I would just like to mention here, a guy named Neil Cicirega. He is an incredibly influential person on the internet, that barely anybody but his long time fans know the scope of. He created some huge early 2000s internet stuff, such as The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, The Potter Puppet Pals, Brodyquest, and so much more that it’s hard to explain in a short blurb. He also has a completely indie music career, by the name of Lemon Demon. Some of his songs are a lot more meme-y and jokey, I can particularly think of his EP Nature Tapes (which features BrodyQuest, Two Trucks, Jaws, and My Trains) as one, but there are some really interesting songs with genuine things to say. His newest album, Spirit Phone is insanely good and just shows how far he grew as a musician over his 20+ year run on the internet (which is still ongoing!) As i mentioned before, he is a completely indie artist. He’s signed with needlejuice, but if you know anything about needlejuice you’ll know that that basically all they do is produce the music in physical forms. All of neil’s/lemon demons success has been purely through the power of time and the internet and I find that incredibly fascinating. :)

Charlie Puth actually got his origins as a KZbinr! His old songs have been long removed since he signed a record deal, but in 2010 he recorded jingles for Shane Dawson that he used in his videos. Justin Bieber was discovered on KZbin, but idk how much this one really counts as he really just uploaded a few song covers that went viral and got Usher’s attention. Troye Sivan also got his start as a pretty popular KZbinr, but as he got more popular through his music, he started to focus purely on the music. Not as well known as the people mentioned here, but there’s an artist called “Stellar” who was a somewhat successful fortnite KZbinr who turned into a musician and has had some success with it. D4vd was in a similar position but I can’t find his old Fortnite videos. Apparently he made his music originally to get past KZbinr copyright from using other people’s songs, but became way more successful than anyone was expecting.

Also another good example is Quedeca, who went from making a KSI diss track to one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the past year. A bit different than the focus of the video, but we could even talk about artists like Rebecca Black who because popular pretty off of KZbin. Lastly, Post Malone, believe it or not, was close friends with some big Minecraft KZbinrs and would commonly hop on their channels before he became famous. He also collaborated with H3H3 as well.

There's a lot of good music on KZbin, but I am genuinely surprised that the fact we have Justin Bieber and other musicians that were scouted via youtube and then made a full circle to become a meme on the platform was never mentioned in this video. The history is very important to know in order to truly understand the way this platform works.

I would like you to do a video about why youtube music videos don’t get that much views anymore Back in the 2010s If a song blows up it gets 1 billion views in less than a year and btw there is no music video that got 1 billion views that was uploaded in 2021 or after and out of the Top 100 most popular music videos by views only 1 was uploaded in the 2020s specifically in 2020 And even the current trendy songs let’s say "calm down" and "Flowers" only got 500-600M views So what is this weird phenomenon ? did spotify destroy youtube ? Do people watch tiktok to listen to music now ? Literally right now the only music videos who are gaining views fast are indian music videos and kids music videos And even artists aren’t gaining that much subs anymore just see on social blade

The section on logan paul was weird, he's not really a musician at this point, he's a youtuber who occasionally makes crappy songs for his child fanbase. If you check his monthly spotify listeners, its only about 200,000, showing that in comparison to his youtube, no one is listening, because it's bad. It feels insulting to bring him up in the same breath as other artists and not mention how universally disliked and unpopular his music is outside of his child fanbase. Also, saying that ricegum's content "continues to be popular" without mentioning that he hasn't made a song in years(and has even fewer monthly listeners than logan paul) and does family vlogs on a seperate channel is odd. The video is good but it's strange how reluctant you are to critize obviously bad artists who are/were only making music for the money/ youtube clout.
@ZackarySmigel

Thanks for the comment! Maybe I didn't convey the point well enough. This isn't really a definitive ranking of how well their music is. If that was the case I would have made a tier list video or something like that. But those videos already exist. I was trying to explain how impactful these KZbinrs were to KZbin Music and its culture. Yes, Logan Paul's music is universally disliked but when he started doing music it was a monumental cultural event on KZbin. All the reaction videos, diss tracks, etc. Same thing with Ricegum. Ricegum's Its Every Night Sis was a cultural event like no other. And yeah I said his content continues to be popular, I could have been more specific there. But for the record, I wasn't really covering their KZbin careers just their music careers if that makes sense.
@Stamnley
@Stamnley Жыл бұрын
@@ZackarySmigel That's a fair point and if that is wha you were going for then fair enough. But if youtube is going to continue to produce good musicians like joji or quadeca then the stigma of these artists needs to removed from people's minds so I get quite defensive when they're brought up at the same time as better artists that actually deserve respect from the wider music scene as conflating them hurts the real artists. Cool video tho I really liked it.

i think you missed a lot of key people and points in this video. quadeca deserved way more of a shoutout than just being lumped on with all the honorable mentions that weren’t interesting enough to get their own section. he’s had an insane artistic glowup as he’s transformed from a fifa youtuber who made a diss track to a genuinely impressive musician who has made two incredibly beautiful albums that were basically albums of the year for 2021 and 2022.i was also surprised you didn’t talk about wilbur soot and his band lovejoy, who are easily the most successful non-rap musicians to come from youtube. they have millions of monthly spotify listeners and have played at festivals like lollapalooza. some other notable youtube musicians you didn’t mention would be brian david gilbert, neil cicirega (who is pretty much the father of youtuber musicians), dodie and ren, who are both british musicians first that gained a following mainly through youtube, token, who also got popular through youtube, much older “youtube rappers” like watsky and mac lethal, and of course the entirety of “theorytube”, a bunch of professional musicians who make youtube videos about music (andrew huang, rob scallon, roomie, adam neely, yvette young of the band covet, tim henson of the band polyphia, justin hawkins of the band the darkness, emily hopkins, marty schwartz, mary spender, samuraiguitarist, music is win, etc.). i get that you probably didn’t talk about some things because the video is already half an hour, but i also feel like you only barely scratched the surface of the wild world that is youtube musicians. perhaps you could make a part 2 sometime?
