Some people are missing the point. The assertion isnt that becoming successful makes people immoral, or that moral people can't become successful, it's that behaving immorally is often rewarded with success, so that the proportion of successful people that are immoral is higher than the proportion of immoral people in the general population, and the higher up the ladder of success you go, the higher that proportion gets, because immoral people lie, cheat, steal etc which gives them an edge. This is nothing new. People have pointed out that the number of CEOs that can be clinically diagnosed as psychopaths is significantly higher than the proportion of psychopaths in general society. If you want to learn more about this, I recommend "The Psychopath Test" by Ron Johnson. Really funny and inciteful book.
@allyli1718Ай бұрын
I also think becoming more successful gives you more responsibility and therefore a higher likelihood of committing immoral acts. For Instance, your dad hiring your useless cousin at his hardware store? Not a big deal. A CEO doing the same with his gigantic company? Nepotism hire. Both of these are nepotism hires, but one of them will negatively affect thousands of other workers if the useless cousin is allowed to bumble his way through his job, while the other only really affects your dad and local customer experience.

(Supposing no god exists to enact divine justice upon us mortals) amorality, by definition, will always be more advantageous than morality. This is because even if most of the time, acting morally makes sense (as it makes people like and respect you), in the few instances when it would be more advantegous to choose the evil option, amoral people can take the advantage, while moral people will sacrifice their own benefit for doing what's right.

@@Precipiceofwind But individually it's usually how people climb high
@yoavjacoby8246Ай бұрын
@@Precipiceofwind Indeed, this is a sort of prisoner's dilemma, only with a group rather than just two players. Each individual will sometimes be benefited from an immoral action, but the society will suffer for it. But then, sometimes societies (in times of war, usually) need to commit immoral actions in order to thrive. This is all not to say that we should not be moral individuals, only that we shouldn't expect to benefit from it.
@morgant.dulaman8733Ай бұрын
I wonder if part of the problem is we currently live in a civilization where it seems like there's no consequence for one's actions. For instance, despite something I said on my own post, I know it's unlikely a lot of these celebrity criminals will see meaningful punishment for what they've done. Heck, even if Diddy goes to jail, it will likely be the Goodfellas version. Similarly, while I won't treat Machiavelli's word as gospel (despite being a cynic in many respects myself), I have to appreciate that he formed it amidst the turbulence and shifting fortunes of Rennaissance Italy, where deadly politics between and within city states was a daily fact of life. Finally, I would note a book from the Bible. While I do believe in God and the Lord specifically, I believe the book of Habakkuk makes a point most can agree with: if you look at how humans function, all great empires eventually become corrupt, arrogant, and tyrannical in nature. This often manifests at the domestic level in the types of things beings discussed in the video, as well as hostility and exploitative and abusive relationships with their neighbors. Eventually, weakened from within and having made enough enemies, every empire gets destroyed and its people scattered or subjugated. Put another way, once individual amorality stops being punished, a society begins preparing itself to be punished en masse.

Not only because of guilt but maybe fear and constant need of control to keep the demons hidden. Beyond this and this my personal take this kind of stability and health will allow to become greater and maybe more powerful in the long run because materialistic things are only part of bigger equation

Btw Machiavelli didn’t actually agree with what we call Machiavellian governments. He got kicked out of his home city state by oligarchs, despite being a really good leader in the republic, and was like, well if you aren’t gonna run a real republic, I’m at least gonna tell you how to be the best dictator possible. It was his way of poking fun at his enemies while still laying a blueprint for proper tyrannical rule of his city state.

You should see what a couple of streamers sold us in Italy. Between all the children crap and mother stuff there are incredible valuable trading cards meant to celebrate the community of those creators. Basically criptozoo, without cripto, with real cards made by 10 different artists all about KZbin and twitch community. Truly a bliss.

Why is “lowering taxes” a suggestion for making the country better lol? The actual solution is to eradicate taxes for the average person (other than on harmful substances like tobacco, vapes and alcohol, which should be taxed to the point of unaffordability, with the tax money going into awareness campaigns and government subsidised quit plans) and implement a steep wealth tax where the average person, up until the middle class experiences little to no taxation, while once you make say, 50k a year the tax rate rapidly rises until someone like apple legally has to pay 50-60% of their income in the country to the government, which by constitution has to be invested in public services like healthcare, transport and education

I would make a constitutional amendment that no one would be able to own more than 2 houses under their name and banned overseas ownership unless they are a citizen of the country
