I love your response about what to include when gifting a quilt. I made 5 memory quilts when my nephew passed away. 4 years later when they were all done I gifted them to my sister and her family. I included a letter explaining how and why I made what I made. The labels included date and relationship of the recipient and quilter to my nephew.

Hi from Sydney Australia. In regards to the FMQ questions. Your statement "IT'S NOT EASY", made me laugh. No it's not- that's why we buy long arm frames. Quilters need to realise that there is a big difference in FMQ on a domestic sewing machine to FMQ on a long arm frame, and a computerised Gammel machine. I think as the whole purpose of quilting is to hold your three layers together, the finished goal is better than intricate computerised designs, so you focus on your patchwork. Finished is better than perfect. Great questions and answers as always.

HI. FRom Kootenay area of BC. I have belatedly watched the May1 Q&A. You asked for guest suggestions. How about a couple of the quilters from Gee"s Bend Alabama. I found them on KZbin about a month ago. I suggest if you haven't found them, take the time to look. Love them and the stories of the quilts. Also, my favourite is Timeless Treasures.

Wash or not...lol... I don't usually wash fabric before sewing ( unless I fear bleeding or massive shrinkage) but I do wash the finished quilt before gifting- this is really to manage the difference of a smooth flat look and the after look of the first wash. Also if things go haywire it'll be before the recipient has it.

I love how it's coming together and I know he will love it too!! The next quilt planned happens to be the quilt you picked off the shelf. Couldn't believe it. Thanks for great advice, patterns and inspirations. From South Carolina. 😻😻

The only time I wash a quilt before gifting it is when I’ve done hand-quilting and need to wash out the colored pencil I use to mark the hand=quilting lines. BUT I rarely hand-quilt anything anymore. I used to do more hand-quilting when I had to wait for my daughter to get out of a class, etc.

I wash every quilt before gifting with color catchers to prevent bleed and I use a lot of starch so washing takes the stiffness out.
@laurienorton7422
@laurienorton7422 3 жыл бұрын
I too wash before gifting. I don't use starch, but I use soak flatter. I like the scent, but not everyone does. Also softens and fluffs the quilt. I always use 80/20 cotton batting, if I wash it the recipient doesn't think they did something wrong when it's washed as the nature of cotton batting.

if a quilt is really intended for only the beach or picnics - not for cuddling up in - I have had great success with using canvas drop cloths for the backing. I don't use batting and do minimal quilting - although you could go crazy here. The canvas makes it sturdy and water repellant and washable! Coincidently I just finished on for my grandson today, it's a beautiful dinosaur digital panel and he's looking forward to taking it camping this summer.

Me too. Earlier this week I was working on a branch on my mother's side and found a 3rd great uncle whose wife's mother had an unusual last name that was the same name as my daughter's husband. Turns out her mother's father and my son-in-law's 6th great grandfather were bothers. I so quickly lost three days researching all of that and finding the common ancestor. But it was so much fun. We are all more closely related than we sometimes know.

Karen, your advice is SO helpful. I've been practicing FMQ, and I've used every bit of your advice, especially about slowing down. It also helped to get a machine that is built for it. My 1910 Singer just isn't, even though I was able to get a foot for it. As soon as I got the Janome HD5000, my FMQ improved immensely. I've still to use it on a real quilt, however. Practice and patience is the key. Plus Coach Karen.

I am wondering as you discuss your 4th of July quilt...how much do you stabilize your quilt (besides basting each side) as you quilt on the long arm? some folks talk about stitching in the ditch with each square and then coming back to fill in. Some dont seem to even do any, just quilting as they want and in what order they want. Which do you prefer, and why? Thanks! I have such a need to know! Laura Lea

I’ve got a suggestion for a quilt circle. A disabled quilter. I think it would be cool to get the perspective of someone else with accessibility issues. I love learning from our community! 💜💜

@@dragonfliesfordonna2112 thanks so much!! Pandemic hit & I didn’t have the space mentally to continue. I’ve been quilting so much this year though. I find it takes me days to cut and sew. I try to just enjoy every step and blare music I love. Hugs!! 💜💜

Perhaps a sub-group for JGIDQ?? I would really welcome helpful ideas from others with disabilities. I have immunity issues (staying at home), osteoarthritis in hands and shoulders, plus my eyesight isn't what it used to be. This all combines to mean that I have to take things slowly and I am usually on my own, except for FB and YT.

How about interviewing Jenny Doan, Donna Robertson, Cindi Rang? They have dedicated years to quilting and developing their respective businesses. There are many others of course.

Hi, I've taken flannel plaids or some call them woven cottons and made a sq ON a sq ON a sq. No batting. Either do QAYG or solid back. First block I think was like a 10", then put a sq on top of it ON POINT and top stitch it twice 1/2" from the edge and rag the edge (later). Then put anther sq ON top but not on point. Make sure the sq fits inside the seam line of the onpoint block. Once sewn together rag the edges. They are soft and wonderful! P.s. 1/2" seams. 💘 your videos. Greetings from Indian Trail, NC, USA.

Do you ever use a cutting system such as accuquilt, and if so, do you like it? From Texas

I don't because cutting is my favourite part of the process. But I friend has an accuquilt and loves it

My advice on learning free motion quilting: 1. Your first FM quilt will be for the dog, not a loved one. It is a practice quilt. Take the pressure off. Smoothness and facility will come suddenly at some point thereafter. Also, practice developing your raw muscle memory with pen and paper.

On your May 1 episode the lady from Hungary was likely asking you can I use regular flannel for a display wall as we don't have flannel backed tablecloths here.

The soul destroying part of FMQ is trying to match hand speed to foot/controller pressure. I have an awful foot control (tiny change causes huge increase in speed) and I can't afford to replace it. It's also difficult to 'spend' fabric on practise pieces which truly do look awful

@@jedberg7244 no dog donation options here and I just don't have use for many of the other options. Ive made a topper for the washing machine, an ottoman cover and a sewing machine cover and am no closer to anything I'd let anyone else see (and I an NOT a perfectionist and have been sewing for 60yrs). They're all projects I didn't need anyway. Massive problems with tension and skipped stitches as soon as I put a ruler foot on. Also problems with a foot control; machine goes from 0-100mph with minuscule changes of press. I think my choices are give up trying or spend a LOT of money for yet another machine

Might be too late on this question. I am a brand new quilter. I have watched your cutting videos. In ‘home ec’ class in the 1970’s we were taught the selvage was always straight and to use that to true up the fabric. But this doesn’t seem to be the rule when cutting for quilting. Is there a reason why? Am I not pre-washing.

Cecilia wants to know if flannel can be used for design wall to plan blocks because the Dollar Store flannel-backed tablecloths are not available in Hungary. Maybe lightweight cheap felt squares might serve if pasted up to a board?
