Thank you! I recently commented on another guitarists channel that him using an SM57 and an expensive ribbon microphone made very little difference to the sound quality. They sounded very similar. I have switched off the function and will listen to the video again.

Good call. By the way for anyone trying to turn it off, it seems like you can just tap the switch but that doesn't work, you need to press abd hold until you see it change. Cheers, Mike

The second audio file is way louder. I noticed it was on during the clips. I remember noticing it and thinking I'd turn it off, but then I realised youtubers don't have any standards for audio levels so you get a lot of variation even in one video, let alone across the board. Furthermore some try to make their content louder, some don't know how to make their content louder, many don't know how to balance it out even though they apparently tried but at least on my end it's not good. And then there's people who can't control the recording environment and dialogue and whatnot. It'd be so easy if everyone was recording in a recording studio and was a producer or something. For similar reasons I have the volume balance on on Spotify even though I know it hurts the listening experience. I listen to Spotify on the go and in noisy environments, I listen to music across hundred or so years and as such there's no consistency on the song levels (even in albums today where some people like Opeth decided to release a good old album without pushing the volumes and it had a ton of dynamic range, making it really difficult to listen to other than in quiet home with loud enough decent playback system). To summarise, these things that hurt the quality and ruin some people's hard work are mostly beneficial for general experience - even if you're an audiophile yourself. Honestly though, I didn't notice meaningful difference between stable volume on/off in quality. It was more like nuance than changed how I perceived the clips. Although I've stopped obsessing over blind audio tests on gear, nowadays I just listen to what sounds like a good vibe because the differences are so minor that I struggle to imagine them in the context of my own rig. These days I watch so much more talking content than audio comparison content that I had completely forgot this stuff. What I do suggest is turning ambient mode off. It's a very minor visual change but drastic performance difference. I noticed that on weaker systems or more load the performance drops significantly if you have ambinet mode enabled. Which makes sense, it's some sort of dynamic gradient visual effect for a big portion of the screen. What about the resolution/quality effect on both the video and audio quality though? How if you make something 4k, the quality of the picture and audio is better even if you're not watching full screen or have a smaller monitor. Heck even if you end up setting it at lower resolution on youtube. What would be a useful thing (third what start in a row) is something like a tag on the creator's side that says "don't use stable volume by default on this video" or a UI reminder that it's music content and you might enjoy it more if you turned stable volume off. Or creators just manually handling it by adding yet another content irrelevant section to their videos saying remember to turn it off for this video.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't notice this feature rollout. I uploaded a mix recently and it sounded REALLY strange & quiet for some reason. I knew I was bouncing & uploading in the correct spec to avoid the majority of KZbin's past interference - this definitely explains it. Just A/B'd with the toggle on & off.

I can hear the difference now, but I may leave the feature on because I improvise and stream over jam tracks via KZbin and sometimes the levels are SUPER different.

Do a loop test. For this whole time KZbin has been doing almost no 'compression' etc. on audio, it's the video that gets munched. Normalising loudness levels should be an option for sure if KZbin is now automating it.

On a side note, something is off with your 4k footage or video encoding. It's blurry and aliased, looks like the main video is cropped and then blown up, some 720p footage was upsampled or something along those lines.
