate riding. I'm in the same banana boat as Kate :). This helped me understand my own re-beginning riding after an absence of many years. Thank you Alicia. I have to watch a few times to understand what you meant by the hands on the outside and turning the head slightly inside to avoid spooky Gee. Although my body has a lot of memory muscle from my earlier years of riding -- its that potential spookiness that scares me.

It would be helpful if explanations were provided for the terminology you mention. I learnt to ride in a different era and I'm finding I need to look up what certain things mean. Rather embarrassed to say this. e.g. fall in, behind the vertical, etc.

OMG! I am not even halfway through and I have to comment. I am amazed that Alicia is such an advanced rider but can still remember what a less experienced rider does that results in certain outcomes. This is ace! Thank you! I liked when you said how you feel isn’t what you’re actually doing. I tend to tilt forward, so when I sit straight it feels like I’m leaning too far back, but I’m not I’m straight, it’s just muscle memory I guess and I have to consciously think about it

I hope the green riders understand how important their seat and hands are. If aids that are unclear or contradictory shut down an FEI horse.. how much more will a green horse shut down. This is why it is so difficult for a green rider to train a green horse correctly.. you absolutely need knowledgeable eyes on the ground. Who else noticed how much better Gee walked on a longer rein? To me, this is because Kate doesn't know yet how to drive a horse to round and reach to the bit to be able to shorten reins. Simply taking up the rein length caused the walk to lose impulsion and the hind legs didn't take on more carry. This made the trot transition difficult for Kate to communicate. Lessons on a correctly trained horse teaches a green rider so much. Once you feel a horse using its back correctly or stepping into your hands or the controlled power of extended gaits or the lift and suspension in collection.. you will be forever changed...

This was another excellent video- Gee was an absolute angel doing his very best. It just goes to show that even a very educated horse gets confused when a person gets on him and is not at that level. Many times we blame our horses for not being forward enough or round enough when what we really should be looking at is ourselves as riders and at what level we are. Needless to say an educated horse makes a world of a difference in one's progress, that's why I love educating school horses and these videos are so invaluable! Thanks ☺️

Wow thanks Kate for this, you didn't appear nervous of Gee or the camera at all. Great job & Great video. Watching Ges's body language it's like he could sense Kate was nervous and just gave off the most calm energy, like don't worry I've got you. I had an horse that would do that with beginners, he loved beginner riders and would carry them around on his back like they were made of spun glass, but if you got on him and he could tell you knew how to ride and you tried to boss him around, instead of asking nicely he would make you work for every thing and if you tried to show off or be a dick he would pigroot you across the arena to teach you some humility again. He was awesome. Not saying Gee would do that, but I loved Gee's energy in this.

That was great. Kate thank you so much for doing this on camera and allowing us to watch you. Double bravo for that! Sometimes Alicia was instructing using feeling / thinking language, and for people like me, we're like...sure but what exactly do I need to do with my body!? Think round ball, lift lift lift. I'd be thinking all of these things but not actually sure how to translate that to the horse. Also, I think it would really be helpful to have an episode about rein aids and specifically turning and supporting a proper banana. For example, when Alicia told Kate to bring the inside rein closer to Gee's neck when he was counter bent, when her instinct was to open the inside rein. Thanks!

Not even half way through and I love it! I have a super sensitive native pony I collapse as my right pelvis drops and rotates which forces my horse to counter flex against me It causes a battle he get frustrated with mixed messages from my body and I can't figure out quick enough what to straighten which frustrates him more 🤦‍♀️ I have given up in the school with him because he gets confused I get confused and its a mess Hacking he forgives me and I find it alot easier to ride but lessons on him it's a mess He's schooled to at least medium level dressage so with me as a sack of confused spuds on him But this is amazing listening to your descriptions, banana, hide your butt fantastic lesson. Massive well done to Kate what a fantastic girl to allow herself be filmed for this another amazing impromptu filming 👌 Our collie is called Jeffrey haha

Wonderful, how brave is Kate. I have a higher level schoolmaster and we are working on more connection. I also weight and tip more to the right going left at trot and canter, shoulder drops and horse falls in. I am working on weighting my inside leg forward and picking my inside shoulder up and back, while stable in outside shoulder, body positioned left without losing the nice connection. It's hard! Any tips, exercises to correct this? I love your helpful videos.

Hi Laura, Every rider has unevenness in their body - the tip is to work on how even you can become out of the saddle which will then help you to be more even in the saddle. Super video! Thank you for the wonderful video. I didn’t know that there was such a science behind turning the corner! I hope to practice that when I have my next riding lesson. I don’t quite understand how to help stimulate the head pol bend and/shoulders in the right direction of the banana with the relative left and right reins positions. Is there a video on it ?

Great question, if you think of using your reins always in a "push" motion to move the shoulders, never a "pull" motion. And imagine your hands stay always on a horizontal line. We have a new POV camera also so we plan to make some more videos on aids x

As a beginner I learn more from up close pictures to explain what your describing. Your explanations are great but I also need visual aids. Explaining how the reins are gripped and held correctly in your hands and where to place them properly I need an unclose demonstration.
