The building burning in the beginning is a church burning, to add to the sense of going against his religion, in which he usually loves to follow. Going eye for an eye would usually be very against the Bible. Kendrick is from compton The “shit” he is willing to die for is his hip-hop career. He isn’t going to let anyone take him down, because he loves the game too much. While he has a resentment toward his life before, it is still a part of him. He isn’t above the street shit of Compton, so if he has to be street, he still can. I loved your input on art history, I never would have gotten that. The father is teaching the child how to fight, because it is almost a requirement for an inner city youth to know how to defend themselves, and more importantly, how to do it without a gun. Killing a man with a gun, is not as sexy as killing a man through a game of fist-to-cuffs. “Going hard on a bitch” isn’t misogynistic, it is referring to the man he is talking about as a bitch. His element, refers to his rap career. As it pertains to ratings, sales, and pure skill, many would consider kendrick to be on top of his game “Fake my death go to Cuba” is referring to the conspiracy that Tupac (one of the hip-hop legends) faked his death and went to Cuba, because he was too caught up in the fame. Tupac is one of Kendrick’s idols, and his whole “To Pimp a Butterfly” album ended in a “interview” of a previously recorded tupac voices. The scene of him in the water at 9:50, has kendrick drowning in the form of a cross. It is an allusion to him willing to die as a martyr for hip-hop, like Jesus did for our sins. “Most of y’all throw rocks and to hide your hand” refers to the rappers (particularly Big Sean) like to thrown subliminal shots at Kendrick through their songs. They never say his name flat out. Kendrick is saying that, as soon as they say his name in their disses, they are going to receive a (probably lyrical) ass whooping. I love your reactions!!! None of what I am saying is a shot of your analysis skills, it’s just my way of furthering your understanding of the lyrics.
