As a developer of 5 years I’ve noticed the influx of unqualified people making software engineering videos on YT and offering mentorships. I saw something similar when I came out of the Army. A lot of people were trying to teach shooting skills who had no combat experience. I always look for instructors with military or law enforcement background and actual time in combat. Everyone should do the same for software engineering. How long has this person been in the industry? What are their credentials? Vet your instructors and mentors or you’ll get fed BS.

This man speaks the truth. In any field, those with just enough knowledge to be dangerous will jump from new fad to the next new fad. It's not until you've got a few years of practical experience behind you that you realize those who excel solve problems, those who flounder focus on tools. The one solving problems uses the best tool for the task at hand; the one who focuses on tools can't move beyond that to see the bigger picture.
@rdean150
@rdean150 2 жыл бұрын
Often, the people solving problems aren't using the best tools for the tasks they are assigned. They simply use the standard tools that are used in their organization. They make do with what they have, but they do it in a way that other people in their organization will be able to support in the future.

To be clear, I 100% agree with your point here, and am just trying to reinforce it by emphasizing that the programming language or framework used is not particularly important. Design patterns, architecture, scalability, resiliency, supportability - these are what matter.

If you think developers are bad before they have few years of experience than we have different definitions of bad. Those people were good enough to get a job. Apps like Facebook were made by inexperienced developers. If a new developer has made a copy of Instagram, then he has made a copy of Instagram. No amount of pretending that that's not the case will change reality. And saying that their copy app doesnt have all the features of Instagram therefore it doesn't count is ridiculous. Instagram has existed for several years and a bunch of employees work on it. How dare java script students or react students think they can reacrate Instagram just because they did reacrate Instagram?
@hil449
@hil449 2 жыл бұрын
@@smrtfasizmu6161 the thing is these videos don't recreate Instagram at all and they give you a false sense of accomplishment. It's basically a CRUD with an Instagram skin, do you really wanna be proud of doing this? This is useful for practicing front end and creating a basic CRUD, something any college student can make, nothing more than that

I couldn't agree more with this entire video. I get asked from people asking me how to become a software engineer and I tell them pretty much the same things - focus on actually learning and understanding rather than building your "script kitty" skills which doesn't make you a software engineer. It's definitely not easy to say the least, especially for those who don't have the educational background but it's absolutely possible. You just have to focus on the fundamentals and strive to really understand rather than get good at doing tutorials.

I couldn't agree more with the first couple of points, always choose your instructors carefully and stay away from most of the short videos out there! As someone who teaches software engineering and creates videos, I can say that teaching is extremely difficult and requires a lot of effort and research not to mention that the person needs to have years of experience in the field. If someone is not willing to put that much effort and they just care about getting views and money, there's a great chance that they will end up misleading people. Please be careful! Also, always keep in mind that your goal should be to create the best software applications out there, you need to become a software engineer, not a tool developer! you need to spend most of your time trying to master the fundamentals especially if your starting out. Wish you all the best in your career!

Great vid! One point that I don’t fully agree is related to the more “technical” aspects of programming, like data structures and algorithms. Most devs aren’t working in companies dealing with billions of requests per second, so most devs won’t need more than a basic understanding of these topics. And maybe if you try to build simple apps or backend applying the same techniques, you’ll be over-engineering or creating unnecessary complexity, upsetting the biz people that just wanna deliver a working feature to a client. What I mean is that, yeah, it’s super important to understand the more complex or “academic” topics of CS, but if you don’t really know them yet, it’ll be ok to release apps in production in a lot of times. It shouldn’t stop you, or create impostor syndrome. Try to learn them, but don’t obsess about it - I know bc I used to 😅

I’m in robotics software and KZbin has been helpful learning the basics of data structures and languages like C++, Rust, Julia, and Python. However, your point about false competence really hit home not just because of KZbinrs who think they know what they’re doing but myself as well. Writing production grade code needs to be learned from experience; just because I watch a video doesn’t mean I can actually use it in my job. Also, your point about tools is true in robotics: we use Python and C++. There’s little incentive to learn a new language because we don’t need one.

Hi Utsav. I appreciate your candid advice! I sorta accidentally "fell into" a dev role earlier this year with very little knowledge or experience, and the field is massive and often difficult for a newbie to navigate. I've begun to replace my evening KZbin entertainment with videos about development, but I'll be viewing them more critically now, and I'll try to focus more on long-form lectures about things like data structures -- which are actually very interesting! As someone totally new to the field, data structures can seem boring at first blush, but every one of them feels like learning a new kind of arcane magic. Not letting go of my mechanical keyboard though. ;)

The difficulty with learning programming is all the misinformation. Not everyone knows computer science and software engineering are two similar but different fields. Half the influencers are computer science students and tend to recommend difficult topics that don’t really pertain to everyone, and 30 percent of them are salesmen trying to sell their course. Learning to program isn’t very hard In it self, its just a tool. The skill of problem solving, however, is very difficult skill to learn and takes time to build and proper guidance from professionals no matter what industry your in.

Once the product gets some traction, software engineers will come along the journey and build that Instagram the right way for it to be scalable. Facebook started like that, so AirBnB, Instagram, Amazon, Google, Apple first products, and so on. Rare is a product that started with the right architecture discussed about in the conferences you recommended. But, I repeat, your advices are the way to go if you want to integrate a team that is working on an existing product.

I've been in IT in one form or another since 1977 (yeah, I'm an old fart but still thoroughly engaged with modern development) and I can tell you that what Utsav suggests in this video is 100% accurate. I urge those first entering into the field to master the fundamentals and master your craft and you will have a leg up when it comes to surviving and thriving in the current trend of HBD (hyped based development) and language/framework/library dujour. Utsav, with this video your earned my respect and I am now a subscriber. I look forward to watching your catalog of videos and new content.

Amazing video. Thank you for your honesty. I'm an aspiring developer, and there is a lot of videos and blogs saying "don't learn X language, learn Y instead". Months ago I decided to learn Java and someone said to me that it was a bad idea, that I have to learn C# instead, because we are not in the 2000s, etc... I think is also really difficult for front-end developers, because there is always a new JS framework.

One of the best videos in your channel, I see a worrying trend in instagram promoting half baked concepts and shorts on the trending topics (like data science). Heck they amass a crowd with their shorts, call them "insta family" and start a business stating that they mentor people to enter and excel in that specific field. This is as bad as clickbaiting.. they are just cashing in on the trend, things have become entertainment rather than passion and hardwork

I got my start in programming with KZbin videos back in the day. I would do the code-along tutorials and write the code with the person. I constantly ran into issues that I was unable to diagnose on my own. Now that I've been coding for a while and I started a career in it, I always use the docs. If I want to learn a new technology, I will often go to the "quick start" version of the docs to have a bit of fun. Fantastic takes, thank you for sharing your thoughts with the community!

Analysis Paralysis - Finding the best new technology, comparing two different frameworks. I fall into this a lot! Tech youtube there is a constant bashing of specific languages and frameworks. False Competence - Tutorial hell! To ensure you have learned something, you should be able to recall it! Contextual Use - Use youtube videos how you want them to be intended, don't get trapped into clicking into more and more videos! Content Compilation - Take notes and recall what you have learned! Summarize your thoughts!

Your answer to the best programming language to pick at the start is accurate for those who don't care where they end up and just want the highest chance of succeeding somewhere and anywhere. But if you know you want to do cloud services at big tech, embedded at tech product companies, or video games, then you do have much fewer choices, if not one that is going to make you better. As an ex hobby game dev, professional "enterprise" dev / cloud services dev at big tech for 13+ years, and a bit (2 years?) of professional systems level programming -- literally a single solid and somewhat chunky professional programming book on a serious language; getting through at least 2/3rd or 3/4th of it, actually digest that information, and finish a few projects on your own (doesn't have to be externally visible deployments) will make you above average in the industry in terms of programming experience. Unfortunately a huge chunk of software engineering involves a bit of a systems engineering or systems administration hat, and software architecture hat as well. So if you're really coming from "zero" in terms of what tools and technology is available in your industry, or what problems exist and how problems are typically addressed, you're going to need to get up to speed on that on the job. Maybe you can read about some of that stuff, but I feel like trying to learn about solutions to problems you've never come close to genuinely trying to, or needing to, address means you won't really understand the solution.

That's one of the best carrer advices i've seen here on youtube. I 100% agree. I usually feel left out when i see my colleagues (at university) doing lots of toy projects and getting lots of certifications and constantly posting on linkedin, all the while i'm silently doing my internship, studying my uni courses and other related comp. sci. topics and focusing on foundational knowledge. Maybe i can reach a middle ground and also do some toy projects with some nice features using the latest and sexiest frameworks, but my focus is on practicing the fundamental aspects of comp. sci. (the fact i find it fascinating helps, studying development libraries and frameworks usually bore me; starting a web server on one line of code doesn't teach me anything about the web, servers, browsers or the O.S. for example).
