What's the difference between compression and depression? Compression closes the gaps of emptiness while depression opens them.

Compression can be felt like "oh I cannot move anywhere because the walls are coming at me, and I don't feel free to express my emotions"". Depression is the next step: "I hold back all my emotions and lay on a couch all day, because the world sucks...and the world does not want to see my emotions....and when I do express them...they get mad...because they think I have changed, and because the majority of people don't like change....like Donald Trump, it is better to lay on a couch all day and watch KZbin Videos like this one.

Slight correction: the attack is not the amount of time Curtis waits to dampen down the sound after it crosses his threshold. He starts dampening immediately; the attack is just the time it takes him to ramp up to dampening as much as you tell him to (ratio) from nothing.

An analogy for compression that I like is the one about your parents telling you to "Turn that damn music down!". When mum calls out, you take your time reducing the volume and only cut it a bit (slow attack, low ratio) and then turn it back up as soon as her back is turned (fast release), but when you hear dad stomping up the stairs you practically rip the volume knob off (fast attack, high ratio) and wait till he's out of earshot before increasing the volume again (slow release). Does Derek have parents or is he in a secure unit?

I'm gonna be a nerd about attack time for a minute: the time constants (attack/release) are not how long Curtis "waits before" compressing/releasing. Rather, it's how long the compression/release action *itself* takes. It's essentially how quickly the needle moves.

What is the difference between regular compression, glue compression etc...?
@MrSNEAKFREAK966 жыл бұрын
Pedant Glue compression is a bit of a misleading term. From what I know, a “glue” compressor is usually based on the SSL G-Channel compressor. Its no different than any other type of compression, but it has a certain unique character due to whatever circuitry is going on under the hood.
@sophiebosio81716 жыл бұрын
I think the glue compressor in ableton is modeled after a famous, old analogue compressor from like the 80's, and it has a certain character to it. I've heard people refer to it as smoother and softer than regular digital compressors. A lot of people like to slap this on the entire mix rather than the regular one when they're done mixing, because it kind of "glues" everything together, being a little less harsh than the regular one, from what I've heard.

But, you wanna make sure that samples are dynamic, not limited or compressed, otherwise, this can cause the samples to become squashed and sound distorted. So it doesn't matter if each dynamic has a difference volume.
