I've been two years in, I'm more senior than 70% of the workforce (cf internal website you mentioned) it's crazy. Definitely agree with the culture, pressure and boring side of it.. (and the benefits 😅) Also, the culture is very formatting, in the sense that you cannot escape from it, you are molded to think, act and behave in the Amazon way. I hate it when managers comment on your actions by using the leadership principles to tell you how you should have done or behaved. The manager is always like "it's not me, but according to LP x, you should have done this or this". The promotion process is also a joke : you have to consistently perform at the next level before being promoted as such. So basically everyone in the company is getting paid for the level below their actual responsibilities.. (Well, you probably guessed it, I'm about to quit soon 😄) Cool vid otherwise 👍

Thank you for being so candid! One thing I care about the most is a company's culture. It doesn't matter how much money I'm offered; if I'm not happy, I won't be a great employee. It's hard not wanting to work for Amazon seeing that their job posts are given more attention on job boards like LinkedIn. Now, I have to be more cautious about which companies I want to apply for.

I'm half Korean, was born in Korea and spent the first half of my life there so I have a reasonable understanding of your struggle from Korea, to Japan and America. I was born an American citizen so I had the advantage of not having to work extra hard for my right to live in the US, that's why I think your story is very inspiring. I'm 34 now and you at least seem quite a bit younger than me and yet you've achieved so much more by working at some big name companies like NCSoft, Amazon and Microsoft (two out of the Big Five!). Aside from obviously being a talented software engineer, you're also trilingual and fluent in English. Flip side of things, internally transferred within Amazon (as a SWE as well) and found that the process was super smooth. Reached out to ~10 different teams and it was super interesting hearing about the different projects going on within Amazon and finding an initiative that more fit what I was looking for. (Was in a similar situation where I was working in full-stack but wanted a much more back-end role to better understand their problems). I did have to re-interview like you mentioned in the video, although the process was much more lax because there was already an understanding that the person passed 'the bar' previously. Although, that being said, I definitely agree that there's so many great companies out there, so there really isn't any 'wrong' answer, more just whatever works for each individual person!

I think it's really important for me never to regret my career decisions, especially if I leave a company to pursue something else. I like to think of it as "my path", and this idea people have that you need to stay in a company for at least a year, else your resume won't look good, needs to just stop. No one, especially for their mental health and career stagnation, should put up with any company, team, environment that is detrimental to them in the long run. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

I am an SDM at Amazon for 4.5 years now with the same team and everyday I learn something new. The average time for engineers with me is about 3.5 years and the job satisfaction is quite good on the anonymous surveys. I think you got a bit of a bad luck with your team ownership and culture. It's not the same in every org. I do see allot of care and interest in having the engineers engaged, motivated and happy with what they do. Before I joined I did hear some stairs about people crying in their desk, but I have never seen that. We have team events every 2 weeks and an offsite every quarter sponsored by Amazon. But I see you took the right decision, being happy with what you do and have passion for that is what's going to make your time fly. I agree, dealing with html css as a Software Engineer is stupid. I used to enjoy doing it on my own, but in code reviews differences of opinion have no objective weight are generally centered around, "I don't like this". Backend is more objective, is it fast? does it scale well? Is the code robust?

This is very interesting to me because I’m trying to break into my first software developer role ideally with their AWS team . I was able to secure a management offer and hope to transition that way , but of course you are aware of the things Amazon is known for . What’s drawn me is the possibility of high wage atp and movement upward within a year . I studied economics and comp science . The former being the one I am about to finish . Ideally though before I have to accept this role I hope to look for data science or something as I prepare to actually become an engineer. Do you think other Amazon teams would offer a better experience?

Hmmm I can’t really say for sure as each org is different and it all depends on the team your supervisor the people u meet, etc. but I do know that AWS is the most demanding org of all. Whether the work the team u work for is a right fit for u is unfortunately something u’d have to find out after u join

I'm Mid level and in my current team we have a UI designer, and It's truly a relief I don't have to come up with any bland looking layout that just will do as the visual of some rendered component that I'd be working on. Now I merely have to implement some neat layout designs and just concern myself with the responsive web design aspect, which is often a big headache, but at least I have guidelines to work with. I told them I could learn Go to lend a hand to the BE staff which is currently a One Man Army and is pretty much overwhelmed dealing with bugs. The management was pretty enthusiastic with the idea and provide me some learning resources on Udemy. So yeh, I believe there's plenty room for me to keep growing as a SWE at my current workplace. And the pay is decent from where I live .

I understand the toxic culter problem and the pips, seen it happen to a few friends who were technically savy but spoke up against corporatism bs ( other collegues getting promoted, not because of their technical skill but because the include bs words like "impact, quality, customer etc" in every mail and whenver they opened their mouth) , but the other are mostly generational issues. people want to be tought whatever is cool on the market then so they can switch jobs easily , and no work on the tasks they were hired for and that were presented to them in the interview.

I think the perks (or lack of) are a generational thing. I routinely meet software engineers aged 30 or younger who say they aren't motivated by compensation, but also say they expect a lot of perks such as free food, pet insurance, etc. etc. Full disclosure, I'm 45 and love free food, but I'd brown bag every day for a $50K raise. These are obviously very intelligent people. They must understand if they were paid a high base salary they could indulge in whatever lifestyle upgrades the "perks" might have covered.
@RexZShadow
@RexZShadow 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is more when you compare Amazon with other company of equal tier the perk sucks. Yes if you getting 50k raise fuck free food lol. But if Google, Microsoft and other people pay the same but also include way better perks then ya Amazon does pale compare to their peers.
@StonkeyKong
