HOLD UP. The setup is a TV with it's internal Tonemapping set to OFF, as that would harm the Envy's tonemapping. Then he's switching the Envy On and Off. That means he's incorrect when he says the TV is "using it's internal Tonemapping". No, that means there's NO tonemapping going on at all, and that's why the image is insanely blown out. He needs to switch the Envy's tonemapping to OFF then switch the TV's tonemapping ON for a FAIR comparison. I just tested these same scenes on my Nvidia Shield with Tonemapping ON and OFF, and with it OFF, it looks closer to what we see here. While I know MadVR is awesome and makes a difference, I believe this demo is LYING by saying it's TV Internal Tonemapping vs Envy Tonemapping. I'll upload my quick video showing these same scenes on my C1 with and without Tonemapping.

Unfortunately, the setting on the LG C1 is mislabeled and a bit misleading, leading to a ton of confusion. Unless you’re running in Game Optimizer and using HGiG, the LG C1 is still doing its own tone mapping even when HDR tone mapping is set to off. It’s basically a static tone map with a roll-off that changes based on the mastered luminance metadata that is being sent to the C1. Switching HDR tone mapping to on is the C1’s dynamic tone mapping system, and switching to HGiG will hard clip any luminance values above the maximum peak luminance of the display (around 700-800 nits for the C1). Objectively, HDR tone mapping set to off on the LG C1 is the most accurate both before and after calibration when it comes to HDR10 movies and shows, provided you’re in a dark enough room. I’m not sure what display or settings they were using because I wasn’t there, but if I were to make an educated guess, it does look as though they’re using HGiG or something similar to completely disable the display’s tone mapping.

I think you’re misunderstanding how this works. When Envy is doing tone mapping, the TV is set to stay in the SDR content type. This means that it never gets an HDR flag. When tone mapping is disabled on Envy, it sends an HDR flag which forces the TV to switch content types. This was designed for the specific purpose of giving fair AB comparisons. This was confirmed to be occurring, HDR engaging, and tone mapping being on during setup in the TV. Now, could something be wrong? Absolutely, but we did double check settings and confirmed, multiple times, that tone mapping was indeed on and things were behaving as they should. No one is lying or trying to pull the covers over anyones eyes. I commented on your video comparison you made asking you if you’d like to have a chat about this. MadVR, as a company, strives to be transparent in everything we do. If something is wrong, we want to fix it. If we don’t do something well, we will come out and say it. However, during this demo, the displays manufacturer reps themselves were in the room right next door and saw the demo multiple times and even went through the demo with us. These same envy’s have also been used at MWAVE in side by side comparisons showing very similar results in front of 100+ people in direct 2 projector AB comparisons - 1 projector without Envy and 1 with. Finally, the cover art for this video was actually done by a 3rd party, not affiliated with MadVR, on a different manufactures display, of their own volition without over site by us. Again, if you believe something is wrong, come talk to us. I’ve already reached out on your videos comment section. The first time it got deleted, I’m assuming due to me including an email link, and the second time to reiterate. If there is something wrong, we want to fix it, so let us know and communicate with us. We are open to dialog and chat. I promise we don’t bite. :) Feel free to email, call, or text me. ryan@madvr.com (301) 200-2324

@@andrewskaterrr no no. I’m not worried about the video. I think it’s a perfectly acceptable rebuttal. I want to, as much as you, make sure that everything is fair which is why I think communication is so important, but, in no way, want you to feel like you need to do anything as a result of said communication. One thing to consider here is that the camera could be doing some tricky things with exposure and other settings creating a misleading visual stage. Cameras are not ideal for things like this and can lead to some unforeseen situations. Is that what happened here? I’m not sure, but it’s a possibility. I remember the horses looking bad on the TV at the show, but how bad, I can’t exactly remember. If you’d like to chat, or have a private demo of envy, feel free to contact me and we can go over things. I think knowledge and understanding are 2 of the most important things in our industry, and because of that, I’m happy to share anything I can.

What was the TV and source player used for the tonemapping tests? I would agree with others commenting that it seems extreme and probably the TV was not calibrated or configured with optimal settings. It would've been nice to see a fair comparison. Otherwise, no doubt MadVR has amazing features and endgame status.

Yeah I have to to say that before and after with the tone mapping test doesn't seem like everything is on the up and up. I think the big 3 tv brands do a very decent job with tone mapping and the before section they showed seemed like something was wrong, if you showed the same images/scenes on a tv in filmmaker or cinema mode I think they would be more than acceptable to most people and not super blown out like they showed. Now I know madvr is a game changer for projectors if you know what you are doing, the image stretch is an interesting feature for tvs but I would be worried you would lose a good screen % of the movie just to fill the screen.
@JoshuaBarrio

This appears to be an exaggerated example. Meaning the TV doesn't look calibrated at all. So when they switch their madvr on looks 100% better.

@ascendav
@ascendav 2 жыл бұрын
This comparison isn’t fake. Neither the TV nor Envy are using calibrations, but that doesn’t discredit the test. The only things that change are on 1 side the Sony TV is doing the tone mapping and on the other Envy is doing the tone mapping. When we hit the tone mapping disable button on the Envy, Envy sends the HDR flag to the display and has it enable its own tone mapping. Please remember, these Spears and Munsil scenes are very hard for displays to render. They’re 10000 nits for that specific content. I encourage you guys at home to go get the Spears and Munsil 4k HDR disc and see what this horse scene looks at home. Harry Potter is a more real world scenario, but still shows drastic differences in the handling of the mapping. If you guys have seen the MWAVE video on Stop the Fomo’s channel, you can see direct AB comparisons with multiple displays that removes the need for enablement and disablement of envy’s tone mapping. The results in that case were the same. Very stark differences in tone mapping even allowing a lesser expensive projector to crush, in picture quality, a 3x the price display.

Well, yeah it does show what the envy does but also it does not. The camera can and will always influence how bright something appears. A cam is not the same as an eye so the function and general thing u see is true but the percise changes will be diffrent in real life. Also with a processing before the tv/projector you have diffrent settings in the projector as well so just jumping between these scenes on the same tv/projector is not the optimal way to show the effect. It favours the external processor. How much? I dont know. maybe its very slim but the effect is an opening for error or artefact of some kind. You would need 2 tvs one calibrated without processor and one calibrated with processor and make sure they are pretty much of the same quality. Even 2 products from the same type can have quite big diffrences. So its a very difficult thing to showcase but as an explaination what the external processor does. This is a good video. On a Projector its even more effective then on a TV since TVs share the same standards then whats on the disc while projectors cannot possibly match 1000nits and more of output so they need to tonemap everything down to their level of performance. Adding more performance for the calculation on that transition helps. Alot even depending on the solution that was implemented on the projector originally.

Thank you for your feedback. Keep in mind I'm literally looking at a TV with my own eyes, describing exactly what my eyes are seeing in real time and recording the audio and video as I'm doing it. Also, we had the madVR at our MWAVE (MidWest AV Experience) on two 150" screens showing side-by-side comparisons with 90 people in attendance. madVR made lower end projectors look better than MUCH more expensive ones.

Envy offers the ability to crop/zoom and/or to do non-linear stretch. You can do either or do them both. While yes, we do have it set to lose a bit of the image, we do that to share the load in order to minimize stretch. Think of it this way, It’s always best to share heavy lifting load with someone else rather than do it all alone.

I think a lot of you are missing the point on the tone mapping comparison - you don't use tonemapping on a TV typically, you need it for a projector. I believe Richard from MadVR was pretty clear that he was trying to simulate what a projector owner would see, same as when he simulated a scope screen to show the auto aspect correction. The typical use case for a MadVR Envy would be a projector setup not a TV, he was using the TV as an example not to try and exaggerate anything.

If I'm getting it correctly with the envy on a scope screen we have the lens memory always set to be zoomed. That's fine for scope content but when it changes aspect ratio to 16:9 or something taller than scope, aren't we loosing resolution by having black spaces around. Adjusting the lens memory will use all the pixels and light output which is ideal
@ascendav
@ascendav 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is correct, you do lose light and the use of that part of the panel for 16:9 on a scope screen and adjusting the lens would work. However, for multi aspect media, menus, and just ease, the constant fit just works and makes peoples lives so much easier. Think about what happens when you’re watching a scope movie and it jumps to 16:9, when you get subtitles on screen that are now off the bottom due to overscan, and a multitude of other things. Envy just makes that easier.

The tone maping is exagerated to death. There is no way something will look like that out of box, with HDR you want your display to do its own tonemap based on the HDR metadata ... its misleading people here, MADvR should not "correct" or lets say change the colorist intent like it is doing in this example. Because they are basicly saying HDR dosent work if you dont use our product ...its far from true. NON LINEAR stretch ... call it by its fancy name its a zoom ... it cut large part of the picture ( jeez look at the content missing in the edge) and change director intent ... its bad and should not be used. The only nice feature is the fit of 16:9 in 2:40 container to allow 2:40 scene to be in full 2:40 in a movie with multiples aspect ratio.

I love the envy extremes tone mapping ability, super powerful!! Game changer if you ask me. However... I'm struggling to understand the "linear stretch" and subtitle uses? Here's my problems: Linear stretch: it essentially is just zooming the image. My TV and pretty much any tv does this. The downside is you're losing image content. But I don't understand why this is needed in the envy when i can simply push a button on my tv that says "zoom to fill" and it does the exact same thing the envy does. Projectors have the same zoom feature, but instead of losing image content, you're losing image brightness my putting the black bars off the screen. Subtitle issue: I don't understand why there's a need for a black bar, on two line texts the upper text is over the image anyways, so now you have text over the image AND text over a black bar that's covering the image completely, which arguably is more distracting then just putting all the text over the image. It's a feature I think was completely over thought and not necessary at all.

Looks really good. However, what is glossed over is the fact that when you use the "Scope Movie on 16:9" feature, it looks like it's actually zooming the picturing such that you lose content on the both the left and right side.

@@Youthman cool , I'll try that ... the readings are ok but like you I am abit of a bass lover . Its almost as though I can only get the correct/ adequate bass when the gain is 0 dB. Arc brings it down to -6.5......

several years ago, I reviewed the MRX1120 and felt ARC sucked the life out of the LFE. I even sent my ARC to Anthem to tweak. It helped but at the time, I much preferred the bass management from Audyssey. Let me know what you find out:

ARC-g allows customization of the response curve. You can create a house curve, boost bass, and room tilt to adjust what ARC-g initially proposes. Personally, I do not correct bass with ARC-g, but instead use MSO with miniDSP to even out bass response across seating. It’s a bit of work, but you can easily find HT Gamer tutorial here on YT and MSO support at AVSForum - US site. I believe a guy named Jeff has a tutorial thread.

@ Youthman, I’d appreciate your advice. I’m looking to purchase my first projector and I’m interested in buying one that’s 4k, produces good contrast, and detail. my room has no windows so I’m not too concerned about ambience light and I’m not gamer so, I’m not concerned about lag input. Are there any projectors that you recommend that aren’t overly expensive? Thank you for your time.

No one will agree but the truth is madvr breaks the original image and rebuilds to your liking I will never what such bs.. that tv example that they showing is not 💯 true definitely that tv can do much better job on its own. With current tv market most of high end tv can represent 1000 nits as mastered don’t even need tone mapping and with higher nits files can be tone mapped to very good representation without that stupid 12k madvr. Don’t fall for all the things the company says.
