But if you've ever had the chance to see his previous films in 1.43, the fidelity in those shots are unmatched. Maybe he'll make the switch to digital in the future, like Dune 2, and we can have an entire film from him in 1.43

You could say the same thing for any hobby. Why would you spend so much money on a new carbon fiber mountain bike, when you could go to Walmart (probably the same store you go to for any entry level hobby) and buy a $200 steel frame cable brake bike. They do the same thing and the steel frame bike would probably be better if you only do it a couple times a year, but if you do it a lot you will notice a difference and will justify the price.

I think what madVR do is basically cropping the image. Considered the price of madVR equipment(The madVR Envy Extreme MK2 is priced at $15,995 U.S.) and projector($20000) price combined,I would rather purchase a high performance 98 inch TV which costs below 10000 US dollars than buying a projector. TV offers better contrast ratio and brightness whilst projector offers larger screen size. Many people purchase projector because they can set up an acoustic transparent screen which is better for the center channel sound, TV can also achieve a realistic center channel listening experience by placing two speakers above and below the TV fireing to the listening position. So when building a home theater,I am gonna opt for a high performance 98 inch TV for the theater screen.

Nothing wrong with that but 100 inch would not be immersive enough for my preference. You would need to sit like 4’ from it to do so. also, unless you have something like a Trinnov or Storm Audio, running dual center channels is a horrible idea due to comb filtering. Frequencies will cancel each other out. Definitely a bad idea.

I like the idea of NLS, however, I would much prefer the madVR's functionality of automatically adjusting from 16:9 to aspect ratio on the fly vs having to tell the projector to make the change. Appreciate how quickly it does this vs what I've seen with Lumagen.

If I'm not mistaken, without the MadVR Envy in your chain, the only way to have the IMAX shots with grey bars on the sides is if you have your projector zoomed down to 16x9, which would cause that the scenes that are in scope to have black bars on the sides AND the bottom and top. If You are zoomed in so that the scope ratio scenes are filling your screen, then that would mean that IMAX scenes would be over spraying above and below the frame, unless you use the masking feature of your projector.

Without this,,, you can actually alternatively set up your PJ/Screen as 2:40 constant image height and watch the entire movie thst way. You would not avoid black bars on the sides of course for imax scenes but yiu would not worry about bars at top/bottom in wide scenes. You can use the electronic masking to take care of the over spillage of imax scenes up front as part of initial setup.

MadVR started out as a filter for PC video programs and the like, I believe. I run MadVR on my PC here for viewing videos on it. I think it has most of the important stuff but they haven't released new versions in a while - I'm sure all that development is going into these enormously expensive hardware solutions. I'm sure the Envy is a great unit - basically a giant PC with an Nvidia 4080 and in- and outputs for video I would assume (probably somewhat simplified) - but that price is borderline criminal imo. They can charge what they want but it's atrociously priced. But, I guess myself and other budget challenged folks can putz around with the MadVR software and run a HTPC for at least some content. There's no way I'll ever be able to justify the price of a good used car for a video processor. As for black bars - honestly, I really prefer to see things using the original aspect ratio. The movie maker(s) did it that way on purpose.

There’s nothing wrong with that. You have found a solution that works for you. I 100% agree it’s not an inexpensive product. But why does that make it criminal? It should be easy for someone build their own MadVR Envy Extreme for a fraction of the cost. Just playing Devil’s advocate, is the price of a Ferrari criminal? It’s a high performance, luxury item. To me, that’s exactly what the Envy Extreme is.

@@Youthman Sure. I just have a real hard time making the math work. $3000 for a very high end PC (I don't know exactly what's in the Envy hardware-wise, but that's plenty.) The thing I'm unsure of is the video in and out part, but I doubt it's a $12000 part. A Ferrari is built from a huge amount of custom parts to very exacting standards; they're a massive waste of our joint resources, but the price is somewhat justifiable. But there are a lot of people out here who could benefit from the MadVR features who simply can't pay that kind of money. So yeah - the word "criminal" wasn't meant to be interpreted literally. Just to convey my feelings about their pricing for the hardware product. But of course, I'm glad the developer is (hopefully) making a good living off the software he created, and it is still available free of charge for all three of us still using HTPCs, so it's not all bad.

@@KimmoJaskari You are absolutely right. The hardware is about $3000, which means the other $5000-7000 is markup of the madVR software. NVIDIA charges $1600 for their highest end video card, and they don't charge extra for the equally impressive AI software they developed to take advantage of that hardware. I understand madVR doesn't make their own hardware components, so they have to charge something for the software. As a software engineer myself, of course I understand the devs need to get paid too, but that markup is absurd.

This product like the Trinnov and the Z 4K video systems are all PC based systems centred around a mediocre i7 computer and while they are very good I can't bring myself to pay 15k, 22k and 25k respectively for what equates to a $800 computer with Fancy Software and a fancy front plate...

Good demonstration @Youthman. You should probably do a profiles video soon also since you have a profile for NLS. That way in case someone tries to use your video as a walkthrough and they're looking for a NLS profile which doesn't exist by default and their dealer may not have set on up they can make one. One thing many people don't realize is that if they go into picture settings and over to custom zoom is that they can do the same frame overlay over their video they are watching if they want to try and fine tune it some more as opposed to using the built in images. What I did on mine was just assign the Toggle NLS to a hold for the blue button. That only toggles the active NLS that is on currently but works for a quick way to witch it on the fly. Good video though very interested in seeing what else you have planned. The Envy as you know is an amazing device and always enjoy seeing content on it.

It really depends on what you feel is comfortable. I’m 9’ from 150” 2.35:1 image. I would recommend shining your projector on the wall to determine how close do you want to sit.

I too have a 160" 2.35 screen and I use NLS with a Lumagen and love it. But I did find that using NLS from 1.85 to 2.35 was too much and made people standing on the left and right look fat. So I added small black out roller blinds on each side for content that is in the 1.85 range and NLS to that. No more gray bars for anything or people looking fat.

I just use the zoom feature of my laser projector and do a horizontal and vertical stretch on my 16x9 screen. The screen is completely filled out and I don't have to worry about the aspect ratio changing during the movie.

I haven’t measured it in 7 years since I built it. Simply going from memory as I always stare 150” and not width. My room is 13’ wide so it’s probably closer to 12’ wide. I wouldn’t have counted the frame.

@@Youthman That's because you haven't done 5 minutes of research. Lumagen outsells MadVR in droves, and gets updates frequently. It can do everything the Envy can do with aspect ratios, provides better DTM, and doesn't have the issues with gaming that the Envy does. Both devices are constantly evolving, but people who just bought a $12,000 MK1 now have to buy a $15,000 MKII for the new features. You just sound either uninformed or bought and paid for. Didn't used to be you.

I am nowhere an expert on video processors and am personally new to madVR. I’m going on information from guys like Nigel with Absolute Ultimate AV who have switched over to madVR, even for their Christie customers. We all have to choose what works best for our application. If Lumagen provides everything you need and you save money, that’s fantastic. But your initial statement you said you can do the same thing with Lumagen for less $$$ and then in your reply you stated it cannot do everything MadVR can do. Sounds like a contradiction to your initial statement. If I am uninformed that Lumagen can do everything the Envy Extreme can do, by all means enlighten me.

Before adding the Envy, anything smaller than 2.35:1 had grey bars on left and right. Now my 2.35:1 screen is fully utilized, regardless of the aspect ratio.

It is your theatre and you can do what you like but if was me I would display all films in their intended ratio. I would also add masking on both sides the way movie theatres do it this way the bars are not grey.

Thank you for the video, as usual, your videos are very informative and helpful. I always appreciate your Contant, in fact, you helped me out a lot when I was calibrating my system. This is a very interesting concept, eliminating the gray bars, especially when you are talking about, a movie like interstellar, which has a lot of switching back-and-forth on the aspect ratio. But I think the bigger question is whether or not it is really worth the money to purchase this extra equipment to eliminate the gray bars. First, there are very few movies that really switch aspect ratios Back-and-forth. So there is a question as to whether or not the equipment is worth it, dealing with a very small population of movies. Secondly, the gray bars are not really a problem once you get used to them. I have a Sony OLED, so, in my set up, the gray bars are actually completely black. All the pixels are completely shut off, and if you have the lights off in the room while you’re viewing the movie, you don’t even notice, the black bars. It just feels like you’re in the theater watching a movie on the proper aspect ratio. Again, thank you so much for your very helpful video, reviewing this brand new technology. I’m just not sure it’s a worthwhile purchase to solve what really seems to be a very small problem.

I highly doubt anyone is purchasing an Envy just for NLS. This was just the first of many videos I will be sharing about what it offers. We all have to decide whether something is “worth it” for our system. Some would say the same thing about a $2,000 TV. To them, a $700 Walmart TV does everything they need.

@@Youthman sorry if the comment came out short handed but as a video professional and purist it seems like one is inventing a solution to a problem with a more or less fixed solution. For tone mapping I see the benefit for sure. But distorting the imagine is almost in the same vane as “auto HDR” (given madVR seem to do a decent enough job). The price tag is sadly just outlandishly… outlandish. But I guess there is some kind of place for the highest end of video processors.

I've always disliked VAR, especially as a non-standard screen-shape user (CIA). Personally, I dislike the concept generally, and I dislike it in particular the way Nolan uses in his films - and I dislike it *specifically* the way he uses it in Interstellar, going up & down multiple times within the same scene. (Bay's use in Last Knight was maybe the worst I've ever seen.) Ridiculous gimmick. Fair play to madVR for at least trying something to overcome this nonsense - even if it does fly in the face of "artistic" intent. In the case of VAR though, artistic intent be damned! I'd love madVR give old Nolan a demo of this feature: "There you go, Chris, we've fixed your problem, off you go mate!" Anyway, thanks for another great video - even if I'm unlikely to ever stump up the asking price for an Envy.

As with any component, it won’t be for everyone. For me personally, I do not feel any obligation to “director’s intent”. I prefer to have an immersive image. And the 1” or less that is cropped doesn’t take away from the story being told on screen. Honestly, if you didn’t know it was slightly cropped, would you still feel you were missing something?

@@Youthman like you said, not for everyone. Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson will change ratios in scenes to create a feel or draw attention to a moment. For them, the aspect ratio is part of the performance.

Honest question. Why should the director be the only one who can decide? Shouldn’t the consumer have equal rights to view a movie the way they deem is best? I personally think movies that switch aspect ratio are dumb.

@@Youthman Absolutely the consumer ultimately has the right to view movies the way they want, but as an home theater enthusiast, I imagine you would want to preserve the vision of the artist. Aspect ratio changes are sometimes a storytelling choice. An example are Wes Anderson films. They are there to create a feeling. Other times it based on format like IMAX ratios. Ultimately, it’s your choice. Personally, I would stick to what was intended by the artist.

As a home theater enthusiast, I do get a feeling when aspect ratios change. A feeling of frustration. For me, it creates a negative response. I do not feel I need to maintain the director’s vision. The important thing is whether or not I connect with the movie, not necessarily the choice of aspect ratio.

As someone who projected commercially, I don’t like the idea of this because it’s still modifying the film from how it was meant to be seen. Invest in proper masking for all ratios so that each film is presented properly. Now these IMAX and variable aspect ratio films are a different story as the director clearly doesn’t care what ratio it is because they can’t make up their mind in the first place. I have found most IMAX films with varying aspect ratios play great cropped to scope or even better at 2.20:1. I’ve actually found if you design your room to have 2.20:1 as the largest format that everything else fits nicely within that and will still feel big.

No way on stretch. MadVR should release their box as modular so customers could just buy tonemapping and add other features by card if desired. Masking panels are the better option. Don’t stretch the content, mask the unused portion of the screen.

The geometric distortion introduced by NLS is far more distracting than black bars, IMO, and it’s hugely disrespectful of the filmmakers to boot. MadVR really killed any “respect the cinematographic intent” credentials they may have had when they started marketing it. I used to think of MadVR as an aspirational tool to calibrate HDR tone mapping on a projector to better match the intent of the filmmakers. Now I view it as an overpriced toy for rich guys who just want to fill their screens at all costs.

Lets see... You're stretching a 16:9 picture to fit into a 2.35:1 frame? This entire thing sets one down to $15.000 What's the point? You get a sort of fish eye effect at the sides. Since you use a scope screen you will lose light no matter what. The only real option are • An anamorphic stretch with an anamorphic lens in front of the projector. No stretching, full light and a filled up screen. • The alternative is to add black bars as a subtitle file and you get no picture information spilled onto your wall, when you use a scope screen. For changing aspect ratio movies that is and if you use a media center. While the 2nd option will cost you about 25% light due using scope, it's by far the cheaper and easiest option. It requires no lens memory or an anamorphic lens. Or you switch to a 16:9 that can be matted for pure scope movies and don't have to deal with any of that nonsense If studios would just add the scope versions as a 2nd disc of these movies, no one had to deal with the crap anymore. I hate these switching aspect ratios 😡

I’m definitely not a fan of movies that switch aspect ratios. The Envy does a ton more than just NLS. Just one feature that adds a ton of convenience for filling an entire 16:9 or scope screen. Anamorphic lenses have their shortcomings as well. There’s no perfect solution. Just have to figure out what works best for your needs.

Hey I reckon the perfect solution would be not to have video switching built in to a movie in the first place. There is always a solution but sometimes it takes sacrifice.But if that happened MadVr and lumagen would not sell as many units. Oh no we can’t have that. Even if movies that have variable aspect ratios went away tomorrow, NLS in the Envy would still be beneficial as me is are 16:9, but switch to a different aspect ratio for the movie. Or when you switch sources and it’s in a different AR.

@@Youthman I tend to think along the lines of “Sometimes less can mean more”. Meaning less in the chain. I found this out first hand with my ano lens paired with my NX7. I found the image def sharper without the lens and in all honesty in my case the image was no brighter with the lens. The only reason I purchased the lens is because I thought it would improve the image.and persuaded myself that I needed it.I could of saved myself a ton of money.In regards to a lumagen or madvr envy, the point I am making is it’s a lot of money for such little return. People need to be told this upfront because it’s true. Although most of us enthusiasts would love to have any leg up we can get from our system and would be appreciative of any improvements,the cost of these units clearly out way the benefits to me personally and I don’t think I would be alone here. When you have a dedicated room and you paint it black, then add absorption and treat it you realise what is more important.

Truth is, we don’t need anything. Having a dedicated Home Theater, especially with a $8,000 + projector certainly falls into the category of luxury. No one needs an Envy. The purpose of this series of videos is to show what the features are from a consumer’s perspective in real world scenarios. I’m not trying to convince anyone they need an Envy. That’s up to each individual to decide that for themselves.

I watched most of the livetream a few weeks back with MadVr. There was a screengrab fom an NFL game. The one with a player at the far left of the screen. The madvr streatch looked a lot more warped than the original. Quite clearly not perfect and looked kinda funny actually. The yardlines in front of the player were all wobly and should have been straight. This didn´t look like the result of a 10K dollars piece of software. They could maybe update it later on. But at that price you really shouldn´t have to live with imperfections like that. Just saying

I guess the flip side is there any other product on the market that can offer the same feature and do it perfectly? As with all tech, it’s continually improving. The reality is there isn’t a perfect solution no matter what you do. Some use electronic masking but you can’t switch masking that fast. Some deal with the gray bars. That’s not ideal or perfect. We all have to find what works best for us.
