I think this was a great video. A designated studio set up is perfect for consistency as well as being able to knock out a video quickly without worrying about where you are going to set up.

Super limited budget. Upgrading my camera from my phone to an actual camera. $89 through Amazon. Using a green screen that came with 3 studio lights- $154 Amazon. I can change my background with my mouse. 10 x 20 canvass/carport studio $239/Costco. Plus tripod and miscellaneous... I got less than $750 into my studio. Thank you, Think Media, for your great videos. I am super new to KZbin and find your information invaluable! You have a loyal follower here. Keep it up!

To answer your question of the day, I think this video was very thorough. As a starting KZbinr, I think that you really just have to work with what you have. To some it can be almost intimidating since we feel like we can't do it without all of the right equipment. It's important just to start. This video is pretty much the end goal of the perfect ideal set up. Thanks for sharing with us!

I'm a sucker for bright backgrounds, so I use an ikea clothing rail, clothes pegs and different off cuts of material or wrapping paper. My lighting set up is similar to yours. As usual a very helpful video

Discovered my set by experimenting, was using the sofa but I have an open plan living room and the kitchen made for a terrible backdrop. I now use the corner of the room which has my nerd shelf full of games, action figures and Pops

I think it's important to have an interesting background. Some people may look at my background as TOO busy, but for me, I use it as a way to illustrate the mics I've tested. Hopefully people see it, and think of it as interesting, ultimately driving more traffic to my videos.

I figured out a pretty neat setup for a shotgun mic. I use a second tripod. I have 2 for when I need multiple cameras, and if I'm just making a normal video like how you are, with one camera and one mic, I can put the mic on the other tripod and put it in front of me, and since I stand for a lot of videos, it isn't usually seen in the video. and is under me, which catches my voice VERY nicely.

I use an inifinity black background. (Just solid black in the background.) Just get a large black cloth (can be found on amazon for about $15) and stand about 6-10 in front of it. I use a 3 point light system, 2 LED panels (left and right), and a "hair" light to keep me separated from the background. It's a pretty inexpensive set up and easier to keep clean than a sofa. (also a RODE mic user) :D

+chillinkansai I've always liked the look of a black background. Two questions: What distance is your camera at? What focal length?
@chillinkansai
@chillinkansai 7 жыл бұрын
I have the camera about 3-4 meters (12-15 ft.) away from the backdrop and I am about 5ft (1.5 m) in front of the camera. I use a 18-55 canon kit lens, around 24 or so to crop out the edges of the backdrop. The biggest catch is to not bring the lights too close to the backdrop. Mine are about 2-3 ft behind the camera and off to the sides. I occasionally have to tweek the video in post to darken it up a little, but generally that means I don't have the lights set quite right and the spill is making it all the way to the backdrop.

Had some major issues with that Manfrotto video head. Went through not one but two of them in a short time frame. The fluid color (red ring) for the pan got jammed up. Had to send it into Manfrotto for repair and got a brand new one back (they wouldn't repair it). Got the new one back and then the fluid tensioner knob for the head's tilt just jammed up the other day. Not sure if the person who was operating the camera at the time (I stepped out of the shoot and handed over to another photographer) tightened it too much but it's now completely jammed. Point is, be very careful with that tri-pod video head. The fluid tensioners are very sensitive and clearly prone to locking up.

I think most have too much in the background. In Australia, for me, the Gold Standard is the ABC with its 7.30 program, and its news reports. For a photographer, I think one or two examples on the wall behind. If those are used in the video too, then that ties the two together very well.

I struggled a lot with my set area, working on what to have in it and how to light it right, camera angles. I have limited space, so it was challenging. I finally gave up and bought a 5 x 6.5 popup green/blue screen background and will be using that, inserting a nice 'set' image or whatever bg I want, including video or text if I like. I can blur a room photo in my photo editor (someone suggested I take pictures at IKEA-lol) to make it look like bokeh without having to own the right lens to make that effect in my space. So, for 53 bucks I can fake the same effect as a large aperture lens costing 300 dollars or more, but using my respectable EFS 18-55 Canon lens that came in the kit, which gives me some zoom options as well. I bought the Fovitec StudioPRO - 5' x 6.5' Green/Blue Double-Sided Pop-Out Muslin Backdrop from amazon.com if you are interested. Watch the video a few times to learn how to fold it up. FYI, I will be editing in DaVinci Resolve, which is free and has great editing, including custom mattes for green screen.

You don't need a ring light. Led lights are cheap and have filters. Musician's friends always has good prices on stands. You don't need 1500 dollars of camera gear for a home youtube set. This guy spent 2-3 grand. You can get good KZbin video and audio equipment for around 500.

Do what we did: Start an equipment budget. Fund it with what you can. As it grows, buy items piece by piece. Before you know it, you'll have a nice starter kit. Buying pre-owned is a great way to save loot. I just got a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens in the FB Marketplace for only $60!! Start where you are until get to where you want to be!

I use my very tiny bed room, with 50mm 1.8 STM, a great lens, you can't tell it is a bed room, I use day light, Canon EOS 1300D (Rebel t6 in America), a chair, and a Weifeng 3111 tripod (it kinda broke after a week, so I can't recommend it), and I use my phone for recording audio, with some DIY mounting

BTW this is the setup that I choosed AFTER doing some videos, when I started I found an old bridge camera in and tripod in my house, and asked my parents if I can use it for my KZbin Channel, I did used it, and I learned a lot about White balance, Exposure, composition, lighting, etc..., So if anyone read it, take a note: search around your house or ask someone in your family if they have a camera, it doesn't need to be new or have 1080p, etc.. but if it can do manual exposure it will probably help you learn the basics

i have used all kinds of lighting. music stands(drummer) and clip lights with led bulbs worked great for me. a desk lamp can be useful for up light effects, like my thumbnail. you can see the shadow of the leg on the wall behind. kind of unfair advantage, worked in stage and sound for years. great video

Nice vid, as usual. Your window background does a great job of avoiding shadows on the back wall, even when you're close to it. Shadows are something I struggle with due to the layout of my available basement "studio" space, even if I get the lights right next to the ceiling.

Basically from cheap experience. What i do for a backdrop is that I get an extendable hanger and place my blanket there and hang it somewhere. For the Microphone I made a diy mic cause I cant afford a real one so I cut my old earphones into mic cause it was an old earphone with a mic, and with open camera I had it setup. Now I only bought 3 items for my setup. A yunteng tripod and 3 lenses, wide angle(0.66mm), macro, and fish eye. I really didnt need a monopod and tripod because we already had that but the tripod is about 4 inches and the legs are small and the monopod is good but its unbalanced. I just wanted 2 share cause I feel its not only me whos cheap in vlogging so yeah that might help? Idk

very informative video!.. very easy to understand for everyone. BTW ,,whenever you want to travel to different countries and do some shooting, i recommend you fly on an F214-44 since they have the best 577s and the fluxcapacitors in the cabin make safer for the electronic equipment. they have the best NEERS's and 889-CVX's around. ALso when you board,you walk through the Grouners Mattatos,they are very cool to set up once you get to your seat. When you find your seat on the 551-MHTers or the PPr5s-vss you just press the 775-ers but you cant just push the button, you set up the Crawlper's or the G.U.N.B.F's 556...cont get the 557 if they offer them..even if they're free.grab the JUUR.s's they can do some 445's look bad.

Great tips. Camera gear spot on. Bi-color lights very cool. But audio can be vastly improved. Adding sound panels will get rid of the echo. Sounds like you're in a bathtub. Can't hurt to have a bigger room either. Seems cramped. And if you're home why not use a condenser mic with and audio interface recording into a DAW? There are some great cheap mics like C-1 Behringer for 50 bucks. But the advantage of your setup is that you can use it outside too. But in that case a lavalier (especially wireless or into an H1) would be a better option. The only time I see a boom stand having an advantage is with an assistant with a mobile system. Otherwise you're better off with a Shure V83 going into an H1 or something. The mic you have pretty much sucks. And going into the camera with the mic makes it even worse. Always better to record the audio separately if you like good sound. But it's way too easy to criticize. Your video is great and most people listen to it on bad speakers anyway. In my case I listened to it on a Sennheiser HD 280 my favorite studio headphones. Had the Sony one's but they didn't give me a neutral sound. It's always nice to pickup something from a video. And I picked up a couple or so here. Thank you.

how do you do your whitebalancing...do you use a 50% grey card, use a setting in the camera or just AWB? in this video your key light on the right side of your face is way to bright and you are burnt out there and you don't have great fill light. I would also use a big hair light as you move around so much it isn't staying on your hair and it's casting hot spots when you do. Also a "hairlight" helps put deffinition on the hair separating it from the background, unlike a window which is a background light in it'self.

CynthsColorfulWorld the canon G7x as well as G7x Mark II are a bit cheaper without compromising quality. They're also point and shoot camera's making it easy for new channels to be a little more versatile. A Sony mark 3 or 4 are pretty cheap on the market as well with the same features.

Awesome video! I have a relatively new channel for about two months now and have the audio absolutely nailed! I am legally blind so I know or presume I was going to need some help with lighting. Very valuable information I can't wait to go see if I can afford this stuff! LOL I have many years and radio broadcasting on voiceover work so my audio is kind of high-end. Or use a four track Alisa's mixing board which is connected to my computer using USB connection. The audio go through a Sampson module that offers gate and compression among other things. I use an old dynamic Sampson Q8 microphone. So far my video I am just using the camera on my iMac desktop or when I am away from the studio are use my iPad air too. I don't like the audio so much when I am remote. We use iMovie to edit everything. I may just start using the iPad for B roll only that might be the wisest thing to do. Very excited about the lighting info thank you!

First, I love your Vids. Keep i up. Just a simple tip on Window lighting. A north facing window provides the softest most pleasant lighting. You can also use some cardboard with Aluminum foil wrapped on it to bounce light back at the subject to open up shadows.

such a great video dude! i like to use reflectors at times to bounce light and soften light. reflectors allow you to keep you lighting setup permanent but also creates the illusion of moving light around without actually moving it.

Why would you throw in the T5i and T6i in comparison to the 70D? Isn't the 70D's dual piksel much better?

We need a video on audio for people doing vlogs. Try to stage it as what to do for a beginner, then intermediate, then advanced. Start with on-camera audio. Demo the built-in microphone, then a wired lav mic to show budget or starting out options. Then switch to a shotgun mic. Now repeat all 3 audio demos but use a small $99 digital audio recorder like the Zoom or Tascam. Please emphasize that viewers will forgive lower resolution audio, but they really learn with the audio and bad audio will drive viewers away.

Thank you very much for this video! I’m an amateur musician just preparing to record my first couple of videos. I’ve just starting to assemble a studio in my home. I think I have audio covered but the lighting is something I hadn’t put a lot of thought into and want to explore a bit more. I’d also like to look into a different camera a some point but am currently shooting with a GoPro Hero 4. I’m sure I’ll be revisiting this video often. Thank You, I’ll be uploading my first few videos soon!

I like your set up. Lighting has always been the biggest challenge. The light panels plus the ring light seems to be a pretty straight forward solution for KZbin Videos. Now to make a space to utilize them properly. I find natural light to be the best light but the downside is when it's a cloudy day. There's a constant shift that will vary from moment to moment. How do you compensate for that given the back window on your set/home is giving off natural light?
