The Interior
The interior is a genre that is not embraced by the majority of artists but is a genre rich with the opportunity for expression of daily life and of contemporary culture. Interiors that are naturally lit are particularly evocative the artist can key on this and find a dramatic source of light to fall on their subject. We have this sort of image today.
The coffee house has flourished in recent years - especially in my country which had little or no coffee culture for many years. European culture has embraced this culture and refined it into an experience. We will use the Vienna coffee house as our motif today. The coffee house we are in is so rich visually - the character is classic and expressed from the coffered ceilings to the marbled floors. While visually evocative these elements can be difficult to draw and paint.
The Light
Being aware of the light and it’s influence on your subject will always be an advantage to you. Certainly in the creation of an interior the light source plays a major role and finding the right light or creating it will be central to a successful interior. In today’s work the light is coming from behind- back lit - this condition makes it easier to paint things such as figures and other things as they look like silhouettes. Our main light source is coming in from the windows and so we see shadows coming towards us from the figures tables and chairs
